Waterspout in Murrells Inlet
Storms on Thursday across the Grand Strand brought heavy rain, frequent lightning, and rotation.

Thankfully, none of these rotating storms produced a tornado over land in Horry County, but offshore, they did.

There were multiple sightings along the Grand Strand of waterspouts. Sightings were from viewers in Murrells Inlet, Garden City, and Myrtle Beach.

It is unclear if these sightings are of the same waterspout, or different ones.

One storm in particular was persistent with its rotation, producing a waterspout that was seen from Myrtle Beach.

A storm report of a waterspout sighting 6 miles away from Atlantic Beach confirms that the storm highlighted below was the culprit.

This storm kept rotating as it moved northeast, staying offshore of Horry County.

The velocity radar image below shows the confirmed rotation. Greens are measured winds moving toward the radar site (Wilmington, NC) while reds show winds moving away from the site. The area of red hugging green shows a region of rotation, called a couplet, on radar.
