A fireball has been spotted in the sky over Victoria before a meteor slammed into the state's north-west.

CCTV cameras and dashcams from Bendigo to Ballarat and north-western Melbourne captured the moment, as many residents sent reports of an explosion as the meteor approached the earth's surface.
