Heavy rain leads to emergency operations as Portoferraio faces significant damage and danger.

Severe flash floods have wreaked havoc on Elba Island, particularly affecting the main town of Portoferraio, where over 65 millimeters of rain fell within just one hour. This deluge has led to extensive flooding, with city officials and emergency services scrambling to respond to the crisis.

The local mayor took to social media to warn citizens of the dire situation, stating, "Emergency flood situation. The situation is extremely serious in Portoferraio. Do not use cars, do not come toward Portoferraio, and do not try to leave; access routes are blocked." This urgent message highlights the serious risks posed to residents caught off guard by the sudden and intense storm.

According to reports, firefighters have worked tirelessly to rescue at least 28 individuals trapped in vehicles stuck amid the mud and water. The swift rise of floodwaters has also led to additional emergency interventions within homes, as residents found themselves cut off and at risk of rising water levels encroaching upon their safety.

President Eugenio Giani echoed the mayor's calls for caution, emphasizing, "The Tuscan civil protection system and firefighters are working to assist the population affected by the downpour. 65 mm of rain have been recorded falling within just over one hour." His appeal for safety was matched with promises of support from emergency teams deployed to the most affected areas.

Additional reports emerged, detailing the impact across not only Portoferraio but also neighboring areas, including Giglio where homes faced similar threats from falling debris and rising waters. The storms prompted rapid evacuations of vulnerable facilities, including dance schools and other public spaces, to protect minors and residents alike.

By the time the rains tapered off, the aftermath revealed immense challenges for local authorities. Significant portions of major roads became impassable due to submerged vehicles and debris, crippling emergency services' efforts to reach those still stranded.

The flooding has also led to reports of chronic disruptions, with ambulances hindered from reaching hospitals due to road blockages. Amidst rising frustrations, the local governments continued to call on residents to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. "The situation is tense; stay sheltered and safe," reiterated the city's communications.
