Severe storms wreaked havoc across multiple regions of Greece, causing widespread flooding and fires as lightning struck during the torrential downpours.

Areas such as Kilkis, Veria, and Ioannina were particularly hard-hit, with heavy rainfall transforming streets into rivers and creating dangerous conditions for residents.

In several parts of the country, including Pella, Giannina, Thessaloniki, Kozani, and Korinthia, summer weather was abruptly interrupted by severe thunderstorms.

Veria faced extreme difficulty as heavy rain combined with lightning strikes, making roads nearly impassable. Emergency crews worked quickly to remove water from inundated areas.

Adding to the chaos, lightning ignited at least 10 fires, according to Greece's Minister of Civil Protection and Climate Change, Vassilis Kikilias. A total of 44 new fires were reported on August 18 alone. Kikilias issued a public warning via X (formerly Twitter), urging citizens to remain vigilant as more severe weather is expected in the coming days.
