What we have is basically identical in practice to pure slavery, with the plantation house replaced by the palace, and the slave quarters replaced by urban and suburban housing. The new slavery makes the slaves feed and clothe themselves - with goods from the company store. Done because it's cheaper and takes less work than the pure form. Most of the people in the palaces don't know they're slaves, too.
