"We have about 50% of the world's wealth but only 6.3% of its population. This disparity is particularly great as between ourselves and the peoples of Asia. In this situation, we cannot fail to be the object of envy and resentment. Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of disparity without positive detriment to our national security. To do so, we will have to dispense with all sentimentality and day-dreaming; and our attention will have to be concentrated everywhere on our immediate national objectives. We need not deceive ourselves that we can afford today the luxury of altruism and world-benefaction."

Yesterday, archeologists were astonished to find a plush representation of a bear alongside the remains of a mid-20th century child entombed in a sarcophagus near Lebanon, Kansas. The object - measuring roughly 30.5 cm in length, 12.5 cm in width at is abdomen and having an arm and leg span of 20.8 cm and 22 cm, respectively - appears to be a 3-dimensional caricature of an American Brown Bear (Ursus arctos) or that of a related subspecies, the American Grizzly (Ursus arctos horribilis). Dr. F.L. Offet, site director and principle investigator said, "The object may have been intentionally shaped to highlight or exhibit human qualities; for example, it very clearly exhibits an apparent bipedal morphology and its facial structure is shaped to appear human while still resembling that of a bear... shortened snout, 'friendly' up-turned corners of its mouth, etc."
The find has produced a tremendous amount of speculation as to the significance of the object for the child with whom it was found and the larger community to which the child belonged. A range of hypotheses relating to known funerary rights of the time are being considered as archeologists attempt a description and explanation of the object's place and role within period burials, broadly, and the uncovered tomb, specifically. Alternatively, the object may have played a role in religious practice, as the bear bears a resemblance to known religious iconography belonging to a cult who clearly worshiped a deity known as Smokey-The-Bear. Offet stated, "Currently we are working to understand the object in situ, as we are examining it in it place and in the context of the entirety of the site. It appears the bear was placed adjacent the heart of the human remains, leading us to believe - based upon the shared iconography of this and other sites - that this bear and it's placement within the burial may represent a sort of "heart magic" for deceased members of the related Bear Cult. If so, then this is a novel find capable of widening and advancing our understanding of an otherwise narrow breadth of description relating to the totem-ism of the Smokey The Bear Cult."
A complete description of the dig leading to the discovery of the tentatively labelled "Smokey Tote" and other research findings will be published in next months edition of "The Journal of Almost Modern Archeology."
