Hmmmm... I may be wrong, but is this not just another case of ‘bad astronomy’?
First of all, the direction of the light source (the sun) is surely suggesting that what is described as a 'big, shallow crater' is more like a vast raised escarpment.
Secondly the kind of features shown bear no resemblance to any form of impacting I have seen. What they do look like is the kind of features now regularly recognised by those who understand the results of extreme electrical or plasma discharging between planets – cosmic lightening scars in other words.
Anyone else got a view here?
