I believe the object is most likely Venus, and have included a hyperlink below to a star map for coord. 10N/84W (appprox. Costa Rica) on Jan 3 2009 00:00 UTC (18:00 + 6). Venus can be seen below the visible portion of the moon, situated as the video demonstrates (Venus is the symbol also used to denote the female sex).
The gentleman makes a reference to the North and South, however this seems inconsistant to the direction and degree of pan as he spots the Moon relative to the object. The Moon should also have been seen in the approx. West at that location and hour.
I am no authority on optics, but the "two plates" or triangle forms seen when the camera is at high zoom levels appear distorted and could possibly be wave interference as the light passes through the aperture or something similar.
