The city of Coos Bay is investigating foam contamination that workers noticed in the wastewater system Friday.

The foam entered treatment plant No. 1 at 680 Ivy Ave., a press release said. The foam worked its way into the treatment facility's aeration basin. Because of the aerated mixing of this step in the treatment process, the foaming increased significantly.

"CH2M HILL OMI staff used water spray to suppress and contain the foam, but afternoon winds caused some of the foam to blow offsite," a press release said.

The city notified the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality.

The source of the foam is unknown, except that it came from the sanitary sewer system that comes from the waterfront and downtown area. The foam is light in color and should be free of notable particulates. However, due to potential health concerns the city asks people avoid touching it.

Anyone who has information that may assist in identifying the source of this foam, is asked to call Coos Bay City Hall at 269-8912.
