Charleston, West Virginia - People in parts of Kanawha County are reporting a haze and an odor, Metro 911 officials said.

An unidentified smell and haze was apparent in parts of St. Albans, Nitro and Institute, dispatchers said.

Metro 911 began receiving calls from the public a little after 1:15 p.m.

Emergency service officials say they have not been notified of any hazardous material spills or leaks.

Dispatchers already have contacted the state Office of Emergency Services and the Department of Environmental Protection, along with local chemical plants, fire departments and surrounding counties' emergency crews.

Officials are not recommending the public take any special precautions at this time, dispatchers said.

This is at least the third time this year residents have reported an unidentified blue haze in the Kanawha Valley.

The most recent incident occurred June 26, when Metro 911 received multiple calls. Officials never pinpointed a cause.

In January, dozens of people called to report a strong smell and a blue haze. Environmental investigators blamed the problem on a weather system trapping chemical emissions over the area.
