National Weather Service reported a temperature of 82.9 degrees at 2 p.m. Tuesday, breaking the record high temperature for the date of 81 degrees set in 1970.

The new record temperature for the date could soar close to the 90s. NWS forecasters at Greater Binghamton Airport expect a high today of 89 degrees.

The all-time high for any date in September is 96 degrees set on Sept. 2 and 3 in 1953.

The mini-heat wave will continue Wednesday, with a forecasted high of 81 degrees -- one degree shy of the record for Sept. 26 set in 1986.
