U.P. city working on 18 feet of snow so far, see snow totals around Michigan

Here's a look at how much snow various parts of Michigan have had already this winter.

The general theme of the snowfall this winter is amounts vary greatly compared to normal amounts of snow. Much of southeast Lower Michigan has near normal snowfall so far. Southwest Lower is significantly below normal in the snow department. Northern Lower Michigan has a mixed snow tally now, and the western U.P. has snow really piling up.

The Keweenaw Road Commission reports 215 inches of snow so far this winter. The normal amount to this date at Houghton in the Keweenaw Peninsula is 184 inches.

Some ski areas in the Alps have reported more than a metre of snowfall in the past 72 hours.

The Swiss Valais canton has seen the biggest snowfalls reported, with Lotschental ski area posting the most in the past 72 hours - 107cm or 43 inches.

But many ski resorts have reported 30-60cm (1-2 feet) or more in snowfall since Tuesday. A complete transformation after the largely dry and sunny January conditions mot have enjoyed.

Snow hampered traffic with 300 roads, including three national highways, closed after snowfall across the state

A fresh spell of snow in Himachal Pradesh threw life out of gear on Wednesday with 300 roads, including three national highways, closed for traffic due to slippery roads.

Shimla got 10.2cm of snowfall and recorded a low of minus 1 degree Celsius, while the nearby tourist town of Kufri got 45cm of snowfall and shivered at minus 4.4 degrees. The snow hampered traffic on the main Circular Road in Shimla, delaying the supply of daily essentials. The stretch connecting Victory Tunnel to Sanjauli was closed after snowfall overnight.

The strategic Hindustan-Tibet road that connects the forward areas along the China border in Kinnaur district and the apple belt of Shimla district also remained closed for the second day due to heavy snowfall at Kufri and Narkanda. "No vehicle is being allowed beyond Dhalli. Machines are working to clear the stretch of snow," said Shimla superintendent of police Omapati Jamwal.

Bitterly cold wave sweeps over Saudi Arabia's north

Saudi Arabia is experiencing bitterly cold wave, accompanied by active and sometimes strong winds, mainly in the northern regions. Renowned weather expert Muad Al-Ahmadi called the cold spell as "Muqarqaa Al-Baiban."

Speaking to Al Arabiya.net, he said that the cold wave that started a few days ago will continue for about two weeks more. He urged people to take utmost vigil, precaution and safety measures during this period.

"The first wave started last Tuesday, and its climax was on Wednesday and Thursday, and that ended on Friday, while the second wave, which is the strongest and hardest, began Saturday, and would continue till midweek," he said adding that this will be the strongest ever cold snap than the past waves.

Strong winds and a double-digit dumping of snow made for precarious driving conditions along Turnagain Arm on Monday morning and through the early afternoon.

The storm subsided, but another is expected to hit mid-week.

Snow started falling late Sunday, said National Weather Service meteorologist Michael Kutz. About 15 inches of snow accumulated near Portage by Monday afternoon, he said.

Alaska Department of Transportation spokeswoman Shannon McCarthy said 18 inches of new snow was recorded in Girdwood on Monday.


Accumulation along Turnagain Pass was recorded at 10 inches or more by Monday afternoon.

Capital Nur-Sultan under state of emergency as powerful winter storm hits Kazakhstan

Authorities in the Kazakh capital have declared a state of emergency after a winter storm pummeled the city with strong winds and heavy snowfall.

Transportation links to and from Nur-Sultan were cut on January 27, while all schools in the capital remained closed.

The spokesman for Nur-Sultan International Airport, Zhenis Akhmetzhanov, told reporters that all flights were postponed for an unknown period of time for safety reasons.

Nur-Sultan's emergencies department called on residents not to leave the capital before the state of emergency is lifted.

Dozens of highways across the Central Asian country have been closed due to winter storms.

A cold snap has flooded a turtle rehab center with more animals in need than ever before.

Volunteers at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center said they are treating more than 100 turtles. Forty-seven sea turtles were admitted Friday alone.

The turtles are cold-stunned. They are reptiles, which are cold-blooded. Cold-blooded animals cannot regulate their body temperature. So often when temperatures drop quickly, the animals seize up.

Nearly a foot of snow could fall in some areas while other locations will see widespread, icy conditions following rain.

Although it's January, you wouldn't be able to tell by looking at a thermometer. Many areas across the eastern U.S. have been experiencing temperatures typically seen during March and April.

Temperatures are typically at their lowest during this time of year in the United States when the days are at their shortest; however, the region has seen an increase in temperatures of 30 to 35 degrees above average.

Comment: Early budding can be devastating to crops because the buds and the resulting produce is ruined by the returning cold.

Every day of the past week in the Magadan region the frosts grew stronger, and over the past day the air temperature dropped below the norm by 8.5 degrees.

But in continental areas, temperature set new records. In the village of Talon, on January 24, the temperature dropped to -46.2C (-51.1 F), which is 0.2 degrees below the previous record set in 1978.
