AN earthquake with the magnitude of 5.8 jolted Tonga early this morning.

The US Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center USGS reported that the earthquake occurred at 7:12:35am, 6.8 km below sea level.

The exact location of the earthquake was at 20.047 degree South and 174.533 degree West, which was 140km to the NNE of Nuku'alofa, Tongatapu, and 165km to the SSW of Neiafu, Vava'u.

The quake occurred deep below sea level and so far out to sea, that no one has been reported in the capital, Nuku'alofa to have felt the quake.

The Tonga Geological Center this afternoon confirmed that no damages have been recorded and no Tsunami alert has been issued.
