A full-on winter storm hit New Zealand yesterday with freezing levels down to 600 metres in the far south and 1000 metres over the central North Island.

"The bulk of the storm passed over the South Island yesterday and it worked its way across the North Island overnight," said the Grasshopper, Mountainwatch's snow forecaster. "The forecast was for 40-50cm in the Canterbury ski fields with about 15 cm on the Southern Lakes ski fields. Looking at webcams and observations, this looks to be the case."

'Very unusual': April snowfall surprises South Island, New Zealand

It appears winter has come early, with snow, rain and strong winds hitting much of the island, South Island locals say.

Snow blanketed the South Island's high country and alpine passes as a low swept across the country today. Much of the South Island's high country and alpine passes saw snow overnight, including Lewis Pass, and Porters Pass.

MetService said there could be more to come, with the Kaikōura Ranges and high country in Canterbury and Otago facing more snow down to 500m later today.

Yosemite National Park reopened Sunday after flooding that washed out roads during a strong Pacific storm, park officials said.

Forecasters said up to 6 inches (15 centimeters) of rain fell over two days as rivers swelled in Northern California.

Roads within Yosemite Valley were swamped by up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) of water that affected electrical and water systems. Most facilities reopened at midday, but officials warned that traffic could be slow as cleanup work continues.

The area was closed Friday as a powerful "Pineapple Express" storm moved through. The heaviest rain was in the northern Sierra and in coastal counties from San Francisco north to Mendocino during a 48-hour period ending Saturday afternoon.

A severe storm in Texas dropped tennis ball-sized hail in the Dallas Forth Worth area.

The massive storm saw thunder, heavy rain, and hail fall from the sky Friday night.

The deluge released a heavy downpour of hail around 7pm Friday for about 10 minutes, sending the balls of ice flying through the air, destroying windows and cars.

Locals shared the astonishing images of the hail on social media, where the balls of ranged from the size of a pea to a tennis ball, according to NBC.

Several people shared video footage of the torrential storm that covered front lawns in white as millions of pieces of hail fell to the ground.

In some footage viewers can hear the thuds and taps of the heavy ice balls hitting the earth.

Dozens of geese plummeted from the sky during a severe hail and thunderstorm Saturday evening.

Witnesses tell EastIdahoNews.com the birds suddenly fell into a parking lot near Yellowstone Highway and Lincoln Road in Idaho Falls around 7 p.m. It's likely they were struck by lightning.

Workers with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game arrived with a truck and picked up the geese, according to witnesses.

Lightning bolt kills woman, injures 4 others in White Springs, Florida

Five people were struck by lightning in White Springs, Florida on Saturday as storms moved through the northeast part of the state.

A woman died and four people were injured, according to a local storm report by the National Weather Service.

A source tells us the woman is Kourtney Lambert.

The people were struck at Woodpecker Mud Bog, officials say.

A source tells Action News Jax the strikes happened at about 2:50 p.m. near a camper where people were seeking shelter under the camper's gooseneck.

The source says a 23-year-old woman was struck and killed instantly.


Comment: In Asia fatalities caused by lightning strikes during the past week across India include a woman killed in Bengaluru, 3 struck in separate incidents in Jaipur and 2 hit by bolts in Odisha while in Jamalpur, Bangladesh a teenage boy succumbed.

Eight tornadoes hit the Heartland on Tuesday, April 3, according to the National Weather Service. The latest report was a twister in New Madrid County, Missouri.

There were two tornadoes reported in Hickman County, Ky., one in Massac County, Ill., one in Williamson County, Ill., one in Livingston County, Ky, in Saline County, IL, one in Dunklin County, Mo and one in New Madrid County, Mo.

The death toll on Scottish sheep farms has seen a sharp increase following spells of heavy snow this winter, according to official figures.

Farming leaders said sheep farmers were facing a "war of attrition" from the weather after a severe winter followed a wet summer and autumn.

And they warned that it could affect productivity for the rest of the year.

Gary Mitchell, vice-president of NFU Scotland, said spring lambs were having a "really tough time".

Heavy rain and hailstorm has destroyed fruit orchards and vegetable fields in most of the areas of Kurram Agency the other day.

According to Peshawar correspondent , the Kurram Agency areas of Zeran, Malana, Karman Boghki and Para Chamkani were hit by heavy rain and hailstorm where scores of fruit orchards and fields of vegetables were destroyed.

In Zeran Brabata area, the roof of the house of a poor man, Ilayas caved in causing him losses of thousands of rupees besides death to his two cattle. On other side thousands of acres of land along side Kurram River was in danger of being washed away due to lack of protected embankments.
