Floods in India's Assam force a million from their homes

FLOODS
Heavy flooding triggered by monsoon rains has forced more than a million people to flee their homes in the northeast Indian state of Assam, authorities said on Monday, warning that the crisis was becoming more critical by the hour.

The Brahmaputra River, one of the largest rivers in the world which flows from Tibet into India and then into Bangladesh, burst its banks in Assam over the weekend, inundating more than 2,000 villages, and it was still raining on Monday.

"Two people have died in separate incidents of drowning in the past 24 hours and more than one million people have been affected, with the flood situation turning critical by the hour," a state government flood bulletin said.

A severe storm ripped through southwestern Manitoba Sunday evening, causing flooding and damage in and around the Brandon area.

Around 4 p.m. a tornado warning was issued in the Minnedosa area, however the warning ended shortly after.

Environment and Climate Change Canada said it's too early to say whether a tornado touched down in the area. Meteorologist Sara Hoffman told CTV News Environment Canada received reports of damage near Rapid City.

Hoffman said conditions were favourable for producing a tornado, but couldn't say yet whether one had occurred. She said Environment Canada will have to comb through data and damage in order to make that determination.

Three Gorges Dam

With the heaviest floods in 70+ years covering China under unprecedented amounts of flood water, recent talk of the Three Gorges Dam over-topping or collapsing is making the rounds. This is my best guess what will happen as the reservoir fills and flood gates are opened to full volume with down river flooding that will severely reduce crop yields moving into 2020 harvest season.
