More than 500 incoming and outgoing flights at Denver International Airport have been delayed or canceled Monday as the first major snowstorm of 2020 moves through Colorado.

RTD bus and light rail service delays could be up to 20 minutes Monday because of the winter storm, according to an RTD tweet.

Eight airlines canceled 144 flights in and out of DIA on Monday, according to the website FlightAware. SkyWest canceled the most flights, a total of 61 by noon Monday, FlightAware said.

"There are delays due to weather," said Alex Renteria, DIA spokeswoman. "Keep an eye on the weather."

The sound of snow blowers filled the air in Sydney on Sunday morning as Cape Bretoners awoke to more snow and lots of it. According to Environment Canada, over 30 cm of snow descended upon on the island overnight.

"This is our first winter back on the East Coast, so I'm kind of wishing we were back in Vancouver right now," said one returning resident.

Mixed in with rain and freezing rain, the snow was not easy to move or shovel.

"I do four driveways here," says resident, Bill Lloy, who was snow blowing driveways in his neighbourhood. "It blows the snow quite well. It has two belts in it, lots of power - it's great."

With the continued weakening of solar activity the intensity of global weather extremes is also following lock step. These are a handful of examples from the beginning of 2020 including a severe cool down and rare snowfall across the Middle east as Saudi Arabia set to break all time cold records, snows in Egypt, UAE and Egypt. Locust swarms seen from five miles darkening skies in East Africa, tremendous snows in Taiwan, 1200 emergency calls for help during one hail storm in Australia. Crop losses and spring planting to be effected in 2020.

Adrian Van Beek and his family decided to escape the hot Brisbane summer and take a holiday in Hobart but when they arrived, they were hit by opposite extremes.

Hobart's temperatures spiked at 40C last Friday, making it the hottest day since 1899.

"On the first day, we'd planned to go up the mountain, but it was so hot that we couldn't," Mr Van Beek told Nine.com.

The next day, Mr Van Beek and family set off to enjoy a cooler day only to get caught in major snow fall and temperatures of -1C on Mount Wellington overlooking Hobart.

Rare snow devil filmed in mountains of Troms, Norway

rare snow devil
Rare snow devil
A rare snow devil was spotted swirling in the mountains of Troms, Norway, on January 28.

Evald Andersen captured footage of the event from his balcony.

According to the World Meteorological Organization, this phenomenon occurs when "surface wind shear acts to generate a vortex over snow cover, resulting in a whirling column of snow particles being raised from the ground."

The spinning columns tend to appear for brief moments and are therefore quite elusive and difficult to capture on camera.

"There was strong wind from the south/southwest being pushed over and down the mountain, creating this snow devil," said Magnus Andersen, Evald's son.
