Dozens dead in new Mediterranean migrant tragedy

About 200 shocked survivors were plucked from the sea on Saturday after their overloaded boat sank, claiming more than 30 lives in the latest deadly migrant tragedy to hit the Mediterranean.

Their boat went down off Malta on Friday near the Italian island of Lampedusa, packed with 230 to 250 men, women and children, the Maltese navy said.

As the toll rose in the latest refugee disaster, Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat warned that the Mediterranean was in danger of becoming a "cemetery" for migrants desperate to reach European shores.

"The latest figure we have is 31" dead, a Maltese government spokesman told AFP on Saturday. The Italian navy earlier gave the figure of 34 dead.

Exhausted after a 10-hour journey from the wreck site, about 143 survivors arrived in Valetta on Saturday morning aboard a Maltese naval vessel. They were helped onto buses to be driven to shelters.

Pakistani student activist Malala Yousafzai to Obama: Drones are fueling terrorism

© PETE SOUZA โ€” Official White House photoPresident Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, and their daughter Malia meet with Malala Yousafzai, the young Pakistani schoolgirl who was shot in the head by the Taliban a year ago, in the Oval Office, Oct. 11, 2013.
President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama met in the Oval Office Friday with Malala Yousafzai, the Pakastani girl who was shot in the head on her school bus by Taliban gunmen for criticizing their rule, including banning education for girls.

The White House says the first couple invited Malala -- the youngest ever nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize -- to the White House "to thank her for her inspiring and passionate work on behalf of girls education in Pakistan."

In a statement, the White House says the United States "joins with the Pakistani people and so many around the world to celebrate Malala's courage and her determination to promote the right of all girls to attend school and realize their dreams."

In a statement released after the meeting, Malala said she was honored to meet with Obama, but that she told him she's worried about the effect of U.S. drone strikes. (The White House statement didn't mention that part.)

"I thanked President Obama for the United States' work in supporting education in Pakistan and Afghanistan and for Syrian refugees," she said in the statement. "I also expressed my concerns that drone attacks are fueling terrorism. Innocent victims are killed in these acts, and they lead to resentment among the Pakistani people. If we refocus efforts on education it will make a big impact."

Malala was in Washington to address the World Bank.

Driver survives two trains crashing into car in Utah - video

Police dashboard camera footage has captured the moment that two trains crashed into a car that officers were pursuing. Miraculously, the driver survived the crashes.

Police in Utah were pursuing a car when the driver drove onto rail tracks and was hit by an oncoming train.

Officers can be seen going up to the car to check on the driver after the collision, before another train's horn can be heard blaring in the distance.

The policemen quickly move away from the tracks as another train collides with the car, pushing it down the railroad.

Quite miraculously, the driver of the Mercedes car only suffered a broken arm in the collisions.

"There was already a southbound train going across 2600 south, and she hit that train while it was crossing. While officers were trying to get her out of her car, a second southbound train hit her vehicle," Detective Adam Osoro of the Woods Cross Police Department said.

"The vehicle sustained heavy damage, so in this case she's very lucky to still be with us," Detective Osoro said.

"At that point, I had no idea how powerful this project could be," she said.

Food prices jumped 6 percent in Arizona since last quarter

Image
Arizona retail food prices at the supermarket are up in the third quarter of 2013, according to the latest Arizona Farm Bureau Federation Marketbasket Survey. The informal survey shows the total cost of 16 basic grocery items was $50.87, up $2.90 or about 6% more than the second quarter of 2013. Comparatively, the American Farm Bureau Federation's national survey was $53.20, up $1.66 or about 3% higher than their March semi-annual survey.

Compared to this time last year, the 2013 third quarter Marketbasket survey shows that Arizona's food prices have increased about 3.5 percent.

"Everyone is looking to save money." says Julie Murphree, Communications Director for the Arizona Farm Bureau. "I'd encourage Arizona families to keep hunting for those bargains in our basics like your meats, fruits, vegetables, diary and eggs to stretch your food dollars."

Of the 16 items surveyed in Arizona, seven decreased and eight increased compared to the 2013 second quarter survey.

"Stronger demand on the consumer side helped push retail prices higher for some items such as chicken breasts, bacon and shredded cheese," said John Anderson, American Farm Bureau's deputy chief economist. "Meat and dairy items will likely be the main driving force behind expected retail food price increase in the coming year."
