A mutant newborn calf with two heads, six legs and two tails has been born in Turkey.

The strange creature was stillborn in the rural neighbourhood of Bahcearasi in the district of Cine, during the early hours of November, 7.

Erdem Celik, 38, discovered the calf when he noticed that one of his cows was having difficulty giving birth.

The farmer called veterinarian Huseyin Aynur, who came to assist technician Selim Gokcen with the delivery.

Initially, it was thought that the cow was pregnant with twins and that a normal birth would not be possible.

They decided to perform a caesarian section, which took around two hours.

But all three men were left shocked when the mutant creature came out stillborn.

The calf was born with two heads, four front legs and two back legs, two tails, and a double spine.

Though Erdem Celik thought at least one of the conjoined animals was alive at the beginning of the procedure - both had died by the time it was over.

The corpse was taken to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Adnan Menderes University in the district of Efeler in the same province for a necropsy.

Experts believe the calves were stillborn conjoined as the result of a rare genetic abnormality.

They hope their research will allow them to inform the cows' owner of any issues with his herd that he may need to pay attention to.

Last year, an Indian farmer got the shock of his life when one of his cows gave birth to a two-headed calf.

It had two conjoined heads with four eyes and two mouths but only one pair of ears.

The week-old calf's two tongues leave him unable to suckle from his mother but he's survived thanks to kind-hearted farmer Bhaskar, who has been feeding him milk from a bottle every day.
