A two-headed calf with a pig's body was born in Khakassia, Russia
A mutant calf with two heads and a pig-like body has baffled a farmer in Russia.

The freakish animal, which resembled two pigs more than a newborn cow, did not survive its birth which sadly also killed the mother.

Vets studied the calf in the village of Matkechik, Khakassia earlier this month after a farmer reported the bizarre abnormality.

A photo taken of the lifeless beast shows its hairless pink body laid on the ground with its hind legs splayed.

Looking at the two heads, both eyes appear sewn shut and not one but two tongues are pictured dangling on either side of its front hooves.

Local residents said on social media that the mutant calf did not survive the birth and the mother died just a few days later.

The Department of Veterinary Medicine of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food of the Republic of Khakassia said in a statement on 25th October: "Such a case did indeed take place in the village of Matkechik, Beysky District, at one of the private farmsteads.

"According to the owner, the calf was stillborn and was the cow's first offspring.

"The main reason for animals being born with genetic abnormalities (mutations) is a change in the genome. The reasons for mutations in animals are caused by their external and internal environment.

"Mutations are inherited changes in the genome, arising as a result of certain mutagenic influences, as well as in artificial (experimental) conditions. Also, mutations can occur during crossbreeding."

The Department of Veterinary Medicine added that measures are being introduced to make sure officials carry out artificial insemination practices at private farms instead of allowing the farm owners to do it.

Last year in China, a double-headed calf was able to drink with both mouths from its mum's udder.

Auntie Zhang from Dejiang County, Guizhou Province said that after a difficult seven-hour labour she was stunned to see the mutant animal.
