Hundreds of activists fight occupation by rebuilding a Palestinian village

activists in Sarura rebuild their village
Hundreds of activists, organized by a coalition of Palestinian, Israeli and International organizations joined the families of Sarura to rebuild their village and create the "Sumud Freedom Camp."

The camp is located in an Israeli military firing zone on land belonging to the Palestinian village of Sarura, where 15 to 20 families were expelled by Israeli forces in the 1990's. According to Adam Greenberg, a participant, the camp is inspired by the Standing Rock protests in the U.S. which is working to prevent the building of an oil pipeline on indigenous land.

The coalition includes Palestinian, Israelis and international organizations: the All That's Left Collective, the Center for Jewish Nonviolence, Combatants for Peace, the Holy Land Trust, local Palestinian committees and Youth Against Settlements.

Ideology Vs. Realism: How Devotion to a 'System' Can Blind Us to What Actually Works

ideologies
In reality, socioeconomic ideologies like socialism, communism, capitalism, agorism, and anarchy are like tools. They are best used under specific circumstances dictated by reality, and just like tools, are best used in combination or sequence toward achieving a certain end.

Healthcare provides a perfect example of this. All can most likely agree that one shouldn't die simply because they cannot afford healthcare. The current state of healthcare - particularly in terms of infrastructure and technology - means that in order to provide healthcare to individuals who cannot afford it "socialist" style policies and charity is required. However, neither is a sustainable or final solution - merely an incremental step toward one.

Free market competition, collaboration, entrepreneurship, and the advance of medical technology makes it cheaper and more accessible for everyone, including those who cannot afford it at current costs. Incrementally, research and development will yield healthcare infrastructure and technology even the poorest can afford without government intervention or charitable organizations.

An Aeromexico passenger jet collided with a utility truck on a taxiway of Los Angeles International Airport shortly after landing on Saturday, injuring eight employees who were aboard the truck, but no one on the plane was hurt, authorities said.

The cause of the mishap, which damaged the right wing of the Boeing 737 and left the large supply truck overturned on its side, remained under investigation, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

Six men and two women aboard the truck were taken to an area hospital for treatment of various unspecified injuries, none of them considered to be life-threatening, Humphreys said.

Airport officials said all eight were listed in stable condition.

'The Conceptual Penis as a Social Construct': Hoax gender studies paper accepted by a peer-reviewed academic journal

Note from the Skeptic editor: Every once in awhile it is necessary and desirable to expose extreme ideologies for what they are by carrying out their arguments and rhetoric to their logical and absurd conclusion, which is why we are proud to publish this expose of a hoaxed article published in a peer-reviewed article today. It's ramifications are unknown but one hopes it will help reign in extremism in this and related areas.

"The conceptual penis as a social construct" is a Sokal-style hoax on gender studies. Follow the authors @peterboghossian and @GodDoesnt.

The Hoax
The androcentric scientific and meta-scientific evidence that the penis is the male reproductive organ is considered overwhelming and largely uncontroversial.
That's how we began. We used this preposterous sentence to open a "paper" consisting of 3,000 words of utter nonsense posing as academic scholarship. Then a peer-reviewed academic journal in the social sciences accepted and published it.

The Syrian war and the Western left's misguided obsession with Empire

Western left and imperialsim

The left has always been small in the U.S., but now much of it cannot be called "left" at all. Jacobin throws its weight behind the jihadists waging holy war in Syria on behalf of US imperialism and its junior partners" - a reflection of "the infantile state of the anti-war left in the US." Imperialism has a twisted, phony left face. "Rather than defend Syria's self-determination, many in the West have bought into the imperialist narrative."

Comment: Jacobin is this website.

The Trump Administration's decision to conduct tomahawk missile strikes on a Syrian Arab Army airfield prompted activists in the US to hit the streets in protest. Protesters marched and spoke out against the airstrikes, which killed over a dozen Syrian soldiers on April 6th. The strikes come amidst intense pressure on the Trump Administration to abandon his campaign promises to ease relations with Russia and end regime change policy in the Middle East. In the days prior to the strike, Trump removed Steve Bannon as a formal leader in the National Security Council. Then, an alleged chemical weapons attack hit Idlib province, prompting President Trump, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley to reverse their position that the future of the Syrian government rested in the hands of the Syrian people. Once again, the anti-war movement was put to the test.

Global Future report: Britain needs 200,000 migrants per year to save itself from Brexit 'catastrophe'

Britain must allow at least 200,000 migrant workers to enter the country if it wants to escape the economic "catastrophe" of Brexit, a new study reveals.

According to the Global Future report, Britain's ageing population, its low productivity and labor shortages in key areas such as the National Health Service (NHS), means the UK must maintain a net inward migration target of 200,000, broadly in line with actual levels since 2000.

The report slammed both the Conservative and Labour parties for failing to be honest with the public about the extent to which the UK needs migrant workers.

The Tories have on Thursday renewed their manifesto pledge to cut net migration to the tens of thousands, something former PM David Cameron had initially committed to back in 2015, but which the government has repeatedly failed to deliver.

However, the report warned that if the government continues to be picky over its labor resources, the country risks a decade of slow growth similar to that experienced by Japan.
