An Islamic school teacher in France has been sentenced to one year in jail for brutally beating his 12-year-old student and for shaving off the boy's "non-Koranic" hair, which was colored blonde.

The teacher, along with three other men, was convicted of kidnapping and violence against a minor by the Pontoise criminal court on Friday, French media report. The shocking incident occurred last April, when the boy showed up at his Arabic class at the Sablon mosque, in the municipality of Sarcelles, north off Paris.

The teacher apparently did not favor the new hairstyle sported by the student, saying his blonde fringe went against "Koranic rules." As a "punishment," he decided to shave off his pupil's tinted hair in the middle of class.

In revenge, the boy later pelted the offender's house with eggs only to run into more trouble. The teacher called the boy's stepfather and got permission to teach him "a good lesson," with the condition that it wouldn't leave marks on his body.

Immigration related crime increases 61% in one German region

A study in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, showed that migrant crime has greatly increased in the region. The number of migrant suspects in the state more than doubled in three years, German newspaper Die Welt reports.

The study of the Niedersachsen Criminal Institute, shows that between 2013 and 2016 the number of migrants suspected of criminal offenses have more than doubled to 30,796.

While almost half of the cases involved immigration related offenses, there is a large increase in other offenses as well. Without these kinds of violations, the increase of migrant suspects is still 61 per cent.

Comment: As the number of migrants increases - and during that time period it has exploded - and as Germany's ability to cope decreases, it seems likely that "immigration related offenses" would increase. And according to one German government survey, crime committed by migrants was more likely to be reported. Surely there has been a rise in crime, but again according to that one report, the crimes were usually committed by migrants either against other migrants or refugees.

While the Media Across the World Look Away, Civilians in Afrin Are Being Slaughtered

Civilians in Afrin

On a green hillside in Afrin in northern Syria, Arab militiamen allied to the Turkish army which invaded this Kurdish enclave seven weeks ago have captured a group of terrified looking Kurdish civilians. The unformed and heavily armed militiamen are shouting "pigs", "pimp" and "PKK - Kurdistan Workers Party - pigs" all the while chanting "Allah Akbar (God Is Great)". The Kurds, their hands raised in the air, are led away by the militiamen and their fate is unknown.

There are many such videos and still photographs from Afrin taken by Kurds and members of the Turkish forces showing the shelling and bombing of houses, the mangled bodies of children killed by the explosions and others of Kurdish civilians being herded away. One horrific selfie taken by a militiamen shows him staring at the camera while over his left shoulder is a burned out civilian car in which sits the corpse of the driver, his white teeth thrown into relief because the rest of his body is burned black.

If any of these images were coming out of Eastern Ghouta, they would be leading every television newscast and dominating the front pages. Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the UN, would be holding up pictures of dead and dying children. But because these events are happening in Afrin and not in Eastern Ghouta, in the same country but 200 miles apart, they are almost entirely ignored by both media and foreign politicians.

Afrin is seeing the beginnings of a tragedy that could be every bit as bad or worse than anything witnessed in Eastern Ghouta today or East Aleppo in 2016. Coming upon pictures of children buried under broken concrete, one has to search for additional information to know if the deaths are of Kurds killed by the Turkish bombardment in northern Syria, or people in Eastern Ghouta slaughtered by the Syrian government at the same time in much the same way. The greatest difference between the two situations is that the atrocities in Damascus are publicised by the media across the world, while in the Kurdish case they are regarded as scarcely worth a mention.

Russian military: First group of militants surrender arms and leave East Ghouta after Russia-brokered talks

The first group of militants have surrendered their arms and left East Ghouta as an increasing number of rebel fighters in Syria seek to disassociate themselves from Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists, the Russian military has announced.

"Certain representatives of illegal armed groups have intensified attempts to get in touch with the Syrian government forces and the Russian Center for Reconciliation with the aim of discussing their separation from the banned terrorist group Jabhat al-Nusra," Major General Yury Yevtushenko, the head of the Reconciliation Center in Syria, said in a statement on Friday.

Efforts to separate the so-called moderate opposition fighters from jihadists continue in the Damascus suburb of Eastern Ghouta. The Syrian government established a humanitarian corridor which remains open to both civilians and militants who are willing to lay down their arms.

The first group of 13 militants used the gateway to leave the rebel-controlled Damascus suburb via Muhayam al-Wafideen corridor overnight. Video of the exodus under government watch shows fighters carrying their belongings and boarding vehicles to head to Idlib. Yevtushenko attributed the militant surrender to the "lengthy talks" held by the reconciliation center's officers and jihadist groups.

Flippy, the burger-flipping robot, suspended after just one day on the job

Human burger-flippers can breathe a momentary sigh of relief: the robot that was put to work over a hot grill in California this week has already been suspended. The bad news? It will be back.

While workers of the world worry about a dystopian future in which robots take their jobs, at least one sector of the workforce can relax a little -for now- as Flippy, the appropriately named burger-flipping robot, has been taken off the job after only one day.

Flippy made its debut this week at CaliBurger, a fast food restaurant in Pasadena, California. The Miso Robotics robo-chef was supposed to assist its human counterparts in the kitchen but has been taken offline so it can get some upgrades in order to cook faster.

Two Canadian educational institutions this week faced blowback for campaigns intended to highlight the racial "privilege" of students.

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) put up posters encouraging students to "check their privilege" using a list of privileges such as "Christian," "White," "Heterosexual" and "Male."

Meanwhile, B.C.'s School District 74 put up posters featuring school administration officials highlighting their own encounters with racism and privilege.

Is Washington nuts? Increasing federal spending AND cutting taxes will explode the national debt

handshake money
Our national debt is rapidly approaching 21 trillion dollars, and yet Congress wants to follow up a large tax cut bill with a massive increase in federal spending. This is absolute madness, and it is going to make our long-term financial problems as a nation far worse. After passing the tax bill, the appropriate thing to do would have been to cut federal spending. Yes, that would have not been a positive thing for the economy in the short-term, but we must start addressing our long-term priorities. If we do not do something about this exploding national debt, it could potentially destroy our republic all by itself.

Earlier today, I was absolutely horrified when I learned of a budget deal in the Senate that would increase federal spending by about 200 billion dollars in each of the next two years...

Finian Cunningham: Who would gain from poisoning a Russian exile in Britain?

The British are well known for their dramatic flair when it comes to stories of Cold War espionage and murder mystery. Think Ian Fleming, John Le Carrรฉ and Agatha Christie.

But this week's episode of a former Russian spy being poisoned on a public park bench in a quaint English town has suspiciously a tad too much drama about it.

It is being speculated that the Russian exile, who had been living in Britain since 2010, may have been poisoned with a deadly nerve agent. He is reportedly in hospital in a critical condition.

Within hours of 66-year-old Sergei Skripal being rushed to hospital in Salisbury, along with his adult daughter, British politicians and media were cranking up the story that the pair had fallen victim to a murder plot implicating the Kremlin.

Jordan Peterson on gun control, #MeToo and why so few women run companies

jordan peterson

Two years ago, almost nobody had heard of University of Toronto psychology professor Jordan Peterson. Now his new book 12 Rules For Life: An Antidote to Chaos is one of the bestselling books on Amazon, his YouTube lectures have garnered millions of views, and he has become one of the most loathed and loved academics on the Internet. He spoke with TIME about his rise, his supporters and the news. All links to evidence in Peterson's responses were provided by him.

Are you surprised at the success of your new book 12 Rules for Life, which has been No.1 on Amazon for several weeks? Surprised barely covers it. I can't reconcile myself to what's been happening since September 2016.

How did it all start? I put three videos [on YouTube]. One objecting to new legislation in Canada that required a form of compelled speech under the guise of compassion for the downtrodden that I thought was a terrible, terrible mistake. Another objecting to the University of Toronto's requirement that its Human Resources staff undergo unconscious bias training, which I regard as scientifically suspect. And another detailing out the structure of what I regarded as the politically correct game. Those caused a tremendous amount of trouble.
