Lightning strikes kill 3 in Habiganj, Bangladesh

Three people were killed and another was injured in separate incidents of lightning strikes in Baniachang and Nabiganj upazilas of Habiganj on Thursday, reports UNB.

Mozammel Haque, officer-in-charge of Baniachang police station, said Madhu Mia, 45, of Baghhata village in Baniachang upazila was killed on the spot when a thunderbolt struck him amid rain around 10 am.

In another incident, Anhat Ali, 18, of Haldarpur village in the same upazila, was killed when a thunderbolt hit him while he was returning home in the morning.

Besides, a streak of thunderbolt struck Kimmot Ali, 52, and Walidur Rahman of Ramganj village in Nabiganj upazila while they were working on a filed in the morning, leaving them seriously injured.

They were taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital where doctors declared Kimmot Ali dead.

19 sheep and dog killed by lightning bolt in Karnataka, India

Mid-summer rain accompanied by gusty winds and hailstorm created havoc in Yadgir district on Thursday.

As many as 19 sheep and a dog were killed after being struck by lightning in Halegera village in Yadgir taluk.

The sheep belonged to Hanumantha of Halagera. The incident occurred when they were grazing.

At least 50 bags of paddy stored in a house were damaged completely.

About 50 kg of wheat and jowar flour was completely soaked after rainwater entered the flour mill after a tin-shed was blown away in Sagar village in Shahapur taluk of the district, according to Mahadevappa Halli, owner of the flour mill.

The worst dust storms in a decade blanket Northern China heading on to Japan and Korea with enough force to make it to the west coast of Canada and the USA. Noticeable is a cyclonic spin that was noticed in the USA super-storm that wiped out 40% of the USA wheat crop.

Wildfires spread from southern Georgia's Okefenokee National wildlife refuge into Florida forcing evacuations of 100,000+ people and burning 400,000 acres. Visible from space it looks like a volcanic eruption.

Two children killed by lightning bolt in Bihar, India

Two children were charred to death and other sustained serious burn injuries when lighting fell on them at Ariyaon Basfor tola under Krishnabraham police station area in the district this morning.

Police said here that the lightning fell on the children during heavy downpour in the district. The deceased were identified as Kishan Musahar (8) and Golu (9). A 12-year old child Pintu Musahar who sustained serious burn injuries had been admitted to a local hospital.

The children were playing outside their houses when the incident took place.

Bodies have been sent to Buxar Sadar Hospital for autopsy, police added.

Four killed by lightning strikes in Tamil Nadu, India

Lightning strikes accompanied by storms claimed the lives of four people, including two women in Madurai district last night.

Police said here today that a 40-year-old coolie, Sankarraj, was killed when he was struck by lightning at Sengapadai village in Tirumangalam taluk.

Another person Marudu, 48, died after being struck by lightning at Kanakkankudi village near Thirubhuvanam.

Two women identified as V. Periyakkam, 31, and Surayee, 46, were also died after being struck by lightning at Nainarpuram and Karisalkalampatti villages, respectively.

23 people killed by lightning strikes within 6 weeks across Myanmar (Burma)

A total of 23 people from Kachin, Kayah and Rakhine states as well as the Magwe, Tanintharyi, Yangon and Ayeyarwady regions, and Nay Pyi Taw, died as a result of being hit by lightning from April 1 to May 9.

The Department of Relief and Resettlement said a further 11 people had died and 14 people had been injured between March 6 and May 9 due to strong winds. The winds also resulted in 7000 houses collapsing and 770 houses and 120 monuments being damaged.

Strong winds and thunderstorms are expected throughout the country until month end.

The Department of Relief and Resettlement is handing out K300,000 as compensation to the families of the deceased and K50,000 to those who have been injured.

U Kyaw Lwin Oo, director from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, said people should be aware of the severe weather conditions due to Cumulonimbus clouds until the end of May.

Father and son killed by lightning bolt in Karnataka, India

A father-son duo was killed on the spot following a lightning strike at a field in Periyapatna in Mysuru on Tuesday.

Beeregowda, 47, and his son Shivakumar, 14, residents of Makoda Shetty Halli in the taluk, were at work when they were struck by lightning. Police said the duo was taking shelter under a tree after it started raining heavily around 2.45pm. The rain was accompanied by thunderstorms, and the tree under which they were standing was struck by lightning.

Periyapatna police said some villagers were at the field at the time of incident.

Two men killed by lightning bolt in Phitsanulok, Thailand

Two men were reportedly killed by lightning bolt at a rice field in Phitsanulok's Nakhon Thai district, police said on Wednesday morning.

Following the 9.30am report of the deaths, police went to the scene in Ban Kok Moung of Tambon Yang Klone and found the bodies of Humpaeng Sewadi and Bualan Booncherdchu, both 47, at a shack in the middle of a field.

Their clothes were torn and their bodies showed burn marks and bruises. It was estimated that they had been dead for at least 12 hours before their bodies were discovered. The bodies were sent for autopsies at Buddhachinaraj Hospital to determine the cause of death.

A preliminary investigation found that the two men had been hired to plough the rice field and were performing the task when a storm forced them to seek shelter at the shack, where they were apparently struck by lightning.

Tropical Storm Adrian kicked off a record early start to the 2017 eastern Pacific hurricane season Tuesday several hundred miles off the southern Mexican coast, but appears destined for a long-lived stall off the coast into at least next week.

Adrian was the earliest tropical cyclone to form in the northeast Pacific in the satellite era. This record was previously held by Hurricane Alma in 1990.

Here's the latest from the National Hurricane Center:
  • Tropical Storm Adrian is centered about 460 miles south-southeast of Salina Cruz, Mexico, and is moving slowly toward the northwest.
  • Adrian is forecast to gradually strengthen over the next few days, possibly becoming a hurricane by this weekend.
  • Adrian is also expected to slow down and may stall well off the southern Mexican coast by that time.

Lightning bolt kills 3 gravediggers in Vietnam

Three men have been fatally struck by lightning while digging a grave in central Vietnam for a deceased family member.

The incident occurred on Tuesday in Hung Trach District in Quang Binh province as five members of an extended family dug a grave for a recently deceased relative, police newspaper An Ninh Thu Do reported.

Two others were injured, the report said.

In a separate case, lightning also killed a 42-year-old woman in nearby Quang Nam province Tuesday, the Tuoi Tre newspaper said.
