Widespread flooding in Mozambique leaves at least 28 dead and more than 58,000 affected

At least 28 people have been killed and more than 58 800 affected in the latest floods to hit the disaster-prone Mozambique.

Some 66 people have been injured during the crisis affecting regions still recovering from the Cylones Idai and Kenneth early last year.

The Cabo Delgado, Sofala and Zambezia provinces are the hardest-hit but Gaza, Manica, Maputo, Nampula, Niassa and Tete are also affected.

More than 10 200 houses have been damaged or destroyed, including 2 589 completely shattered, and at least 47 schools have been affected.

In Zambezia, the province with the highest number of people affected, flooding since the beginning of 2020 has damaged infrastructure, destroyed crops and led to displacement.

Nearly 2 300 hectares of crops are currently flooded, less than two months before the planned harvest.

Heavy rain triggers floods and landslides in southern Peru

Heavy rain has several triggered landslides and flooding in Arequipa Department in the south of Peru.

According to Andina, the state owned news agency, flash floods and landslides struck on 22 January 2020 in the district of Uchumayo, affecting the communities of Congata and Cerro Verde. Over 80 homes have been damaged, including seven severely. Roads have been closed in the affected area. Damage assessments are ongoing.

The previous day heavy rain caused landslides in the area of Villa Unión, also in Uchumayo district, blocking roads and affecting 3 families, according to reports from Peru's National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI). A similar situation was reported in Yura district, where around 15 people were affected and roads were blocked.

A severe storm brought powerful winds, cold temperatures, snow and coastal flooding to wide areas of Spain from 20 January. Media blamed at least 4 deaths on the storm. Satellite images show storm surge swept 3km inland in Tarragona Province, resulting in severe damage to rice paddies and the ecosystem.

The storm, named "Gloria" by the State Meteorological Agency of Spain, AEMET, produced waves of over 8 metres along the coastline of south-eastern Spain on 20 January.

AEMET reported wind gusts of 115 km/h in Oliva, Valencia, on 20 January and 106 km/h in Barcelona the next day.

Heavy rain was also reported, with Barx in Valencia recording 190.4mm of rain in 24 hours to 20 January.

The following day Horta de Sant Joan in Tarragona Province, Catalonia, recorded 227.4mm.

Continued heavy rain over the last 2 weeks has caused death and damage in regions of Madagascar, including the capital, Antananarivo. More severe weather has been forecast, with warnings issued for heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas.

The country's disaster agency BNGRC reported severe damage in Antananarivo after heavy rain on 08 January, 2020. According to BNGRC, 4 people died and over 40 houses were damaged or destroyed, leaving 136 people displaced and almost 400 affected.

During the same period, media reported that 2 people had been swept away by flood waters in Andapa in the northern Sava Region. Around 60 people were rescued from the flooding.

Over 200 people were evacuated after a storm caused flooding in Tucumán province in northwest of Argentina.

According to Télam news agency, the storm and heavy rain from 15 to 16 January 2020 caused flooding in the municipalities of Famaillá, La Reducción, La Madrid, Los Ralos and Yerba Buena.

The worst affected area was Famaillá, where around 100 people evacuated their homes. Local media, quoting figures from Argentina's National Meteorological Service (SMN), said that 132mm of rain fell in 24 hours in Famaillá.

Spain's Costa Blanca and Valencian coastline have been pummelled by a vicious storm this morning, shutting Alicante airport, flooding homes and blanketing areas with at least a foot of snow.

Flights to London, Newcastle, Bristol, Edinburgh and other major cities were cancelled as the airport shut for the day, forcing holidaymakers to either travel to a different airport or sit tight until the dangerous weather moved on.

Towering waves have been pictured slamming into the coastline while, in Denia, seawater was filmed gushing through the streets of the city.

Snow drifts have also built up inland as a seven-hour shower in Villena, Valencia, left the city's 35,000 inhabitants cut off after up to three inch piles of the white stuff blocked roads.

A red alert was issued for Storm Gloria yesterday, before it smashed into the region, warning it would bring heavy rain, snow, up to 75mph winds and waves that could reach eight feet in height.

Nine people have been confirmed dead in seven villages across Kaur regency in Bengkulu after a suspension bridge in Bungin Tambun III village in the regency collapsed on Sunday afternoon on account of a flash flood hitting the area.

Apart from the casualties, the local search and rescue team also recorded that a local identified as Ipan was still unaccounted for.

"We launch a search and rescue mission today and tomorrow to look for the missing person. We'll look for him at the mouth of the river," Bengkulu Search and Rescue Agency head Abdul Malik told The Jakarta Post on Monday.

Flooding and landslides triggered by torrential rains have claimed six lives in southeast Brazil, firefighters said Saturday.

Footage on social media showed streets in Espirito Santo state turned into rivers and cars being swept away by raging, muddy water.

In one clip, the water almost reaches the roof of a gas station.

The fatalities happened in the towns of Iconha and Alfredo Chaves, with three deaths in each town. In the latter, two of the victims were elderly people who died after a landslide engulfed their home in mud.

Dangerous storms described as a one-in-100-year event have swept through South-East Queensland overnight and into the morning, dumping heavy rain and causing flash flooding in parts of Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

The SES has responded to more than 100 callouts on the Gold Coast alone, and another 60 between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

Police have reported localised flash flooding in Chelmer, Kenmore Hills, Birkdale and Helensvale.

Emergency services carried out two swift water rescues of people trapped in their cars in floodwaters at Nerang and Oxenford.

A mother and child were also safely rescued after a tree fell on their car at Currumbin Waters, also bringing down power lines.

Severe weather including lightning strikes, heavy rain and hail storms has affected several departments in Bolivia since 11 January 2020, with at least 6 fatalities reported.

Chuquisaca Department

In Chuquisaca Department, a storm and heavy rain caused the Quirpinchaca river to overflow, flooding several districts in Sucre City from around 13 January. Over 60 families were affected. Media reported 1 person died as a result of flooding and 2 others as a result of lightning strike during the storm.
