Disaster authorities in Vietnam report that 7 people have died and 1 is still missing after heavy rainfall triggered flash floods and landslides.
According to Vietnam Disaster Management Authority (DMA), heavy rain, flooding and landslides have caused damage in the provinces and cities of Yen Bai, Hoa Binh, Phu Tho, Ha Giang, Hanoi, Binh Duong, Vinh Phuc, Son La, Tuyen Quang, Lai Chau, Cao Bang, Dien Bien, Quang Ninh.
Some areas of Vietnam saw more than 300mm of rain in a period 16 to 19 August, including Cai Chien in Quang Ninh Province, Cat Ba in Hai Phong and Thai Nguyen City. The heavy rain fall is associated with Tropical Storm Higos which made landfall in the southern Guangdong province of China on 19 August before moving towards Vietnam and Laos.

Heavy monsoon rains have flooded parts of India's capital New Delhi and its suburbs, throwing life out of gear for millions of people, as the death toll from the annual deluge across South Asia rose to nearly 1,300.
In New Delhi's suburb of Gurgaon, dubbed the Millenium City, roads, underpasses and residential areas were flooded on Wednesday forcing power cuts in several areas. Rafts were put into action to evacuate people in some areas.
The monsoon is vital to the densely populated region, revitalising land and waterways amid scorching summers. But it also causes widespread death and destruction.
At least 14 people were killed and 16 others went missing in floods and landslides in various districts of Sudurpaschim and Karnali provinces in the last 24 hours.
Achham, a hill district in Sudurpaschim Province, has been hit hardest as gushing floodwaters from Kailash Khola entered several settlements in Ramroshan Rural Municipality causing a massive human and property loss.
At least six people died in the disaster while 11 others are missing, according to the district police.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Yogendra Singh Thapa said four bodies were recovered from Koseda area in Darna of Bannigadi Jayagad Rural Municipality while two other bodies were found at Lamatna and Seri in Mangalsen Municipality. Search was underway for the missing people until late Wednesday afternoon.
China's Chongqing province braces for the worst flood in decades as the Cuntan Station on the Yangtze River saw its highest water level since 1939 on Thursday morning (Aug 20).
According to the Chongqing Emergency Response Bureau, the water at the Cuntan station was measured at 191.51m, 0.1 meter higher than the devastating flood which left 1.5 million people homeless in July 1981.
More than 8,660 sq km of arable land in the province were flooded. The direct economic loss caused by the floods was about 2 billion yuan (S$394 million).
Its authorities upgraded its flood-control response to Level I on Tuesday, the highest rung in the four-tier emergency response system for floods.
NASA-NOAA's Suomi NPP satellite snaps Tropical Storm Higos' landfall
Typhoon Higos, the seventh typhoon this year, made landfall on the coast of Zhuhai City, south China's Guangdong Province at around 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
China's Central Meteorological Station issued an orange alert and expected Higos to move northwest at a speed of about 20 kilometers per hour and will gradually weaken.
The Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau downgraded the typhoon signal from the highest to No. 3 as Typhoon Higos was leaving the city, and Macao's Border Gate and Zhuhai-Macao cross-boundary industrial zone reopened at around 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

Three Gorges Dam braces for 'No. 5 Flood' days after 'No. 4 Flood' struck
Sichuan Province, which sits on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, on Monday (Aug. 17) braced for some of the worst flooding seen in over 70 years, likely to bring the "No. 5 Flood" downstream to the beleaguered Three Gorges Dam.
After the "No. 4 Flood" of the year passed through the Three Gorges Dam on Saturday (Aug. 15), the Changjiang Water Resources Commission (CWRC) issued an orange flood warning for the Jialing River and its tributary Fu River on the upper reaches of the Yangtze in Sichuan Province on Sunday (Aug. 16). It predicted that the latest bout of flooding will likely form the "No. 5 Flood" of the year and could come only two or three days after the previous one.
The peak of the No. 4 flood on the Yangtze River passed through the Three Gorges Reservoir at around 8 a.m. on the 15th. The water inflow reached 62,000 cubic meters per second, which was higher than the previous three floods this year.
Gansu province, normally one of China's driest regions, has been hit with nearly a week of torrential rains that have triggered mudslides, swept away bridges and snapped power lines. State television footage shot August 17, 2020, shows mudslides and rising water that swept away bridges, damaged power lines and trapped more than 10,000 local residents in Longnan, a city in the county of Wenxian in the northwestern province.
Flooding has worsened in Telangana state in southern India. Meanwhile the neighbouring state of Andhra Pradesh has also seen flooding over recent days.
Almost 15 million people have been affected and around 850 people have lost their lives as a result of this year's monsoon in India, according to figures from the Ministry of Home Affairs Disaster Management Division (DMD).

Flooding that began in Telangana last week has now affected the districts of Jayashankar Bhupalpally , Hyderabad, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Warangal urban, Warangal rural, Karimnagar, Mancherial, Komaram Bheem, Nirmal and Peddapalli.
The Godavari river is still above the danger mark at Bhadrachalam and Dummugudem in Bhadradri Kothagudem district.
At least 18 people were killed and 21 others reported missing after a massive landslide hit Nepal's Sindhupalchowk district, authorities said on Sunday, adding that a search and rescue operation was going on in the affected area.
The landslide, which occurred on Friday in the district's Jugal Rural Municipality, also damaged 37 houses in Lidi village.
Among the 18 victims, there were 11 children, four women and three men, Superintendent of Police Prajwol Maharjan, chief of District Police Office, Sindhupalchowk, told Xinhua news agency.
The local administration has relocated affected people to a nearly safe location.
"A nearby hill has also remained split open and there are 25 houses below that hill," said Maharjan.
