Just after 7am on Saturday 30th April 2011, Christchurch was shaken by a 5.2 aftershock. This was centered 65 kilometers from the city center.

Christchurch continues to experience aftershocks as the national state of emergency in New Zealand draws to a close. As from May, the Christchurch Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) will take over the planning and recovery process in the city.
Another Large Aftershock Felt in Christchurch

At 7:08am on Saturday 30th April, Geonet recorded a 5.2 aftershock in the Christchurch region. It released 879 tons of energy and was rated as 6 on the Mercalli scale. This rating describes potential effects as follows: "Felt by everyone. Difficult to stand. Some heavy furniture moved, some plaster falls. Chimneys may be slightly damaged." The motion was somewhat subdued in Christchurch due to the distance but was still obvious as a significant aftershock. Facebook comments within minutes indicated the large area affected and included the following: "Really felt it here in Oxford! Almost felt like September again just shorter. Threw me out of bed! Woke me up in Kaiapoi but I wasn't quite sure if we were having one. Everyone else still asleep. Too tired after staying up late last night to watch the wedding. Felt that in Redwood, so much for a sleep in. Felt that in Belfast - also heard from dad in Rakaia who said his house shook really badly. Felt it in Ashburton. Woke me up with a sudden jolt."

Christchurch experienced five aftershocks in the 24 hours preceding the 5.2 shake. These ranged from a 2.8 to a 3.8.

US: 4.3 earthquake measured 84 miles southeast of El Paso

A 4.3 earthquake shook part of West Texas and Northern Chihuahua late Wednesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The temblor was centered in the state of Chihuahua about 40 miles south of Fort Hancock, Texas, said Aaron Velasco, a seismologist and chairman of the Geology Department at the University of Texas at El Paso.

UTEP has a seismograph that records seismic activity.

Velasco said the earthquake occurred in an area that includes a valley used for agriculture and some mountains.

The earthquake began just before 11 p.m. on Wednesday and emanated from about 6.2 miles deep in the earth. The region of the epicenter is about 84 miles southeast of El Paso.

Velasco said the shaking took place in a region that does not appear to have a history of significant earthquake activity.

"There was a whole sequence of events," he said. "There was a 4.3 and a 4.1 earthquake and six to seven smaller ones. We're going to study this further."

5.4 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Residents Of Central Indonesia

An earthquake sent residents fleeing in central Indonesia.

An earthquake that hit waters off Indonesia's main island of Java sent panicked residents fleeing from their homes and office buildings.

No tsunami warning was issued, and there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.4 and hit 88 miles south of Cirebon city.

It was centered nearly 50 miles beneath the ocean floor.

El Shinta radio reported the temblor triggered widespread panic in the nearby town of Garut.

Indonesia is on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

A series of five earth tremors, with the first occurring at around midnight, were felt in various localities in Malta yesterday, as reports of shaking and objects moving on the shelves reached this newspaper.

The first earthquake, of magnitude 3.5, occurred early this morning at around eleven minutes past midnight, about 37 km east of Malta. This was followed by other events at approximately the same location.

The next quake, of magnitude 3.3, occurred at 3:34am, then at 4:44am a third quake of magnitude 2.5 occurred. The next one was at around 6:39am, and of magnitude 3.5 and the final one happened at around 11.30am. Another tremor, the strongest at 4.0 on the richter scale was felt just after 3pm. Pakistan: 5.0 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Jammu and Kashmir

An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale struck Jammu and Kashmir Monday morning. The epicentre of the quake was located in Pakistan, the local disaster management authority said.

"The earthquake was of mild intensity with coordinates measuring 36.23 north and 72.17 east. It struck at 6.25 a.m. Its epicentre lay in Pakistan. No damage has been reported from anywhere so far," said Amir Ali, in-charge of the the disaster management cell at the provincial headquarters here.

It may be mentioned that more than half a dozen earthquakes have rocked the Valley during the last two months. Jammu and Kashmir is located in a highly seismic zone.

More than 40,000 people were killed in a massive quake, measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, that rocked this state in 2005.

Strong, shallow earthquake hits eastern Indonesia

A strong and shallow earthquake hit eastern Indonesia early Monday, sending residents, hotels guests and patients from a hospital fleeing in panic. Some homes were damaged, with windows shattered and walls cracked, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude-6.2 quake was centered 45 miles (75 kilometers) southeast of Kendari, a town on Sulawesi island, at a depth of just 6 miles (9 kilometers). It was followed by three strong aftershocks.

Andre Wijaya, a geological official in Kendari, said the earth shook violently beneath his feet.

"Women and children were screaming as they ran from their homes and into nearby fields," said Lt. Laode Surachman, a police officer in Kendari, adding that hotels emptied out and patients in a hospital were evacuated to safety. "Even officers taking part in morning roll call scattered and fled."

Indonesia straddles a series of fault lines that make the vast island nation prone to volcanic and seismic activity.

A giant quake off the country on Dec. 26, 2004, triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed 230,000 people, half of them in Indonesia's westernmost province of Aceh.

US: Preliminary magnitude-3.1 quake rumbles in Arkansas

The U.S. Geological Survey has recorded a preliminary magnitude-3.1 earthquake near Greenbrier in central Arkansas.

The quake was recorded at 7:20 a.m. Saturday three miles northeast of Greenbrier - about 35 miles north of Little Rock. Greenbrier police say there weren't any reports of injuries or damage. A magnitude-2.2 quake was recorded in the same area 20 minutes later.

Seismologists have recorded some 1,000 quakes in the region since September - including a magnitude 4.7 in February that was the strongest earthquake recorded in Arkansas in 35 years.

The latest quakes come after two natural gas exploration companies - Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake Energy Corp. and Clarita Operating LLC - agreed this week to keep two nearby injection wells shutdown as researchers study whether the operations are linked to the quakes.

US, California: 3.6 Earthquake Shakes East County

Quake Centered Near Vallecito, About 16 Miles East-Southeast Of Julian

A magnitude 3.6 earthquake shook eastern San Diego County on Saturday, according to automated seismographs and computers operated by the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake was centered near the village of Vallecito, about 16 miles east-southeast of Julian, or about 50 miles east-northeast of downtown San Diego. It hit at 1:49 p.m.

The quake was in a seismically-active valley along the Great Southern Overland Stage Route Of 1849, a bit northwest of the cluster of thousands of aftershocks from last year's magnitude 7.2 Mexicali earthquake.
