Dangers in the Quest for Beauty

The quest for eternal youth and beauty is an age-old one, with history replete with strange forms of body modification from bone-crushing corsets to foot binding.

Cosmetic surgery has made the painstaking quest to achieve cultural beauty ideals all the more accessible, a commodity that is up for sale to those willing to pay.

But is the explosion of plastic surgery, once the domain of the rich and vain but now affordable to many, an insidious trend that will change the landscape of how we perceive ourselves?

And what are the risks?

Lauren Edgar, 28, paid the ultimate price for perfection.

The South Australian Coroner's Court opened an inquest into the Adelaide's woman death in November, with her grieving parents the first to give evidence.

Comment: For a more in depth look at the many dangers associated with the 'Quest for Beauty', read the excellent book by Naomi Wolf The Beauty Myth: How Images of Beauty Are Used Against Women
In a country where the average woman is 5-foot-4 and weighs 140 pounds, movies, advertisements, and MTV saturate our lives with unrealistic images of beauty. The tall, nearly emaciated mannequins that push the latest miracle cosmetic make even the most confident woman question her appearance. Feminist Naomi Wolf argues that women's insecurities are heightened by these images, then exploited by the diet, cosmetic, and plastic surgery industries. Every day new products are introduced to "correct" inherently female "flaws," drawing women into an obsessive and hopeless cycle built around the attempt to reach an impossible standard of beauty. Wolf rejects the standard and embraces the naturally distinct beauty of all women.

Stomach Stapling Kills

The death of an obese woman and her unborn child underscores the concern many health professionals have about the risks of pregnancy so soon after having gastric bypass surgery. The deaths, reported two years ago, were the first suffered by a woman and an unborn child due to complications from such surgery.

The big concern: Women make up the majority of the 110,000 people who have gastric bypass surgery, largely during their childbearing years.
  • About 20 percent of the patients who choose gastric bypass surgery will suffer complications.
  • An estimated 1 to 4 out of every 200 patients will die from those complications.
  • Eighty-five percent of all gastric bypass surgeries are done on women, primarily during their childbearing years.
  • Tears or hernias weren't uncommon, experts say, and could happen up to five years after surgery.
Because the surgery lessens the number of nutrients available to a fetus and can lead to serious infections, many physicians prescribe contraceptives for two years after the surgery to avoid pregnancy until a woman's weight stabilizes. Also more common are pregnancies a year after the surgery because fertility rises with a major weight loss.

Flashback Bride Who had Stomach Stapled Died of Starvation

A bride desperate to be slim for her wedding day died of starvation after stomach stapling surgery went wrong.

Emma Favell, 32, paid a Belgian clinic 7,000 to carry out the radical procedure and within six months her weight dropped from 23 stones to 15 stones.

By the time she married in March, she weighed around eight-and-a-half stones and was able to slip into a size 8 wedding dress.

But an inquest has heard how a mistake in the operation meant she was not able to give her body the nutrition she needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle and she died a month later.

Stomach Stapling Stops After Patient Dies

The death of a 37-year-old woman after stomach-reduction surgery has raised new concerns about the potential risks of this rapidly growing operation.

Officials at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston say they are investigating whether a faulty staple gun may have misfired during Ann Marie Simonelli's gastric bypass surgery and contributed to her death days later. They have suspended the popular surgery while the investigation continues.

Dr. Anthony Whittemore, chief medical officer at the hospital, said the ban on laproscopic bypass surgery was a safety precaution that would not necessarily be permanent.

"We temporarily halt this activity as a means of coping with this particular situation till we understand what actually occurred," Whittemore said.

Do You Have Gluten Whiplash?

Gluten Whiplash
© Gluten Free Society
Going gluten free can be a saving grace for many. However; a common clinical manifestation called Gluten Whiplash occurs for many who do not go TRUE gluten free.

The Gluten Whiplash Effect typically occurs 3-6 months after starting a gluten free diet. Let me explain. When one initially goes gluten free, a state of dietary distress and confusion sets in. Many limit their diets to an extreme because they are not quite sure what to eat. The typical gluten free diet learning curve takes 8-12 weeks. This is because one must spend enough time educating themselves about acceptable products, restaurants, etc. During this time, the body starts to heal and most people do very well noticing dramatic improvements in their health.

Once the learning curve is conquered, people tend to gravitate toward the processed, packaged "gluten free" food items. People tend to get lazy and make the choice of convenience over health. BIG MISTAKE! This is where Gluten Whiplash tends to set in.

What is Gluten Whiplash?

Gluten whiplash is a clinical phenomena that I have observed over and over again where a patient starts to develop disease symptoms after being gluten free for several months. The typical case coincides with the liberal use of processed "gluten free" products. For detailed information on this, watch this video now.

The Hidden Link Between Gluten Intolerance and PMS, Infertility and Miscarriage

Millions of women are suffering from complaints that could be easily addressed with correct diagnosis and treatment of gluten sensitivity.

Gluten intolerance, an umbrella term that includes gluten sensitivity and celiac disease, doesn't just affect the digestive system: it is linked to more than 300 diseases and conditions. Among the most common are those stemming from deficiencies, excesses and imbalances of female hormones. In fact, there's a good chance that correct diagnosis and treatment of gluten intolerance may be all that's needed to resolve hormone-related medical problems.

4% of Fukushima babies may be severely intellectually disabled

Fukushima local government collected dosimeters from 25,000 children.

The average monthly dose was 120 microSv/h, but the max was 450 microSv/h.

Because even people who did not submit the dosimeter received "a result" for some reason, it's highly likely to be manipulated as well.

450 microSv/m is known to cause severe damage to unborn babies.

Raw Cookie Dough Linked to E. Coli Outbreak

Image
© iStockHealth experts are warning of the dangers associated with eating cookie dough.
Licking the spoon for a couple tastes of raw cookie dough is an added bonus to the baking process, especially at holiday time, but the risk of falling ill from the batter might be greater than once thought.

New research published in the journal Clinical Infectious Disease found that the culprit of a 2009 multi-state E. coli outbreak was none other than the ready-to-bake prepackaged cookie dough found in most grocery stores. At the time of the outbreak, 77 people from 30 states became ill from the bad batter. About half of those people got so sick they had to be hospitalized.

After a thorough investigation, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control still have yet to fully pinpoint the ingredient in the cookie dough that caused the outbreak, but CDC study author Dr. Karen Neil said researchers believe the problem was in the flour. Raw flour does not go through the same rigorous process to kill pathogens the way in which eggs, molasses and sugar do in commercial products.

Acid Reflux Linked to Gluten Intolerance

A recent research study linked peptic disease (heartburn, GERD, stomach ulcer) to gluten exposure in patients with gluten sensitivity.
PD (peptic disease) is not uncommon in the presentation of CD (celiac disease). It is more likely to be found in the second decade of life. CD should be included in the differential diagnosis of patients with non-HP(H pylori) PD and we suggest routine CD serology and small bowel biopsy in patients with unexplained PD.
The authors of this study recommend that all patients with non infectious peptic disease be screened for celiac disease.

Gastric Reflux is A Common Symptom of Gluten Exposure

I commonly see patients with a conglomeration of gastric symptoms that are directly caused by gluten exposure. Reflux, heartburn, ulcer disease, Barrett's esophagus, and even hernia are some of the more common diseases I have seen go into remission with the implementation of a TRUE gluten free diet.
