The death toll from the ongoing floods in the country has hit 38, with the Kenya Red Cross now warning that the flood situation is moving from an emergency to a disaster level.
Over 60 families in Kirinyaga County have been rendered homeless after River Thiba burst its banks, leaving behind a trail of misery and destruction.
The affected residents were rudely woken up during the night by waters from the flooded river, forcing hundreds including children to spend the night in the cold after their homes were completely submerged. Property of unknown value was also destroyed by the floods.
"It is bad, it is a disaster. The people we find mostly getting affected are the people without alternatives, we are trying as much as possible with our teams to map out the populations at risk," Venant Ndhigila, Head of disaster Operations, Kenya Red Cross, said.
Seventy-six people in Kenya have lost their lives to floods triggered by torrential monsoon downpours since March, the government said Saturday, warning residents "to brace for even heavier rainfall".
Kenya and its East African neighbours have been battered by stronger than usual rain in recent weeks, compounded by the El Nino weather pattern.
Flash floods have submerged roads and neighbourhoods, leading to the displacement of more than 130,000 people across 24,000 households, many of them in the capital Nairobi, government spokesman Isaac Mwaura said Saturday.
"We deeply regret to announce the tragic loss of an additional six lives in the last 12 hours bringing the total to 76," he said, adding that 29 Kenyans had suffered injuries and 19 been reported missing.
A landslide struck the tiny island of Therasia (sometimes spelled Thirasia), situated near Santorini in the Greek Cyclades, on Saturday, according to reports. No injuries were reported, although several stores suffered considerable damage.
The incident took place just after 7 p.m. in Korfos, a settlement located on the eastern side of Therasia, serving as the port for the island's capital, Manolas.
The Ibu volcano on Halmahera Island in the eastern Indonesian province of North Maluku erupted early Sunday, according to the country's Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG).
PVMBG reported that the volcano erupted at around 00:37 a.m. local time for about 206 seconds, throwing ash up to 3,500 meters above its peak.
Standing as high as 1,325 meters above sea level, Ibu volcano is classified as in the second danger level, below the highest level of IV.
PVMBG called on the public not to have activities within a radius of 3.5 kilometers from the crater.
Located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia is one of the countries with the most volcanoes in the world.
A spectacular weather scene off a Xpu-Ha beach had sunbathers recording it with their phones. On Thursday afternoon, a massive waterspout made a brief appearance off the beach.
The beach, which is around 25 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen, had some mesmerized by the natural regional event that happens several times a year. A perfectly formed waterspout appeared to exist motionless above the sea while people watched from land.
The sudden formation of the spout, which is a whirling column of air and water, was seen around 2:00 p.m. and was captured on numerous videos. The development of the waterspout is believed related to the afternoon development of large cumulus clouds.
The waterspout remained at sea and did not cause any land damage, something that has happened in the past. In the summer of 2022, a fast moving waterspout developed over the sea off a Playa del Carmen beach.
At least five people were killed and 33 others injured when a tornado struck Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, on Saturday.
All the injured persons who were reported in the city's Baiyun district were promptly sent to the hospital for treatment, according to a statement released by Baiyun district government on Saturday night.
The search and rescue work has been basically completed as of Saturday night, it said.
The tornado, which was accompanied by downpours, thunder and lightning, also destroyed and damaged 141 factory and residential houses in the district, which was hardest hit by the extreme weather in the southern metropolis, the statement said.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck 102 kilometers (63 miles) south of Banjar city at a depth of 68.3 kilometers (42.4 miles). There was no tsunami warning.
High-rises in the capital Jakarta swayed for around a minute and two-story homes shook strongly in the West Java provincial capital of Bandung and in Jakarta's satellite cities of Depok, Tangerang, Bogor and Bekasi. The quake was also felt in other cities in West Java, Yogyakarta and East Java province, according to Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency.
Police officers fatally shot a pit bull mauling his owner inside a New York City apartment.
The 41-year-old man was being attacked in his apartment in the Bronx just before 3:10 a.m. Friday.
"There was a girl in the apartment and she was yelling that he was unconscious and then was like oh, call 911, look he's unconscious, he can't get up. And that's when the cops finally came and they got into the apartment," said Gilbert Durecout, a building resident.
Destructive tornadoes gutted homes as they plowed through Nebraska and Iowa, and the dangerous storm threat could escalate Saturday as tornado-spawning storms pose a risk from Michigan to Texas.
The area of Elkhorn in Omaha, Nebraska, is one of the hardest-hit communities after severe storms barreled through parts of the Plains and South early Friday afternoon. A powerful tornado leveled homes, which crews were searching for anyone trapped or injured, local authorities announced Friday during a news conference.
Meanwhile in nearby Iowa, a large tornado was reported in the small city of Minden, according to the National Weather Service. Footage obtained by CNN shows the devastation of mangled structures and widespread debris.
The severe weather threat is expected to continue through Sunday, with Saturday possibly being the most dangerous day. Strong tornadoes are possible from Michigan to Texas, including in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Kansas City, Wichita, Dallas, Austin, Milwaukee and Chicago.
A dead whale has washed up on a beach in Marblehead, Massachusetts.
The humpback whale was stranded in the surf near Preston Beach Thursday afternoon, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said.
"Seacoast Science Center, Tufts University, town officials and NOAA Fisheries are working together this morning to evaluate options for examination of the carcass," a spokesperson for NOAA Fisheries said Friday in a release.
The public was reminded to keep a safe distance from all marine mammals.
There are numerous organizations trained to respond to stranded or deceased marine animals. If you come across one, you're encouraged to report it. NOAA has a list of organizations by region here.
History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.
