SOTT Focus: Make America Great Again? Things Not Looking Good For The 'Internet Generation'

"The American University is in the grip of mass hysteria." This is how Heather MacDonald begins her lecture 'The Diversity Delusion'. I think we can all agree that this is the case. It doesn't help that teachers are being fired for not giving students partial credit for no work done. When well-off and coddled students claim to be 'fearful for their lives' due to being 'surrounded by oppressors, transphobes and racists,' and when young doctors protest over 'fact-based' medicine, we can probably agree that we are in a pretty bad spot. But, as I recently found out, it appears things are only going to get worse.

I came across a book by Jean M. Twenge called the iGen: Why Today's Super-Connected Kids Are Growing Up Less Rebellious, More Tolerant, Less Happy - and Completely Unprepared for Adulthood. This book - chock full of statistics, graphs and charts - provides a shocking picture of the generation that is now moving through universities and colleges, and it is not looking pretty.

Jury finds Chicago police officer guilty of murder in Laquan McDonald 2014 fatal shooting

A Chicago jury has found former police officer Jason Van Dyke guilty of murder for the fatal 2014 shooting of a black teenager. The shooting ignited widespread protests and fanned racial tensions in the already violent city.

The jury found Van Dyke guilty of second-degree murder, making him the first Chicago police officer to be found guilty of murder while on duty in almost 50 years. Van Dyke was originally charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery, and official misconduct, for his role in the shooting dead of black teenager Laquan McDonald in 2014.

Van Dyke shot McDonald from ten feet away, after McDonald disobeyed commands to drop the folding knife he was carrying. Van Dyke fired 16 shots at McDonald, with a grand jury adding one count of aggravated battery for each bullet fired. He was found guilty of all 16 counts of aggravated battery, but cleared of official misconduct.

In the aftermath of McDonald's death, three other police officers - including Van Dyke's partner on the night - were charged last year with attempting to cover up the shooting, to which they pleaded not guilty.

'It's child abuse': Sweden Democrats Party makes move to ban baby circumcision

One of the leaders of right-wing Sweden Democrats Party (SDP) has called for a ban on non-medical male circumcision, dubbing the practice "backward" child abuse in a draft motion put to Swedish parliament.

Sweden Democrats Secretary Richard Jomshof put forward the non-binding motion, entitled "Prohibition of non-medical circumcision," calling for parliament to act on a procedure that the SDP considers "regular abuse of the individual child as well as an infringement of the child's integrity and self-determination." A vote on the circumcision motion has not yet been scheduled.

If the motion is approved, the ban would mean that circumcisions could no longer be carried out for religious reasons. Jews perform the procedure on 8-day-old babies, while those of the Muslim faith perform the cut later in childhood.

Social Democrat Prime Minister Stefan Lofven previously stated that the SDP is "rooted in racism and Nazism," and voting for them is"dangerous" for the nation, adding that a vote for the anti-immigration party was "like trying to quench fire with alcohol." The Sweden Democrats hold 18 percent of the seats in parliament.

The US swimming authorities have voted to introduce a new "stated gender" section for registering athletes who want to choose which gender they compete as.

The proposal, known as R-1, was voted on by USA Swimming's annual House of Delegates (HOD).

It outlines the rights of transgender athletes, and states that swimmers can choose male or female gender identity "to support a sport culture of inclusion and diversity, while assuring a fair competitive environment."

A Pakistani ice cream seller says he is the "unluckiest man in the world" as he only discovered he was the owner of a bank account worth billions once the funds had already been withdrawn.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Sunday froze the bank account of Abdul Qadir from Karachi, after 2.25 billion rupees ($27mn) was found sitting in the account.

The agency is understood to have traced the account, held in a private bank, as part of an ongoing probe into fake accounts used for money laundering, in which Pakistan's former president Asif Ali Zardari is also alleged to be involved in.

"I am the most unlucky man in the world. When I came to know about [the huge sum], it was no longer there," the 52-year-old said in a television interview.

Creative capitalism? Switzerland as a model for Western civilization

Switzerland
© Arnd Wiegmann / Reuters
Is there any hope in the Western World that individual citizens can win some release from the relentless and imprisoning growth of government? In the US, government spending, a reasonable proxy for their power over us, increases every year, except for a few minor blips. The citizens' situation becomes more and more dire. We have precious little say and little influence over our taxes, our health care, our energy and water supplies and costs, not to mention the social rules with which the government constrains us. The number of rules and regulations, using the proxy of pages in the Federal Register, also increases every year, and very few rules are removed. The government closes in on us more and more every day.

There is one western country that we might look at to see a glimpse of hope. That country is Switzerland. In a small landlocked country with precious little in the way of natural resources except water, the people have created a high level of prosperity based on innovation and creative capitalism.

Comment: Switzerland hasn't entirely escaped the ills plaguing Western economies:

Bezos' move to raise Amazon wages is a Machiavellian ploy

For the many low wage Amazon workers - both full time and temporary - set to receive a raise thanks to the just announced boost in minimum pay to $15/hour, the news is certainly a big plus. It should also be noted that had Amazon not been subject to intense scrutiny and criticism from the likes of Bernie Sanders and others, Jeff Bezos never would have responded with such an aggressive move. That said, if you think a little beyond the surface level about why he's doing this now and what his real motives are, it becomes clear nobody should take this move at face value.

Stacy Mitchell, co-director at the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, is someone whose work on Amazon I've cited on various occasions. She tweeted out an important thread this morning that helps you take a step back and not miss the forest for the trees.

Crooked cop caught on his own body camera robbing an elderly man having a heart attack

Officer Linnard R. Crouch
Officer Linnard R. Crouch was seen on his own body camera - not helping a 74-year-old man who was having a heart attack - but robbing him. The elderly victim, James Mabe had the cash to go buy Christmas presents for his grandchildren, but because the cop robbed him instead of helped him he'd never make it. Now, the officer who stole a dying elderly man's Christmas money will not be going to jail.

Last month, with almost no news coverage, Crouch pleaded guilty to robbing the elderly dying man. Instead of being punished for his utter betrayal of public trust and despicable act, Crouch was given probation and will not spend one day behind bars.

But that's not all, Crouch has a history of corruption. Crouch was suspended prior to robbing a dying elderly man on Christmas after several complaints were filed against him, dating back to 2011.

The former officer failed to complete incident reports, left information out of other completed reports and failed to wear his body camera at all times while on duty, according to a 68-page notice of suspension and a list of official complaints included as an exhibit with Linda Mabe's lawsuit filed last year.
