Best of the Web: A look inside the United States evangelical power market

Candace Owens has broken her silence, raising unsettling questions about the world behind Turning Point USA and its religious arm. Her concern centers on the sudden death of Charlie Kirk, a rising conservative figure whose growing doubts about unwavering support for Israel may have made him a target. Owens has publicly criticized Turning Point USA (TPUSA) leadership and Pastor Rob McCoy, asking why neither has done more, and pressed for a full investigation or demanded accountability from the FBI, whose limited findings and exotic stories have left the public unconvinced. With receipts showing Kirk's ideological shift and McCoy's deep entanglement in faith-based political mobilization, Owens hints at a shadowed network where political ambition, religious authority, financial gains, and potentially foreign interests intersect, in a world where the line between spiritual guidance and covert influence is dangerously blurred.

In recent months, conservative media have watched with sharpened curiosity as Owens openly distanced herself from Turning Point USA, hinting at deeper concerns about the political recuperation and its machinery forming around the organization's religious arm. Owens, who once shared stages and audiences with the group, has increasingly alluded to what she sees as unhealthy entanglements between spiritual authority, financial gain, political ambition, and a culture of uncritical hero worship. Though she has never accused McCoy directly, her comments about the "pastor-politician pipeline" and the "danger of merging church platforms with political mobilization" have fueled speculation about figures like him.

Best of the Web: Macron to go full "Ministry of Truth" with new censorship powers

French President Emmanuel Macron is facing fierce pushback from conservative voices within France over his renewed drive to grant the state sweeping new censorship powers, Barron's reports.

On Friday, Macron once again raised the alarm about so-called "disinformation" spreading on social media, insisting that parliament grant authorities the ability to immediately block content deemed "false information." As if the existing arsenal of censorship tools weren't enough, the left-wing president now wants to establish a "professional certification" system that would effectively create an official, state-approved class of media outlets — separating those that toe the government's ethical line from those that refuse to do so.

France's right-wing press has reacted with outrage, with Vincent Bolloré's Journal du Dimanche denouncing Macron's "totalitarian drift" on free speech and warning of "the temptation of a ministry of truth."

Flashback Best of the Web: Du Pont heir gets no prison time for raping his 3-year-old daughter, and abusing his 2-year-old son

© The (Wilmington, Del.) News Journal
Wilmington Delaware -- A judge who sentenced a wealthy du Pont heir to probation for raping his 3-year-old daughter noted in her order that he "will not fare well" in prison and needed treatment instead of time behind bars, court records show.

Superior Court Judge Jan Jurden's sentencing order for Robert H. Richards IV suggested that she considered unique circumstances when deciding his punishment for fourth-degree rape. Her observation that prison life would adversely affect Richards was a rare and puzzling rationale, several criminal justice authorities in Delaware said. Some also said her view that treatment was a better idea than prison is a justification typically used when sentencing drug addicts, not child rapists.

Richards' 2009 rape case became public this month after attorneys for his ex-wife, Tracy, filed a lawsuit seeking compensatory and punitive damages for the abuse of his daughter.

The fact that Jurden expressed concern that prison wasn't right for Richards came as a surprise to defense lawyers and prosecutors who consider her a tough sentencing judge. Several noted that prison officials can put inmates in protective custody if they are worried about their safety, noting that child abusers are sometimes targeted by other inmates.

"It's an extremely rare circumstance that prison serves the inmate well," said Delaware Public Defender Brendan J. O'Neill, whose office represents defendants who cannot afford a lawyer. "Prison is to punish, to segregate the offender from society, and the notion that prison serves people well hasn't proven to be true in most circumstances."

O'Neill said he and his deputies have often argued that a defendant was too ill or frail for prison, but he has never seen a judge cite it as a "reason not to send someone to jail."

Richards was no frail defendant, court records show, listing him at 6-feet-4 and between 250 and 276 pounds. Nor do court records cite any physical illnesses.

Comment: The Du Pont 'elite mafia' practically runs Delaware, where it's known as 'Uncle Dupey', and it funded Biden's entire 'career' as a politician.

I am confident that over 2 million people in the UK have shared thoughts on the Genocide in Gaza that are stronger than anything Natalie Strecker has expressed.

I am quite certain that I am one of those 2 million.

Yet Natalie Strecker, an avowed pacifist and mother of young children, today faces up to ten years in prison under the Terrorism Act when the verdict in her case comes in.

Strecker is charged with eliciting support for Hamas and Hezbollah, based on 8 tweets, cherry picked by police and prosecutors from an astounding 51,000 tweets she sent, mainly from the Jersey Palestine Solidarity Committee account.

Best of the Web: Putin Lays Final Word on 'Settlement' Sham in Kyrgyzstan Conference

It gets as tiring writing about the phony 'peace settlement' charade as it likely does for you reading about it. However, Putin has finally delivered the definitive word on the entire matter during a press conference on his Kyrgyzstan trip, which is worth taking note of because it answers key questions that lingered in people's minds — particularly those of the concern troll disposition.

The biggest confirmation from Putin was that Russia was not given any real 'draft treaties' but rather more an informal list of points for discussion — this appears to be what Russian figures were referring to when they said nothing of consequence was really presented to Russia:

Statements by Vladimir Putin regarding the proposed Ukraine peace plans:
  • There was no "draft peace treaty," only a set of questions they suggested discussing
  • Overall, we agree that this could serve as a basis for future arrangements
  • Every word of the peace plan on Ukraine needs to be sat down and discussed seriously
  • At present, some points of the plan sound ridiculous
  • Russia is ready to formally confirm that it has no intention of attacking Europe
  • Russian and Ukrainian intelligence services have always maintained contact; the Abu Dhabi venue is actively used for POW matters
  • The appearance of a U.S. representative at the Abu Dhabi talks was unexpected
  • U.S. representatives will come to Russia next week
  • Russia will cease hostilities only when the Ukrainian Armed Forces leave the occupied territories — or when we achieve our goals militarily

Best of the Web: FDA chief Marty Makary: Fauci involved in 'massive' COVID-19 origins cover-up

Marty Makary pod force one covid fauci coverup
© Ron Sachs – CNP for NY PostFood and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary described the alleged COVID origin cover-up by Anthony Fauci as “an American tragedy.”
The assertion was made in an interview with 'Pod Force One'

Dr. Anthony Fauci orchestrated a "massive cover-up" about the origins of COVID-19 while serving as a top public health official during the coronavirus pandemic, Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary argued on the latest episode of Pod Force One.

Makary, a former professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, explained to Pod Force One host Miranda Devine that as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID), Fauci went to great lengths to suppress the theory that COVID-19 leaked out of a research lab in China — something few in the medical community picked up on.

"One thing that's extremely obvious that very few people realize, and certainly hardly anyone in the medical establishment where I come from realized, is that [Fauci] was involved in a massive cover-up of the origins of COVID, a massive cover-up," the FDA commissioner said.

Best of the Web: Were the Brits Behind Bloomberg's Russian-US Leaks?

trump putin ukraine flag colors graphic
Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service warned earlier the same day as Bloomberg's report that the Brits are hellbent on discrediting Trump in order to undermine his latest peace efforts for resolving the conflict from which they profit.

Bloomberg shared what it claimed to be the transcripts of calls between Trump's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Putin's top foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov as well as between Ushakov and Putin's other advisor Kirill Dmitriev about the Ukrainian peace process. The gist of the Witkoff-Ushakov call was Witkoff's proposal to have Putin suggest a Gaza-like 20-point peace deal for Ukraine during an upcoming call with Trump while the Ushakov-Dmitriev one implied that the leaked draft was Russian-influenced.

Ushakov declined to comment on his talks with Witkoff but said that "Somebody tapped, somebody leaked, but not us" whereas Dmitriev flat-out described his purported call with Ushakov as "fake". For his part, Trump defended Witkoff's alleged "coaching" of Ushakov on how Putin should deal with him by reminding everyone "That's what a dealmaker does. You got to say, 'Look, they want this - you got to convince them with this.' That's a very standard form of negotiations."

Best of the Web: "Modi on board": Emails show Jeffrey Epstein central to US-India deals, "part of Israel strategy"

Records of emails and text messages reveal previously unknown details about Epstein's efforts to broker influence on Indian geopolitics and his interactions with a senior leader of Modi's party.

Jeffrey Epstein offered to set up a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Trump White House chief strategist Steve Bannon in mid-2019, less than two months before his arrest, according to a review of documents released by the U.S. House Oversight Committee. The documents, which reveal previously unknown details about the depth of Epstein's relationships with high-profile Indian political and business figures in the years prior to his death, also show Epstein corresponding about the India-Israel relationship with a powerful Indian billionaire who had entered into a joint venture with a state-owned Israeli defense firm.

Epstein had close ties with powerful figures in the Israeli intelligence establishment, and his high-level interactions on India also came at a time when the bilateral relationship between New Delhi and Tel Aviv was beginning to accelerate.

Following official state visits by Modi and Netanyahu in 2017 and 2018, in which the two signed cooperation agreements on cybersecurity, aviation, and energy, in 2019, India signed major arms deals with Tel Aviv to acquire advanced anti-tank and surface-to-air missiles. Today, India, which did not have formal ties with Israel until 1992, is the single largest customer for Israeli arms, with purchases unaffected by the genocide in the Gaza Strip.

Several years before this relationship began to publicly blossom, disclosures of his private calendars show that Epstein had several appointments with Hardeep Singh Puri, a senior leader of Modi's ruling BJP party. The appointments took place long after the financier had been convicted of sexual offenses, and while he was engaged in other global dealmaking aimed at furthering the interests of the Israeli government and private firms tied to Israel intelligence.

Hayli Gubbi volcanic eruption.
Hayli Gubbi, Ethiopia's long-dormant volcano, located in the Erta Ale Range, has erupted for the first time in 10,000 years, spewing towering ash columns that drifted across the Red Sea toward Oman and Yemen. Scientists say the eruption marks one of the most extraordinary volcanic awakenings in the region's recorded history.

The explosive eruption began around 8:30 a.m. UTC on Sunday, according to VolcanoDiscovery, citing an advisory from the Toulouse Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC). Satellite data later confirmed the presence of a massive ash cloud rising an estimated 10 - 15 km into the atmosphere.

The eruption may have been unexpected, but there were still signs. From the Smithsonian/USGS Weekly Volanic Activity Report, there was:
According to the UK Centre for Observation and Modelling of Earthquakes Volcanoes and Tectonics (COMET) response reports, explosive activity at Erta Ale (12 km NW) on 15 July was accompanied by an intrusion of magma along a dike that propagated SE towards Hayli Gubbi. Sentinel satellite imagery on 16 July showed a line of fissure vents that produced lava flows outside the S caldera of Erta Ale (6 km S of the northern pit craters). Another group of four fissure vents opened further along the rift to the SE, with the most distant only 2 km from the Hayli Gubbi crater. No lava lakes were seen in the pit craters after 18 July, but satellite data indicated uplift in the region during 21 July-3 August, and an anomalous white cloud within Hayli Gubbi's crater was observed on 25 July. Satellite data showed that the white plume covered the crater floor in most of the images (several per month) at least through 18 November.
