Plan 9 from outer space; US feared alien invasion more than Soviet attack

In January 1979, The New York Times reported that despite repeated, feverish denials, the CIA had indeed investigated the UFO phenomenon: "CIA Papers Detail UFO Surveillance" screamed the headline. The report is said to have so upset the then CIA director, Stansfield Turner, that he reportedly asked his staff: "Are we in UFOs?"

The answer was yes - since the late 1940s, apparently. But exactly how, what, when, why and who remained layered in mystery, leaving grist for the conspiracy mill.

But this year a raft of newly unclassified CIA documents revealed that the remote possibility of alien invasion elicited greater fear than the threat of a Soviet nuclear attack.

More interesting still, the CIA documents show that despite decades of repeated public denials, behind the scenes there raged a series of inter-agency feuds that involved the highest levels of the US government.

Comment: Interesting that this report comes on the heals of SOTT's podcast with Richard Dolan, author of UFOs and the National Security State.

Flashback Questions over base's role in probing UFOs

The Ministry of Defence has side-stepped claims that a West Wales RAF base plays a secret role probing UFOs.

Gower MP Martin Caton has been pressing the Government over activities at the base at Brawdy, Pembrokeshire, in a series of Commons questions.

He quizzed the MoD over whether RAF Brawdy was used to investigate unidentified flying objects.

The MP also asked whether it still used an underwater sound surveillance system set up to listen for hostile submarines.

Suspicions about the base have surfaced as an international panel of scientists called for a full-scale investigation into sightings.

Flashback UK: Black Triangular Shape over M4

A Swansea woman claims to have seen a UFO as she drove along the M4 in daylight last Saturday afternoon.

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, says she saw a black triangular shaped object looming above her as she made her way westbound towards the Severn Bridge at around 3.15pm.

Neil Spring, Swansea branch officer at the Swansea Office for Global UFO Investigation Systems, said he had contacted RAF bases to see if they were testing aircraft but they revealed they had nothing recorded on radar. He said: "I am very excited about this sighting. Reports of this type of unidentified flying triangular shaped craft have increased throughout the world.

Note: The following was written in late 1994. Much information has come to light since then as a result of our ongoing research. We would suggest that the reader might like to read our Timeline of Secret Government Research as well as our discussion of Cosmic COINTELPRO for a more complete (though still in process!) information base. This additional information may put a different light on the "mode" of the phenomenon in the present day, though the origins remain the same.

Kucinich tells debate audience: I saw a UFO

Dennis Kucinich's presidential campaign is hardly being taken seriously by the major media in this country, and that fact was on full display Tuesday night when NBC's Tim Russert took time from the Democratic candidates' debate to ask Kucinich's views on little green men.

Kentucky, U.S.: Spooky sighting, flaming sphere a mystery, so far

Supernatural phenomena were never more than a passing interest for Sylvester and Cheryl King of southern Hardin County.

"You see things on television and you wonder, 'Could this stuff really happen?' " said Sylvester. "Some of the stories are almost impossible to believe. Now, mine's more bizarre than theirs."

SOTT Focus: 94% - Signs of the Times Halloween Special

(xylitol) Candy for everyone!
Even though this Hallowe'en special article was published in 2005, it is even more true today. And, with the recent publication of Naomi Klein's "Shock Doctrine" and Martha Stout's "The Paranoia Switch", the general public is now able to see even more of the "man behind the curtain" that Laura Knight-Jadczyk has been speaking and writing about for over 20 years. It doesn't have to be Hallowe'en to be scary anymore.

Last Hallowe'en I was left here at Signs Central to hold down the fort and produce the Hallowe'en Signs page by myself. That page has become a classic and I received a pile of emails from readers about it. What can I say? It was one of those golden moments in journalism where all the pieces were right to hand, and all I had to do was relax into the flow and write.

This Hallowe'en the Signs Team have asked me if I would write again and I am hard-pressed to think of anything that can top last Hallowe'en's page. However, Hallowe'en Weirdness (as it is wont to do) has certainly begun to weave its spell around the events of the last couple of weeks and maybe - just maybe - I have some Hallowe'en Candy for everyone!

Close encounters of the Turkish kind

Fethiye, Turkey - The alleged sighting of an unidentified flying object (UFO) has excited the Turkish media with pictures appearing in both sensationalistic tabloids and more serious broadsheet papers last week.

The UFO was spotted in the Karakopru area of Sanliurfa province towards 4am on Wednesday. Filmed by an amateur videographer, the strangely glowing hexagonal ball of light hovered in the sky emitting red, green and white lights and moved both fast and erratically. After 15 minutes it disappeared without a trace.

As of yet no official explanation has been offered as to what it might be, although Internet comments vary between lauding a genuine sighting of a "green fireball" phenomenon and skeptics who claim the object is just a star filmed under magnification or others who believe that it was an American spy plane monitoring Turkey's border with Syria.

Pennsylvania hunter takes picture of 'Big Foot'

Ridgway, Pennsylvania - It's furry and walks on all fours. Beyond that, about the only thing certain about the critter photographed by a hunter's camera is that some people have gotten the notion it could be a Sasquatch, or bigfoot. Others say it's just a bear with a bad skin infection.

Comment: That surely was a strange looking, long-legged, skin-infected, thin and deformed bear!

Canada: Ex-defence minister joins search for aliens

A new group is pushing for full disclosure about extra-terrestrials, and they've enlisted a former Canadian cabinet minister to help make their case

"I have no intention of convincing anybody of anything," said Viggiani, 59, director of media relations for Exopolitics Toronto, a non-profit educational group pushing for full disclosure of the truth about off-world beings.

"What I do is point them to the evidence."

Exopolitics is a field of study that has moved far beyond the question of whether we are alone in the universe. Its supporters believe there is enough evidence out there that they can state as fact that a) intelligent, sentient, ethical extra-terrestrials exist; b) they have made contact; and c) they probably have light years of lessons to teach us about sustainable energy sources and countless other matters of global importance.

Comment: There's a sinister reason governments haven't been forthcoming with the "ET" presence. And they aren't here to help us - otherwise we wouldn't be in the mess we're in. Listen to Richard Dolan, author of UFOs and the National Security State.
