6.1 magnitude earthquake strikes eastern Japan

bbbbbbbb
A strong earthquake of 6.1 magnitude shook Japan's Minamisoma region on Thursday, according to the US Geological Survey.

The tremor occurred 83 kilometers (51 miles) east of Minami-Soma in the province of Fukushima at a depth of 40 kilometers, the agency said, with no tsunami warning issued.

There was no report of any damage.

According to Japanese media, the quake was felt in Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima provinces at 12.16 p.m. local time (0316GMT), with no abnormalities confirmed at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

This came after a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off Taiwan's eastern coast on Wednesday, killing at least nine people, while hundreds others were injured.

The quake was the strongest to have hit the island nation in 25 years. In 1999, around 2,400 people were killed when a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan in the middle of the night.

Homes and businesses were damaged, several people were injured and tens of thousands remained in the dark Wednesday after a powerful storm system spawned tornadoes and damaging storms from the South to the Ohio Valley, and blizzard conditions and snow in the Great Lakes.

Severe storms injured at least 10 people in Jeffersonville, Indiana, just north of Louisville, the town's mayor told CNN affiliate WLKY. Photos posted by the mayor showed chunks taken out of several homes' roofs and debris strewn about an area neighborhood.

Severe thunderstorms brought "flooding, downed trees, power outages, and road blockages" across West Virginia, according to Gov. Jim Justice, who declared a state of emergency Tuesday for Fayette, Kanawha, Lincoln and Nicholas counties.

At least 13 homes were damaged and some residents were injured, Fayette County, West Virginia, Office of Emergency Management director Kevin Walker told CNN. The injuries were non-life threatening, Walker said.

"Some are destroyed, and some have major damage," Walker said.

The two dogs were seized by animal control peace officers.

"The dogs reportedly belong to a person who lives at the residence where the child was visiting," police spokeswoman Cheryl Vourdenhout said in the release.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

Easter processions in southern Spain have been cancelled after heavy rain from Storm Nelson, as the country was hit by strong winds and four people drowned on its storm-battered coasts.

All of the big processions in Seville on Holy Thursday were cancelled because of the rainstorms that were otherwise welcome in a region that has been experiencing a severe drought.

The processions of the Nazarenes, famous for their purple, pointed hoods, were also cancelled in Huelva and Cádiz.
