Back during the early days of the Bush-Cheney administration, countless articles and even official statements by the International Energy Agency and various governments proclaimed the onset of what was termed Peak Oil. This was a time when former Halliburton CEO, Vice President Dick Cheney, was named to head the White House Energy Task Force. In the run up to the March 2003 war on Iraq, peak oil or absolute decline in world oil reserves seemed a plausible explanation, if not justification, for the G.W. Bush invasion of Iraq. This author was also for a time persuaded that could explain the oil war. Yet, today we hear little about peak oil. Why, is interesting.

Peak Oil was and is an invention of certain financial circles along with Big Oil to justify among other things ultra-high prices for their oil. The peak oil theory they promoted to justify the high prices, hearkened back to the 1950's and an eccentric oil geologist with Shell Oil in Houston named King Hubbard.

Desperate for a scapegoat: UK & UN authorities blame social media for explosion of migrants attempting to cross English Channel

UN and UK authorities are blaming social media for enabling illegal migration into Europe, claiming companies are not doing enough to crack down on smuggling activity even as charities claim they are focusing on the wrong problem.

An explosion in migrants attempting to illegally reach the UK by crossing the English Channel in small boats has European and UN authorities scrambling for someone to blame. UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid declared the crossings a "major incident" and was forced to curtail his South African holiday to consult his French counterpart on how to address the issue before it spirals out of control.

With more than 221 migrants attempting the crossing since the beginning of November and almost 100 of those since Christmas, the fear is migrants will begin dying at sea in the north as they have in the Mediterranean, where more than 17,700 people have perished trying to cross into Europe in the past four years. Many of the migrants who have washed up on UK shores have been suffering from hypothermia.

'Caught in the act of spying': US citizen apprehended in Moscow ahead of New Year's Eve celebrations

An American citizen was apprehended during a "spying action" in Moscow, the Federal Security Service (FSB) said. He is currently being detained on suspicion of espionage.

FSB agents detained a US national named Paul Whelan on Friday during "a spying action," the agency's press office told TASS.

Criminal proceedings were launched against the man under Article 276 of the Russian Criminal Code, which covers the crime of espionage.

No details of the suspect's identity or facts surrounding the operation were immediately disclosed.

A new video recording of a transgender woman exploding on a GameStop employee is emerged out of Albuquerque, New Mexico late Friday evening that is raising eyebrows on Twitter where it gathered viral attention.

According to early reports, a customer by the name of Tom Smith took the video, but Townhall has been unable to make contact with the man or confirm that claim.

30 Russian children born to ISIS parents and held in Iraqi jail return home

A plane carrying 30 Russian children, some as young as three years old, who had been kept in a Baghdad prison together with their Islamic State-linked mothers, has landed in Moscow.

Flying from Baghdad to Moscow were 16 girls and 14 boys, who are now undergoing medical checks at Moscow's Center for Children's Health. Twenty-four of these children come from the Republic of Dagestan and three are from the Chechen Republic, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov wrote on his Telegram channel. The other three minors are from the Penza Region and from Moscow.

The high-profile operation is a breakthrough in the dramatic story of the children of Russian nationals who went to Iraq and Syria to join the ranks of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorists. RT first put the issue under the spotlight by starting the Bring Them Home campaign, which helped relatives of children kept in a Baghdad orphanage recognize them from footage and then safely deliver them to their homes.

Female theologians publish "women's bible" to counter claims the Holy Book is sexist in the age of #MeToo

A group of Protestant and Catholic feminist theologians have released A Woman's Bible arguing that the Holy Book is not misogynistic but a tool for female emancipation.

Sparked by the Harvey Weinstein scandal, the #MeToo movement has sent shockwaves around the world about sexual abuse around the world at home and in the workplace.

Many feminists have accused The Bible, Christianity and religion in general of bolstering a sexist view of society that casts women as subservient. They argue that the female figures in translations and interpretations of Bible texts are all prostitutes servants or saints, whose most positive roles are seducing a monarch or kissing Jesus' feet.

But authors of Une bible des femmes ("A women's bible"), published in October, say that view is often down to a misinterpretation of the Holy Book by patriarchs and sexists.

A jetway collapsed at Baltimore-Washington International (BWI) Airport in Maryland, leaving at least six people injured, according to multiple reports.

Multiple emergency services personnel responded to the scene, transporting at least six people to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Airport officials tweeted that the reported partial collapse was due to an "equipment failure involving a jet bridge" at Gate E-10:

Yes, we know, world events - like SOTT editors - don't do 'holidays'. Just as there's 'no rest for the wicked', those paying attention to an increasingly crazy world don't catch much of a 'break'. The global descent into chaos, division and polarization taxes us all with feelings of doom and gloom and a sense that there's nothing to be grateful for.

But if we reflect honestly, and refocus our priorities for a moment, we realize that there is always something to be grateful for. Be it close family and friends with whom we can enjoy respite from the lies and corruption, or just the knowledge that, no matter how hard the destructive forces try, they will never erase truth and love from this world as long as we keep it alive in our own hearts.

We at SOTT are proud of what we've been able to accomplish this year, not just on the English-language website Sott.net, but right across our multi-lingual media platform, and we are ever-mindful that it would not be possible without the contributions, feedback and messages of support from our readers and supporters. The past 12 months have proved to be a boon for marijuana legalization advocates around the world, and the trend is only expected to continue in 2019.

Canada became the first industrialized nation, and the second country in the world after Uruguay, to legalize and regulate recreational marijuana in October. In the United States, Michigan and Vermont joined eight other states and the nation's capital, Washington, D.C., that had already legalized recreational cannabis, although it remains prohibited under federal law.

Top courts in South Africa and the country of Georgia also struck down prohibitions on cannabis, legalizing the plant for individual use. Similarly, Mexico's supreme court ruled for the fifth time that prohibitions on pot are unconstitutional. When it comes to medicinal cannabis, Sri Lanka, Thailand and the United Kingdom approved the use of the plant in 2018.

Other countries around the world are closely eyeing the decisions of these countries and exploring whether they should make similar adjustments to their narcotics laws. As legal Canadian and U.S. weed companies see soaring profits and investment, many governments are noting the plant's lucrative potential. The "Support Tunnels Under Trumps Wall" campaign has managed to raise more than $3,400.

A fundraising page has been set up to provide shovels to anyone who wants to dig a tunnel underneath Donald Trump's proposed border wall.

The tongue-in-cheek campaign is hoping to raise $150 million to help people crawl underneath the wall which the president hopes to build across the U.S./Mexico border.

The GoFundMe page has been set up in response to the huge popular "We The People Will Fund the Wall" campaign crowdfunding page, which has raised more than $18 million.

"To the thousands of people raising money for a wall.....I'm raising money to supply tunnel builders with shovels," wrote Rigo Torres, the creator of the GoFundMe page.
