Coronavirus death toll in Italy jumps to 631 from 463 in a day, 10,000+ cases throughout the country, plus other COVID-19 updates

Another 168 people in Italy have died of the COVID-19 coronavirus, bringing the death toll to 631, while the total number of cases rose by over ten percent to 10,149. The entire country is locked down in quarantine.

Tuesday's jump in the deaths, from the previous record of 463, represents a 36 percent rise and the largest in absolute numbers since the infection was first noticed on February 21, the Civil Protection Agency said.

Some 877 patients were in intensive care, up from 733 on Monday. The number of patients who recovered has also risen, however, and stood at 1,004 on Tuesday as opposed to 724 the day before.

The rising numbers come on the day the nation-wide quarantine imposed by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte went into effect, closing off Italy's borders. All public gatherings, including sporting events, have been banned and civilian movement has been restricted. Schools and universities have been shuttered through April 3.

The novel coronavirus, dubbed COVID-19, first appeared in Wuhan, China at the end of 2019. Most of the fatalities worldwide have been in China so far, but Italy and South Korea have been the next hardest-hit. The virus causes severe pneumonia that can be lethal to the elderly and people with underlying medical conditions.

Comment: Spain's parliament has been suspended for at least one week after a lawmaker tested positive. Israel has introduced mandatory quarantine for all visitors coming from abroad. Saudi Arabia will impose a $133k fine on any visitor providing inaccurate health or travel history disclosures. Iran's leader Khamenei cancelled his traditional New Year's speech in Mashhad. Iraqi authorities have closed the holy city of Najaf. And while cases are exploding in Iran and Italy, China continues to see their own numbers going down - all temporary hospitals in Wuhan have now been shut down. (See more updates and stats here.)

For an idea of what Italian hospitals and doctors are going experiencing, here are some accounts. The biggest issue is that the hospitals are not equipped for the number of serious cases requiring intensive care. Doctors are having to choose who gets a spot in the ICU, and who doesn't. These are cases over and above their regular workload. So while numbers in absolute terms are not yet very high - hospitals are already working at or above their capacity to treat serious cases coming in. If China could reverse the exponential spread of its own cases, other countries should be able to do the same. In the meantime, the medical system will be struggling to keep up in countries where that has yet to happen and spread of cases is still growing exponentially.

Probably Italians eating totally useless tomato products as the human body only endures tomato, but cannot process it, cannot create any nutrients from it. All that PASTA = deadly carbs that go with junk tomato have surely turned on the bad genes responsible for making these Modern-Romans more vulnerable.

Look at all the Italian famous foods: Italians are world-leaders in eating immune-system-weakening JUNK!!

Deadly Pizza, killer Bottarga, crazy dangerous Lasagna! Look at their Ribbolita = "this vegetable soup is thickened with KILLER bread instead of meat". Then their Polenta = DEADLY GRAIN, Risotto = deadly starch, Carbonara = heap of carbs again, Focaccia = KILLER BREAD, Arancini & Supplì = again rice & cheese bad combination , apart from the weakly nutritious chicken.

Gelato = deadly ice-cream, Tiramisu = again deadly carbs.

No wonder the Roman Empire crumbled during the Plagues, Romans dropping like flies as a result of their deadly grain-based diet making them very susceptible to viruses. Only they can thank their traditions for their repeated FATE.

While the barbarians survived in surprising numbers, thanks to their mainly meat & animal fat based diet.

First of all I am flabbergasted at the sensationalist title , I would assume at SOTT you would know that you do not die for the virus. People who are dying are older people in their 80, yes like 80, at least the 60% and are dying because they had already 3 or 4 conditions which got aggravated by the flu. Plus 600 deaths from a flu is next to nothing, flu kills by the thousand every year but it is not propagandised , so nobody freaks the hell out. In 2017-18 just in the US 80000 people died from the complication of flu, like eighty thousand, only in the US. To be part of this fear and economical propaganda is very saddening. In march 23 2019 China and Italy agreed on an financial accord to lift fees of customs and the likes...everyone was opposing , especially the US. Now strangely enough they are the only two countries really paying the price of this BS. How in hell can a virus travels miles and miles and miles from China and infect ony the NORTH of Italy (which is the financial motor of italy btw)???? The aggravations of the respiratory system is happening, various dr are saying actually screaming, and they are about to take action, is happening ecause people paniking at the fear propaganda are taking too much aspirins and likes wich as side effects have "respiratoty complications" and people have been abusing them.

And to finish, I don t know if I should even bother to answer the utter ignorant comment of this Lilies, which obviously hasn t spent a day in Italy;

dear Lilies the only one who expressing utter ignorance is you! If you think the italian main foods is pizza and gelato darling you obvioulsy not only never been to Italy but you do not ever travel. Italy is the country with the largest variety of veggies and fruiits, plus the antioxidant and miracolous olive oil. Italians eat great amount of vegetables with every meal, We have vegetarian dishes, especially in the south, that anyother country on the planet, including India and Thailand (places where I lived for months) can dream of. Gelato for us, I don t know you, it is not "food" is is a treat, a dessert...we do not ingest only sugar unlike most of americans for example ( i lived in California for 17 years) or even the British ( I lived in London for 7 years) Pizza also is something we eat as a special occasion when we go out at times...it is not our daily meal. Pasta is eaten but always with veggies or meat. We eat tons of great fish , salad and NOT not only tomato, it would be pretty boring and limiting to our very creative a incredibly rich of recipies cuisine. So before shooting BS like if you were holding the truth, do your research properly

For articles like the above one, we're just mirroring what the media is reporting so that we have a record of it for posterity. Especially for when they all start rewriting history and saying they knew all along that it was just another round of flu.

Our actual take on the 'Coronavirus outbreak' is that it's a nothing-burger.

During such times, like now especially, how do you score my decision not to travel ever? :D You are right: I simply put "famous Italian foods" into internet search and commented on the "16 Top foods list" that I found. Don't you think - as you state about your country's dietary customs, that its a little bit strange the reports coming out of Italy about dramatic jumps in Corona mortality rate?
