Image
Dazzling green fireball filmed above Belgium, January 2014
Mysterious booms across the US, often occuring in and around earthquakes - A series of unusual earthquakes in Australia - More 'strange sky sounds' - More meteor fireballs raining down - Massive sinkholes swallowing houses, cars and people - Storm after storm battering the UK and Western Europe, bringing massive waves, widespread flooding and landslides - Mass whale stranding in New Zealand - Polar Vortex (twice!) freezing most of the US in ice age conditions and making it colder than Mars - Major flooding in Florida, while hurricane-force winds smash into Oregon and the Carolinas - Tonga flattened by most powerful cyclone to hit the region half a century - A strong earthquake hit Puerto Rico - 100,000 people affected by major flooding in the Philippines, while another 40,000 were displaced by heavy rainfall in Indonesia - Bats falling out of the sky as wildfires rage in Australia's record heatwave - 'Winter wildfires' raging across snow-covered US - An eerily quiet Sun that hasn't been seen since the 17th Century - Several volcanic eruptions in Indonesia causing multiple deaths and the evacuation of thousands - Another strong earthquake in New Zealand - More mass animal deaths, including a whole pod of pilot whales off the coast of Florida - Record-breaking snowfall across the US...

2014 has stated with a bang, literally, with a surge of loud booms being heard and felt throughout much of North America. But then again, didn't the last few years start this way? This video includes strange and extreme weather, geological and cosmic events, covering most of the month of January. Things aren't looking good for certain few heavily populated areas...

Georgia man rushes to save wife from 8-foot sinkhole

Image
A Georgia man ran to the rescue after his wife fell into a sinkhole that opened up near the front door of their home.

Aaron Kent, of Atlanta, said his wife, who is 74, was leaving for work Wednesday morning when she stepped outside and plunged into the sinkhole, which he estimated to be 8 feet deep and 12 feet wide.

By himself, Kent managed to pull her out. She only suffered minor injuries, according to MyFoxAtlanta.com.

"I think it scared her more than... anything else" he told the station.

Watershed management officials said the sinkhole opened up overnight because of a faulty storm water line installed underneath the house, perhaps decades ago, that washed away the soil.

30 foot-deep sinkhole swallows car overnight in High Wycombe, England

Image
A family has been evacuated from their home after a sinkhole opened up in their driveway and swallowed their car

Ever had that sinking feeling when you open the front door in the morning and wonder where you left the car?

Did you leave it on the road, park it in the garage... or has somebody stolen it?

The last thing you'd probably think of is that it might have been swallowed up by the ground

But that's exactly what happened to 19-year-old Zoe Smith, whose Volkswagen Lupo fell down a 30ft-deep sinkhole in the night.

Now the car, which she relies on to get to work, is a write-off, lying at the bottom of the pit, which stretches 15ft across the family's driveway - to within inches of the house itself.

Miss Smith's stepfather Phil Conran, said: 'We hadn't heard anything at all. There was no indication whatsoever.

High school student crashes car on ice-covered road in Cherokee County, Georgia, before watching it be swallowed up by giant sinkhole

Image
While many motorists were stranded on Georgia's roads and highways Tuesday night, one young man may have had the scariest commute of all.

A Woodstock High School student driving home from school shortly before 1 p.m. lost control of his car on an icy part of Towne Lake Parkway.

The 1995 Mercedes-Benz C280 slid down a hill, jumped a curb and hit a fire hydrant, which began to spew water.

The driver, Alec Monroe, managed to get out of the car before a sinkhole formed. Within half an hour, the Mercedes was submerged.

Monroe said his mother's credit card, all his school supplies and his winter jacket were inside the car. Thankfully, he was not hurt.

  • Drone captures dramatic effects of rockfall in Northern Italy
  • 4,000 cubic metres of rock crash into 300-year-old building
Amazing drone footage has captured the trail of destruction left by a rockfall in northern Italy.

Approximately 4,000 cubic metres of rock broke off a cliff face and then crashed through a barn and vineyards in Tramin on January 21.

One giant rock rolled through a 300-year-old barn destroying it completely before coming to an eventual stop in a field near a second boulder, which seems to have been dislodged in a previous rockslide.

The hole was discovered outside a house in Holiday, Florida on Sunday morning.

Local fire authorities evacuated the elderly resident of the house, as well as neighbours as a precaution.

Pasco County Fire and Rescue officials said the hole is 20 feet wide and 15 feet deep and does not appear to be growing.

This incident is the latest in a series of sinkholes to open up in Florida. Last year houses were evacuated in Dunedin after a hole opened up in November, and near the same location a man was killed in February when a chasm opened in his bedroom.
