Late-season storm brings more snow to the Sierra Nevada

The winter that wouldn't quit showed up again in the Sierra Nevada region of California and Nevada on Tuesday.

The fast-moving, blustery storm wasn't expected to last long, but it was enough to require chain controls on some trans-Sierra highways and add to staggering snowfall totals left by an exceptional series of winter storms.

"A blast back to some wintry weather today with wind and snowfall," the Mammoth Mountain ski resort wrote on its web page. The early morning temperature was just 18 degrees (-8 Celsius).

It has been a winter to remember, especially in the western United States. California and Utah saw huge snowfall totals. All these resorts are raising a banner for record snowfall during the 2022/23 season.

The list is in ascending order based on total snowfall. All snow totals are from April 15, 2023, meaning they could still add to their already impressive records.

Palisades Tahoe resort in California breaks all-time snowfall record with 710 inches of snow

Palisades Tahoe has had the most iconic year yet, unveiling the Base to Base Gondola, opening the new high-speed six-pack Red Dog Chair, hosting the Stifel Palisades Tahoe Cup, and now Mother Nature has gifted Palisades Tahoe with the most snowfall since the turn of the millennium, breaking the previously held record of the 2016-2017 season.

With last night's snowfall of 10 inches, the previously held record of 707 inches of snowfall for the 2016-2017 season has been broken as Palisades Tahoe is now sitting at 710 inches of snow, which is 178% of its average season snowfall of 400 inches.

Late season winter storm drops up to 22 inches of snow in parts of Wisconsin

A late season winter storm dropped more than a foot of snow in some parts of Wisconsin Sunday night into Monday morning. The latest accumulation leaves the Twin Ports area of Duluth and Superior just short of an all-time record.

The latest system created a wide range of snow totals with southeastern Wisconsin seeing 1 to 3 inches and between 5 and 19 inches in the far western and north-central parts of the state.

The Town of Northfield in Jackson County reported 22 inches of new snow. Black River Falls, slightly southeast of Northfield, reported 19.5 inches as of 8:48 a.m.

15 road sections shut after April snowstorm in Kazakhstan

Authorities were forced to close 15 road sections as snow and snowstorms grab Kazakhstan.

Over 500 units of equipment continue plowing the roads.

As earlier reported, the 0-11 grades of all secondary schools, students of the colleges of Astana switched to online learning today due to heavy snowfall.

Snowmobiler dead after being caught in avalanche near Invermere, British Columbia - 14th fatality for the province since January

One person is dead after being caught in an avalanche in B.C. on Saturday while snowmobiling west of the Alberta border, according to Avalanche Canada.

The organization said on its website that three people were snowmobiling in the Thunderwater Lake riding area, which is west of Invermere in B.C.'s Columbia Valley, about 180 kilometres west of Calgary.

Avalanche Canada said two riders were swept up in a slide that was triggered near a rocky feature on the slope.

"One rider managed to ride off to the side, the other was caught and buried approximately two metres deep on a bench feature mid-path," said the posting.

Major April snowfall in the Alps - 40 inches of snow in 5 days

Some ski areas have reported snowfall totals of up to a metre (40") on their higher slopes above 2,500m, and particularly above 3,000m, in the Alps over the last five days.

The cold, snowy weather has led skiers and boarders in the mountains at present to compare mid-April to mid-Spring.

About 80% of ski areas in the Alps have already ended their 22-23 seasons however and more will close from Monday.

Italy: 3 killed after avalanche near French border

The men were taking a mountain guide course in the Aosta Valley when the avalanche swept them away. The course leader survived the avalanche, alerting emergency services after descending to the valley.

A mountain rescue team recovered on Friday the bodies of three Italian skiers, after they were caught the day before in an avalanche in the border area between France and Italy. while training to be Alpine guides.

The National Alpine Rescue Corps resumed their search for the missing men, having suspended it on Thursday due to poor weather conditions.

The bodies of the men were taken to Aosta for formal identification.

An avalanche in northwestern B.C. killed one heliskier and left three others injured Tuesday afternoon (April 11).

A group of five was touring around a remote mountain lodge about 150 kilometres north of Stewart when they were caught in the slide, Last Frontier Heliskiing said in a statement. Three of them were injured and one died.

BC Emergency Health Services said it responded with three ambulance crews to the area at 3:37 p.m. and took one person to hospital via air ambulance. It didn't comment on the condition of any of the other skiers.

Giant avalanche kills 3 sherpa climbers on Mount Everest, Nepal

There's been a disaster on the world's tallest peak.

Three Sherpa climbers were navigating the Khumbu Icefall on Mount Everest when a serac on the glacier above them collapsed. According to reports in The Himalayan Times and the website Everest Chronicle, the three Sherpas climbers were buried by the avalanche on Wednesday morning and were reported missing after a series of snowstorms in the region had created unstable snow conditions.
