Greece has been in the grip of a wet weather front named Elena since Christmas, causing traffic disruptions and flooding across the country, authorities said Thursday.

In Athens, many northern and southern suburbs residents woke up on Thursday to heavy rainfall, which flooded dozens of houses and swept away cars. The Fire Brigade received at least 40 telephone calls to pump out water and remove fallen trees from roads.

Elena delivered the heaviest rainfall in Attica's mountainous areas of Vilia and Penteli, far from the severe flooding experienced in the southern suburbs. The worst-hit areas included the port region of Piraeus and nearby Alimos.

The Peace and Friendship Stadium in the southern seaside area of the Greek capital near Piraeus Port was also flooded, and authorities are still assessing the damage, Xinhua news agency reported.

Tiger kills woman in Chandrapur, India - 27th such incident for the district in 2024

nnnnnnn
A 60-year-old woman was mauled to death by a tiger while she was working in her field near the forested area of Kavitpeth in the Virur forest range on Monday afternoon. This is the 29th fatality in wild animal attacks in Chandrapur district this year, with most incidents involving tigers.
According to forest officials, the attack occurred around 4.30pm. Vatsalabai and other farmers were reportedly warned by patrolling teams about recent tiger sightings in the area. While others chose to leave immediately, she allegedly continued working in her field. Within half an hour, the tiger attacked and killed her.

Forest department's personnel patrolling nearby rushed to the scene and confirmed the attack. By evening, camera traps were installed in the vicinity to monitor tiger movements, and patrolling was intensified to prevent further incidents.

"We had issued alerts to villagers about the tiger's presence and advised them to avoid working in the fields near the forest," said a forest official.

Stray dogs kill 6-year-old girl and 81-year-old woman in 2 separate attacks in India

MMMMMMMM
A six-year-old girl, Chandini Harijan, was tragically killed by a pack of stray dogs in Phupgaon village, Koraput district, while visiting her grandparents. The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon as Chandini and her elder brother played in a nearby field.

At least five dogs attacked Chandini, dragging her away. Her brother tried to intervene but was overwhelmed and fled to seek help. Villagers rushed to the scene, finding Chandini severely injured. Despite efforts to save her, she was declared dead at Kumuli Medical Center.

This tragedy has left the village devastated and reignited concerns about stray dog attacks in Odisha. In November, an elderly woman in Balasore district was also killed by stray dogs.

Odisha has reported over 500,000 dog bite cases in the past two years, with 1.7 million stray dogs across the state. Authorities have been criticized for failing to address this growing menace, which has caused widespread fear and outrage among residents.

The state government is under increasing pressure to implement effective measures to control the stray dog population and prevent further tragedies.

Comment: In the state of Kerala on the same day according to the Hindustan Times:
An 81-year-old woman, who was bitten by a stray dog attack in Alappuzha district, Kerala, died on Tuesday, police said.

The deceased was identified as Karthiyayini, a resident of Thakazhi, who had come to visit her son's home in Arattupuzha.

"The elderly woman was attacked by a few stray dogs inside the compound of a home around 4 pm. The neighbours rushed the bleeding woman to the Vandanam Government Medical College but she was declared brought dead," a police officer said.

N Sajeevan, panchayat president, said Karthyayini was resting on a cot in the front yard of her son's home when the stray dogs reportedly jumped over a plastic fence and attacked her.

"It is not clear how many dogs were there, but she sustained several injuries. The area near the house is known for the presence of a large pack of dogs. The incident took place when no one was at home. Her son and daughter-in-law were outside. Neighbours who heard her cries for help rushed her to the government hospital, but she could not be saved," he said.

"This is the first time in the area where stray dogs have entered a compound and attacked someone. She might have had food in her hands thereby attracting the dogs," he said.

The remains will be handed over to the family following autopsy, police said.
