Flooded homes, streets as another storm hits battered central Greece

Torrential rain battered central Greece, flooding streets, homes and businesses in the port city of Volos and on the island of Evia, just three weeks after devastating Storm Daniel killed 16 people in the wider region.

A private helicopter crashed into the sea in northern Evia, east of the Greek capital Athens, and a search and rescue operation was underway.

It was not immediately clear what caused the accident.

"The private helicopter, an A-109 type, was en route to Volos city with at least one person on board," a civil aviation official told Reuters.

More than 250 people have been evacuated from the area since Storm Elias struck on Wednesday afternoon, the fire brigade said on Thursday, adding that it had so far received 1,200 calls for help.

The storm hit Volos with rain so heavy that water levels in the city and its suburbs rose rapidly in a few hours. A nearby stream overflowed, adding to the flooding.

15-meter whale found dead on beach in Colonia, Uruguay

Uruguayan authorities reported Wednesday the discovery of a dead 15-meter whale on the River Plate beach of Colonia, believed to be the first such discovery in the past 100 years.

The mammal, found Tuesday, appears to have been dead for days and is believed to have succumbed to heavy rains.

The owner of the Kerayvoty reserve, Julio Medina, said that help would be sought from the National Directorate of Aquatic Resources (Dinara). He also noted that the animal appeared to be a blue whale.

A record-breaking number of "uber-rare" North American songbirds have arrived in the UK this week, blown over the Atlantic in the aftermath of Hurricane Lee.

More than a dozen species of small songbirds - one of which has never been seen in the UK before - were sent veering off their usual migration routes by the high winds.

It was "the largest such arrival ever recorded in the British Isles", said Dr Alexander Lees, a reader at Manchester Metropolitan University and the chair of the British Ornithologists' Union Records Committee.

"One species hasn't been seen before, and several have only been recorded once or twice."

With Red-eyed Vireos being found in Cornwall, Scilly, Devon, and Barra, and an American Buff-bellied Pipit on St.Kilda, it would be pretty amazing if another gem isn't discovered soon.

Woman found dead in suspected dog attack in Toledo, Ohio

A 70-year-old woman was found dead from a suspected dog bite Tuesday in West Toledo, police said.

When responders arrived, the woman was found in her backyard with injuries that were possibly caused by her dog, which was near her in the backyard.

Toledo Fire and Rescue units were able to move the dog away from the woman and render aid, police said.

The woman, who suffered "significant injuries," was pronounced dead at the scene in the 4200 block of Grantley Road.

Dozens displaced after massive sinkhole opens near apartment complex in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania

Authorities say a huge sinkhole in northeast Pennsylvania has forced nearly two-dozen people from their homes.

The ground gave way over the weekend next to an apartment complex in Luzerne County.

The fire chief said 14 of the apartments have been condemned, causing roughly 20 people to be displaced.

The department of environmental protection says the hole is about 60 to 80 feet deep.

It is believed the sinkhole was likely caused by a mine subsidence which is a technique used in underground mining and can result in the ground above sinking or in this case, develop into a large sinkhole.

A large sinkhole is creating a mess in a Long Island backyard, and those who live at the home said it sprung up out of nowhere — leading them to question what caused it to form.

Tiffany McFadzean couldn't believe her eyes when she looked out into the backyard of her West Hempstead home Tuesday morning.

"We saw this big huge hole it caught us off guard," she said.

The sinkhole measures about six feet deep and 10 feet across, and appeared suddenly with zero warning.

Lightning strike claims 3 lives in Odisha, India

In a tragic incident, a lightning strike killed three women from one family in Chitamunda village, under the Dharamgarh block, on Tuesday. The deceased were identified as Gainti Limgachia, her daughter-in-law Rupi, and her granddaughter Lata. The incident occurred when the trio was working in their farm field when sudden rain, accompanied by thunder, struck, killing them on the spot.

"Police reached the spot and sent the bodies for postmortem," said Dharamgarh SDPO Dhiraj Chopdar.

In a similar incident in Koraput and Jeypore, a lightning strike claimed the life of a minor girl from Chargaon village, in Borigumma. The deceased is Ambika Harijan (14). The incident took place while Ambika was alone in her thatched house when lightning struck, resulting in her immediate death and partial damage to the house.

Sources said that the lightning activities, which lasted for half an hour, affected electric conductors, household appliances, and thatched houses in various urban and rural areas of the two towns.

Lightning strikes claim 10 lives in 24 hours in Bihar, India

At least 10 people were killed due to lightning strikes in the last 24 hours as thundershowers lashed several districts in the state. The Patna Meteorological Centre has issued a warning for such thundershowers in south Bihar on Tuesday as well.

A yellow warning for thunderstorms and lightning has been issued for the districts of Buxar, Kaimur, Rohtas, Bhojpur, Patna, Arwal, Aurangabad, Gaya, Jehanabad, Nalanda, Nawada, Sheikhpura, Begusarai, Lakhisarai, Jamui, Khagaria, Munger, Banka, Bhagalpur and Katihar.

The districts from where lightning deaths were reported in the last 24 hours included Gaya (2), Jamui (1), Aurangabad (1), Buxar (1), Katihar (1), Nalanda (1), Lakhisarai (1), Bhagalpur (1) and Banka (1).

One has to wonder how much of this cutting edge "science" is total bullshit too... Any physicists here?
