Disaster authorities in Guatemala report that over 30 people have died as a result of severe weather incidents during this year's rainy season.

Teams from Coordinadora Nacional para la Reducción de Desastres de Guatemala (CONRED) attended a total of 906 rain-related incidents such as floods, landslides and structural collapse during the 2021 rainy season which normally runs from May to November.

During this time 11,911 people have been displaced and around 1.5 million affected in some way. Five thousand homes and 131 schools have been damaged. More than 230 roads and 35 bridges have been damaged or destroyed.

CONRED reported fatalities in the departments of Chimaltenango (1), Quetzaltenango (1), Sololá (3), Suchitepéquez (7), Escuintla (2), Guatemala (3), Quiché (5), San Marcos (2), Alta Verapaz (3), Baja Verapaz (1), Sacatepéquez (1), Chiquimula (1) and El Progreso (2). Two people are still missing and at least 17 were injured.

Heavy rain in parts of Borneo Island has caused severe flooding and triggered deadly landslides in Central and West Kalimantan Provinces of Indonesia.

Areas of Sekadau Regency in West Kalimantan Province have been flooded since 23 October, according to the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). Some areas are under water up to 2.5 metres deep.

Sekadau Regency BPBD said that as of 27 October, 2,541 houses were damaged, a total of 8,430 people affected and 1,879 people displaced across Sekadau Hilir and Belitang Districts.

Two people have died after they were struck by lightning at Manoaha, a village near Agotime Kpetoe.

Two youth were killed and three others suffered injuries when lightning struck them at the Yerugundi Falls, at Moodbidri here on November 1.

The deceased have been identified as Maniprasad (22) and Yashwanth (22) from Kanchibailu. The injured have been identified as Praveen Kumar, Ganesh and Sandeep.

According to sources, on November 1, a group of five youth had gone to the Yerugundi Falls. At around 5:30 pm when there was high-intensity rain with thunder and lightning in Moodbidri, the youths were hit by lightning. While Maniprasad and Yashwanth succumbed at the spot, Praveen Kumar, Ganesh and Sandeep were injured.

The injured were rushed to the Mount Rosary private hospital in Moodbidri for treatment.

A case has been registered in the Moodbidri police station and investigation is on.

Magnitude 6.1 earthquake hits South Sandwich Islands Region, USGS reports

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake was reported in the South Sandwich Islands Region, according to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Underwater quakes have been recorded on Montagu Island, the Central Islands, and the South Sandwich Islands at a depth of approximately 35 kilometers.

Geologist services have not issued a tsunami warning for this quake.

Flash-flooding after heavy rain and hail in Erbil, Iraq

A bout of severe weather caused havoc in the vicinity of Erbil, in Iraq's Kurdistan Region, on Saturday, October 30, as flash flooding overcame vehicles on area highways. Intense rainfall and hail were reported in the region on Saturday, breaking a period of drought. Officials said several neighborhoods in the area had suffered damage, and asked residents to stay away from flood-prone roads, Rudaw reported. This footage, taken on a highway between Erbil and Shaqlawa, shows traffic brought to a halt by flash floods

Three people have died and another is in "critical condition" in hospital after a group of paddleboarders got caught in a flash flood on the River Cleddau in Haverfordwest, South Wales, police have confirmed.

Five others who were rescued from the water were uninjured, Dyfed-Powys Police said in a statement, adding it was a man and two women who had died and a woman still receiving treatment. No names have yet been released.

The shock conditions came as parts of the UK were battered with almost a month's worth of rain in 48 hours.

Police officers, the Welsh Ambulance Service (WAS), fire and coast guard joined the so-called multi-agency search on the Cleddau on Saturday. Air support was also provided by both the National Police Air Service (NPAS) and Wales Air Ambulance.

Nearby Quay Street was cordoned off and police asked people to avoid the area.

Woman trampled to death by elephant in a district of Assam, India - 19th so far in 2021

A 70-year-old woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant in lower Assam's Goalpara district on Friday, a forest department officer said.

The incident took place at around 7 am at Korkuchi in Dohela, divisional forest officer of Goalpara, Jitendra Kumar said.

This is the second instance of death in an elephant attack this month in Goalpara district, where 19 deaths were recorded due to such incidents so far this year, a forest department official said.

11-year-old boy mauled to death by stray dogs in Karnataka, India

In a tragic incident that occurred on the morning of Sunday October 31 at Shidlaghatta here, a boy died after he was attacked by a pack of stray dogs.

The deceased has been identified as Kalandar Khan (11).

He was studying in fourth standard at Shidlaghatta Urdu higher primary school.

It is said that the father of the boy, who is a daily wage labourer had gone to work on Sunday morning. The boy who came out of the house at the same time was attacked by around 20 stray dogs.

He was severely injured in the attack and collapsed on the road. A passerby chased away the dogs but the boy had breathed his last by then.


Villagers expressed rage at the local administration for not taking any action despite their repeated complaints about street dog menace in the area.
