A winter storm rolled into the area yesterday evening and blasted North Platte with snow. The snow began falling just around 5:00pm Thursday and as the evening progressed, the snow came flying down.
According to the National Weather Service, North Platte Office, a new single-day record was shattered when the weather service reported at 6:00am that 17.4" of snow was recorded. The previous record 13.9" that was set on January 18th, 2023.
Nebraska Department of Transportation crews are still clearing roads and travel is not advised. I-80 westbound is still closed from Paxton to Kearney while I-80 eastbound is closed from Sidney to Gothenburg. At approximately 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6, an avalanche accident occurred on the north side of Gunsight Mountain (8,342′) in the Elkhorn Mountains near Anthony Lakes, Oregon.
Nick Burks, an avalanche forecaster with the Northwest Avalanche Center and a part of the snow safety team at Mt. Hood Meadows ski area, was killed due to trauma sustained in the slide.
The Central Oregon Avalanche Center shared the news of the slide on Thursday, March 7, writing on social media that its staff was deeply saddened to announce the death of Burks and stating that a full investigation and report will be forthcoming in the coming days.

Tryphinah Mngomezulu died last week Saturday.
Police spokesperson Donald Mdlhuli says Mngomezulu's body was discovered by her employers at a home where she apparently worked as domestic worker.
"The team has so far managed to make some progress in the investigation, one being the confiscation of a CCTV footage. Police would like to refute suggestions that there was load shedding during the time of the incident.
"The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has already been contacted and from the details received by the investigators, the concerned dogs which allegedly attacked and killed the woman were put down on Sunday, 3 March 2024."

Natural fires have been raging in the Primorsky Territory for several days. According to the regional emergency rescue department, firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to residential buildings in the Khasan district. The operational headquarters of Primorye decided to triple the forces and means to fight the fire, in connection with which additional tankers were allocated and guards were also deployed in five more fire departments.
Meanwhile, RIA Novosti reported that two natural fires covering an area of 363 hectares are being extinguished near the villages of Khasan and Gvozdevo. A marine mystery has researchers searching for answers in the Lower Florida Keys.
Since December, 20 critically endangered smalltooth sawfish have been reported dead, according to the latest numbers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
"This is a very large species and the size of the sawfish we're seeing coming inshore and eventually dying," said Gil McRae, director of FWC's Fish and Wildlife Research Institute.
And while smalltooth sawfish are the only species reported dead, they are not the only ones seeing an impact.

A very strong magnitude 6.0 earthquake occurred under the sea 91 km (57 mi) from North Sulawesi, Philippines, in the afternoon of Friday, Mar 8, 2024 at 5.11 pm local time (GMT +8).

A tourist on a skiing holiday in Europe has been attacked by a bear.
The Danish skier was injured in a bear attack at a nature park in North Macedonia, in an area where authorities say mild winters have led to a surge in the brown bear population.
The skier was taken to a hospital in the western city of Tetovo, said Stojance Angelov, head of the country's state-run Crisis Management Centre.
He suffered injuries to his left leg in the attack that took place in the Shar Mountain area.
Mild winters in recent years have caused bears to cut short or skip hibernation, leading to a surge in their population and increased sightings in urban areas.
In Brazil, heavy floods have affected over 100 thousand people in the northwestern state of Acre. Over 12,000 people have been displaced in Acre state after heavy flooding hit the region following several days of torrential rain.
