Ukraine's central bank says an investigation into the country's largest lender, PrivatBank, shows that it had been "subjected to a large-scale and coordinated fraud" over at least a decade.

The fraud resulted in the bank, which was taken into state control in 2016, suffering a loss of at least $5.5 billion, the central bank said in a statement on January 16.

One of the bank's former main shareholders, Ihor Kolomoyskiy, dismissed the results of the probe as "nonsense."

The central bank commissioned the independent audit conducted by the global investigation firm Kroll and other international companies.

The number of Swedes who applied for a gender investigation has risen by 25 percent, indicating a steady increase in "gender dysphoria" diagnoses, which is commonly referred to as "being born in the wrong body." At the same time, more refrain from choosing their gender.

Over 1,000 Swedes applied to investigate their gender identity in 2017, a marked increase compared with the year before. Some of those suffering from gender dysphoria undergo sex-reassigning treatment, becoming transsexual, obtaining a new gender identity, both body-wise and legally.

A controversial Canadian professor's plan to promote his latest book at the Citadel Theatre has been dashed after the theatre refused his request to rent the venue.

Jordan Peterson, a University of Toronto psychology professor who is on an international book tour to promote 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, had already advertised on his website that the event would take place Feb. 11 in Zeidler Hall.

On Tuesday, Peterson tweeted to his nearly 300,000 followers that the Edmonton theatre cancelled his event without explanation.

In a statement to CBC News, Peterson says the Citadel Theatre's decision was "regrettable, made in haste and unprofessional."

North and South Korea have agreed to form a unified women's hockey team for the upcoming Winter Olympics, and will march under a unified flag at the opening ceremony, according to a joint statement.

North Korea is due to send a delegation which will consist of around 550 members including 230 cheerleaders, 140 artists and 30 Taekwondo fighters, to South Korea on January 25.

The agreement on Wednesday means this will be the first time a joint Korean sports team has been put together in 27 years, since the 1991 World Table Tennis Championships and FIFA World Youth Championship, and the first ever in Olympics history.

"Athletes from both Koreas marched together at international sports events about nine times so far," South Korean Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Do Jong-whan said on Monday, as quoted by the Chosun Ilbo. "Peace on the Korean Peninsula through sports is a value that the Olympics are pursuing."

Despite the agreement between Pyongyang and Seoul, the final decision about the team rests with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which will hold a meeting on in Switzerland on Saturday to discuss the possible joint Korean team and other matters relating to North Korea.

A woman has been left reeling after she discovered that her cat, handed over to the vet after being told the feline would require highly expensive long-term care, had been put on sale online for a meager ยฃ50.

Kelly Samuels, from Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, said she took Casper the cat to Vetsavers last Tuesday, believing her pet was suffering from an abscess.

When the cat's health deteriorated on Thursday, despite being treated with a course of antibiotics and painkillers, she took Casper back to the vet where he spent the night.

The next day the vet had still not removed the abscess, leading Samuels to believe the cat had a far more serious condition.

The European Union (EU) has announced its first-ever Europe-wide strategy on plastics recycling. It followed China's ban on imports of waste from Western countries.

All plastic packaging in the European market will be recyclable by 2030, said the EU Commission in a press release. The consumption of single-use plastics will be reduced and the intentional use of microplastics will be restricted, it added.

An additional fund of โ‚ฌ100 million ($122.4 million) has been committed to finance efficient recycling technology, and to boost innovation in plastic recycling.

Global production of plastics has increased twentyfold since the 1960s, according to the EU. It estimated that every year Europeans generate 25 million tons of plastic waste, of which less than 30 percent is collected for recycling.

Tory MP forced to apologize for saying 'unemployed wasters' should get vasectomies

Benjamin David Bradley

Tory MP Ben Bradley has been forced to apologize after saying men on benefits should get vasectomies. Britain would "drown in a vast sea of unemployed wasters" if poor families had too many children, he said.

Bradley, 28, who was promoted to Tory vice-chairman for youth by Prime Minister Theresa May last week, made the comments in a blog post in 2012.

He made the comments in support of former Tory Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith's introduction of benefit caps.

Bradley claims he has "matured" since writing the now deleted remarks.

The controversial blog post read: "Sorry but how many children you have is a choice; if you can't afford them, stop having them! Vasectomies are free.

"People have to take responsibility for their own lives, and if they are struggling but working hard to help themselves then they should get help. But if they choose to have 10 kids they should take responsibility for that choice and look after them, not expect everyone else to foot the bill!

A new report released by the Department of Homeland Security Tuesday shows 75-percent of convicted terrorists in America were born abroad. From the data:
According to a list maintained by DOJ's National Security Division, at least 549 individuals were convicted of international terrorism-related charges in U.S. federal courts between September 11, 2001, and December 31, 2016. An analysis conducted by DHS determined that approximately 73 percent (402 of these 549 individuals) were foreign-born. Breaking down the 549 individuals by citizenship status at the time of their respective convictions reveals that:

-254 were not U.S. citizens;
-148 were foreign-born, naturalized and received U.S. citizenship and,
-147 were U.S. citizens by birth.

The Boston bombings in context: How the FBI fosters, funds and equips American terrorists

In another article we read:
[FBI informant Craig] Monteilh was involved in one of the most controversial tactics: the use of "confidential informants" in so-called entrapment cases. This is when suspects carry out or plot fake terrorist "attacks" at the request or under the close supervision of an FBI undercover operation using secret informants. Often those informants have serious criminal records or are supplied with a financial motivation to net suspects.

In the case of the Newburgh Four - where four men were convicted for a fake terror attack on Jewish targets in the Bronx - a confidential informant offered $250,000, a free holiday and a car to one suspect for help with the attack.

In the case of the Fort Dix Five, which involved a fake plan to attack a New Jersey military base, one informant's criminal past included attempted murder, while another admitted in court at least two of the suspects later jailed for life had not known of any plot.

Such actions have led Muslim civil rights groups to wonder if their communities are being unfairly targeted in a spying game that is rigged against them. Monteilh says that is exactly what happens. "The way the FBI conducts their operations, it is all about entrapment ... I know the game, I know the dynamics of it. It's such a joke, a real joke. There is no real hunt. It's fixed," he said.
By the way, it was the FBI that informed in September that it was investigating an equal number of foreign terrorists as domestic violent extremists affiliated with white supremacists, anti-government and other groups.
