Riots at the University of California, Berkeley against Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos cost the school more than $100,000 in damages. Meanwhile, three protesters were arrested. RT America's Brigida Santos reports, speaking with students at the school.

Comment: Why did the police stand down for 4 hours letting $100,000 worth of damage to be done and people to be physically attacked?

University of California Berkeley police praised its officers for "tremendous restraint" during protests that scuttled Breitbart News editor Milo Yiannopoulos' speech at the school, but others in attendance criticized the police for lack of action.

A scheduled speech by Yiannopoulos was canceled on Wednesday by campus police, who said they could not guarantee the safety of attendees amid a crowd of demonstrators that included about 150 aggressive anti-fascist protesters intent on shutting down the forum. About 1,500 people were in attendance for the demonstration, most of them peaceful protesters, police said.

"Amid an apparently organized violent attack and destruction of property at the Martin Luther King Student Union, the University of California Police Department determined that it was necessary to evacuate Milo Yiannopoulos from the campus and to cancel tonight's scheduled 8 pm performance," campus police said in a statement.

"The violence was instigated by a group of about 150 masked agitators who came onto campus and interrupted an otherwise non-violent protest." A non-student who failed to leave the premises upon police orders was the only known arrest that occurred Wednesday evening, the San Francisco Chronicle reported citing campus police.

Eleven people were arrested outside New York University's student center during violent protests over a speech by conservative commentator Gavin McInnes. Students and 'antifa' protesters clashed with supporters of McInnes and President Donald Trump.

The Canadian-born McInnes was invited to speak by the NYU College Republicans on Thursday evening. Outside the student center, protesters and activists repeatedly clashed with members of 'ProudBoys,' a fraternal order founded by McInnes, and Trump supporters who came to his defense.

"I'm dumbfounded that NYU would invite somebody who is a hate speaker," NYU student Tama Fine told WNBC.

McInnes said he was pepper-sprayed when entering the student center, which prompted the first melee to break out between his followers and protesters. New York police officers stepped in to form a barrier between the protesters and McInnes supporters.

"I got there as Gavin McInnes was making his way into the Kimmel center and huge fighting broke out," Rebecca Goyette, an artist and adjunct professor at various colleges in New York told RT. "I saw some of his supporters being actively aggressive against NYU students. It turned into a big melee on his way in. Then I saw this guy, Franklin Right, wearing a red lumber jack shirt, he started a whole chant of 'Heil Hitler' with the Nazi salute." Goyette said students were chanting back "F*** white supremacy!"

Jewish identity in Ukraine is under threat and in danger of disappearing completely, Eduard Dolinsky, executive director of the Ukrainian Jewish Committee, told an Israeli newspaper.

Dolinsky voiced his concerns to the Jerusalem Post while on a four-day trip to Israel sponsored by the Israeli-Jewish Congress, which promotes ties between Israelis and European Jews. He was accompanied by MP and leader of the Ukrainian Jewish Committee, Olexander Feldman.

"The Ukrainian Jewish community is in crisis," Dolinsky told the newspaper on Tuesday. "Either we should decide that the last one turns off the light, or we need to continue our struggle."

Texas Jews hand over keys to the synagogue to Muslims whose mosque burned down

Victoria Islamic Center

In the small Gulf Coast city of Victoria, Texas, there are several churches, but just one synagogue, and one mosque — at least, until the mosque mysteriously burned down on Saturday, according to the New York Times.

Now, in a sense, the synagogue has become a mosque: the Jews of Victoria handed the Muslims the key to the building, so they would have a place to worship while rebuilding.

"Everyone knows everybody, I know several members of the mosque, and we felt for them," said Robert Loeb, the president of Bnai Israel, which affiliates with the Reform movement.

On Sunday, the Victoria community held an interfaith event in front of the mosque. Through local donations and a GoFundMe page, the mosque raised over $900,000 in the span of one day to rebuild the mosque. The Jewish Anti-Defamation League's southwestern arm also attended the event.

Woman sues city after cop who answers her 911 call violently rapes her

Milwaukee's failure to remove a rapist from its police force will cost the city $2.5 million in a civil settlement, according to a letter from the city attorney.

Iema Lemons sued the city, the police chief and Ladmarald Cates, a former officer who is now serving a 24-year federal prison term for violently raping her after she called to report vandalism to her home, the 2013 complaint states.

Although Cates was the subject of multiple complaints regarding his on- and off-duty behavior, prior to July 16, 2010, the date of Lemons' rape, he was not removed from the force and remained in daily contact with the public while performing his duties.

Complaints against Cates included a domestic violence arrest for choking and pushing his girlfriend, who was also a police officer, and accusations of sexual misconduct made in 2005 against Cates by a female inmate.

Cates was again accused of sexual misconduct in 2007 after a woman arrested for theft claimed he had sex with her in a jail cell after promising he would get her released if she complied. Her case was eventually closed without proper investigation, Lemons claims in her suit.

Lemons asserts in her lawsuit that Cates qualified as a sexual predator, since the first allegation involved a female inmate who was severely intoxicated and the second involved one who was clearly mentally ill, and that "Sex with a prisoner constitutes criminal sexual assault."

Former Norwegian PM held at Dulles for questioning over a prior trip to Iran

Kjell Magne Bondevik

Former Norwegian Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik was held and questioned at a US airport because of a stamp in his diplomatic passport stemming from a 2014 visit to Iran. The hold-up, which he says has nothing to do with Trump's travel ban, had him "provoked".

Bondevik, who twice served as a Prime Minister of Norway and is still eligible to a diplomatic travel document, was held earlier this week at a Dulles air hub outside Washington DC.

He was travelling to the US to attend the National Prayer Breakfast, a string of high-profile gatherings attended by international guests and religious leaders following the inauguration of the new US President.

However, Bondevik was taken aside by the US airport staff and unceremoniously bundled into a room with people from the Middle East who were also subjected to checks. After waiting for over half an hour, he was questioned for 20 minutes over his visit to Iran, before being allowed in.

"They began to ask me why I had been in Iran and what I was going to do in the US," he told the Norwegian TV2. Bondevik, who currently serves as President of the The Oslo Centre human rights organization, was in Iran in 2014 to deliver a speech.

Facebook, Google and other tech giants pen an open letter to Trump opposing travel ban

facebook google
In the backlash over Trump's executive order on immigration, Alphabet, Apple, Facebook, Uber, Stripe, CPG and various manufacturing companies have penned a letter opposing U.S. President Trump's travel ban, ReCode reported overnight.

The letter stresses that the executive order's blanket "suspension" - it avoids the word "ban" - is "not the right approach" to strengthening national security. The letter also argues in favor of supporting the DACA program. The goal is to publish the open letter this week, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the discussions are private. Changes are still being made to the document, and it's possible it may not be released.

"We share your goal of ensuring that our immigration system meets today's security needs and keeps our country safe," said a draft of the letter. "We are concerned, however, that your recent Executive Order will affect many visa holders who work hard here in the United States and contribute to our country's success." The draft, noted by Bloomberg, also states that "our nation's compassion is part of what makes it exceptional," and continues by offering to help the administration come up with ways to set up thorough screening while avoiding a complete suspension to U.S. refugee programs. The companies also offer aid in resolving the status of the 750,000 so-called "Dreamers," undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children and governed by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. The program, created by former President Barack Obama in 2012, has allowed more than 700,000 people to obtain renewable two-year work permits.
