Zuckerberg's sudden censorship thaw is not free speech

Facebook is trying to realign itself to stay relevant. But will it go beyond paying mere lip service to those demanding freedom?

Why are some folks gobbling up the notion that having the newly restored right to fire off as many "c**ts," *d**ks," and "a*****es" as you want on Facebook is the best thing for free speech since the Magna Carta?

Facebook's safe space for easily triggered mental midgets is now supposed to suddenly transform into a beacon of free speech and debate. But only for some. Sort of. Who are apparently now free to call transgenderism a mental illness, for example. Everyone else will have to wait for their potential future liberation from the virtual hall monitor.

Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook and its parent company, Meta, has just announced that audiences won't be subjected to thought policing through fact-checking anymore. Well, American audiences, at least. And not by professional gatekeepers designated specifically for the task. The language patrol will also apparently unclench a bit.

"Starting in the US, we are ending our third party fact-checking program and moving to a Community Notes model," the company announced, citing the open collaborative model of Elon Musk's X Platform. The move comes in the wake of Zuckerberg's pilgrimage to Mar-a-Lago where he met with incoming US President-elect Donald Trump - who was himself banned and restricted by Meta until last summer - and his perpetual sidekick, self-styled "free speech absolutist" Musk.

Comment: The weight of 'certain demands' will continue to influence Facebook's decisions. We won't be surprised.

Trump: Jack Smith is a 'disgrace' after special counsel resigned from DOJ

'He left town empty handed!

President-elect Trump blasted special counsel Jack Smith as a "disgrace" to himself and the country following Smith's resignation from the Justice Department.

Smith's resignation was announced in a court filing Saturday.

"The Special Counsel completed his work and submitted his final confidential report on January 7, 2025, and separated from the Department on January 10," a footnote in the filing said.

Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social on Sunday to criticize Smith for his investigations into the incoming president.

Comment: So it seems Smith has failed in his grand mission to 'get Trump'. Not to worry. He'll still be rewarded, probably with some cushy professor job at a woke university. These types always land on their feet, no matter how egregious their record is.

Trump, Iran and the Obama strategic blueprint

US & Iran
© globalresearch
Like a smashed antique clock - with its elaborate cogs, ratchet wheels and innards splayed out from the casing - so the mechanics of the Middle East lie similarly exposed and broken. All the region is in play - Syria, Lebanon, Qatar, Jordan, Egypt and Iran.

The original Obama strategic blueprint for containing and balancing the potentially violent energies of West Asia was subsequently handed to Team Biden at the end of the Obama term - and it still clearly bore the Obama imprimatur right up until its collapse after 7 Oct 2023.

Netanyahu deliberately smashed its mechanics: In acts of wanton destruction, he destroyed the prevailing status quo, which he saw as an American straitjacket preventing the attainment of a Greater Israel reaching out to its 'Grand Victory'. Netanyahu resented the American constraints - though by breaking the extant mechanism, paradoxically, instead of liberating Israel, he may have unleashed dynamics that will prove far more threatening (i.e. in Syria).

The cornerstone to the Obama 'balanced region' was contained in a secret letter sent to Iran's Supreme Leader in 2014, in which, as the WSJ relates, Obama proposed to Khamenei joint efforts in Iraq and Syria against the Islamic State (where ISIS controlled territory). This joint action however, was made contingent on Iran reaching a nuclear deal with the U.S.

The letter explicitly acknowledged Iran's 'equities' in Syria: To assuage Iran's concerns about the future of its close ally, President al-Assad, the letter stated that the U.S.'s military operations inside Syria were not targeted at President Assad or his security forces.

The Obama understanding with Khamanei, it must be noted, thus implicitly extended to Hizbullah who were joined with Iran in fighting ISIS in Syria:
"Among other messages conveyed to Tehran, according to U.S. officials at the time, is that U.S. military operations in Iraq and Syria aren't aimed at weakening Tehran or its allies".
Of course, the Obama undertakings to Iran were lies: Obama had already signed in 2012 (or earlier), a secret Presidential Finding (i.e. an instruction) for U.S. intelligence support to Syria's rebels in their bid to oust President Assad).

At least 5,000 Palestinians have been killed and missing in Israel's ongoing offensive in northern Gaza since Oct. 5, local authorities said on Sunday.

"Some 9,500 others have also been injured, in addition to the detention of 2,600 people, including women and children, in a flagrant violation of all international conventions and norms," Gaza's government media office said in a statement.

"In the past 100 days, our people in northern Gaza have suffered the most horrific forms of killing, ethnic cleansing, destruction, and displacement," it added.

Mainstream media ignoring ethno-religious genocide under Syria's new rulers

HTS terrorists
© Via AFP/Al-Akhbar
Mainstream Western media previously wrote several puff pieces on Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its US-designated terror leader Abu Mohammad al-Jolani in the wake of Assad's ouster, but now that same media is completely ignoring the atrocities taking place under Jolani's watch.

Various armed allied groups of HTS are rampaging through the central and northern countryside, attacking Christians and Alawites, in a developing ethno-religious genocide. It has only been one month since Assad was overthrown.

Comment: Cui bono? ("to whom is it a benefit?"). One indication: ISIS enabler Netanyahu claims credit for overthrowing Assad. Are there other recent instances where Mainstream Media, and even Governments have largely ignored genocides or genocidal actions, and who benefited from these? Might some in the ISIS-like groups be more enslaved to their enablers and their intentions than to their outwardly professed ideals?

EU globalist explicitly threatens to cancel German election result if right wing AfD wins

Thierry Breton
© UnknownThierry Breton
Former French European Commissioner Thierry Breton has essentially openly confessed that the West stole the Romanian election and stands ready to do it again in Germany if deemed necessary.

"We did it in Romania, and we will do it in Germany if necessary," a translation from the French of Breton's recent appearance in European media said. Early last month a top Romanian court simply annulled the first round of the country's presidential election inorder to create what amounted to a 'do over' election.

Comment: What is proposed by Thierry Berton is less characteristic of a guided democracy than the situation in a totalitarian democracy described as "The conflict between the state and the individual should not exist in a totalitarian democracy, and in the event of such a conflict, the state has the moral duty to coerce the individual to obey." In short: Musk has a point.

Two major brush fires in the Greater Los Angeles Area have turned suburbs into war zones, and current weather conditions mean they could continue burning for another week. Amid reports of arson, looting and incompetence, many are wondering whether this natural disaster was entirely natural.

Meanwhile the British government is still feeling the heat over its handling of the 'grooming gangs' scandal, the French government is trying to silence Candace Owens for digging into the past of France's 'First Lady', and the incoming Trump administration is signalling a whole new direction for the American empire.

Following a decade of 'woke' and other absurdities, are we on the cusp of a 'conservative backlash'?

Trump's 'crazy' ideas not so crazy after all

DJTrump

Why is it that people are always calling for someone to think "outside the box," then when someone does, say, "Aaaak! He thought outside the box!"

In that view, President-elect Donald J. Trump has already committed (at least) three heresies: Buy Greenland, stop China from controlling the Panama Canal and deepen America's affiliation with Canada. All three ideas are neither crazy nor even new.

President Harry S. Truman looked at acquiring Greenland in 1946.

Thomas Jefferson
, after the Louisiana Purchase, proposed buying Cuba - just think how the Cubans would be prospering now, politically and economically, if that deal had gone through.

Those acquisitions didn't take place but in 1917, the US did acquire Denmark's Virgin Islands for $25 million.

As historian Stephen Press writes: As secretary of state, John Quincy Adams arranged debt relief for Spain in exchange for Florida.

Secretary of State William Seward acquired Alaska.

Comment: Trump's precedent: America is historically a composite of purchases, deals and mutual arrangements.

US playing 'fool's game' by ignoring Russia's red lines - Peter Kuznick

The American University professor spoke to RT after joining director Oliver Stone on Tucker Carlson's podcast.

The strategy pursued by the US in the Ukraine conflict risks provoking serious responses from Russia, Peter Kuznick, professor of history and director of the Nuclear Studies Institute at American University, has said.

Kuznick earlier appeared on US journalist Tucker Carlson's podcast show alongside director Oliver Stone. In an exclusive interview to RT on Saturday, he warned against assuming Russia's red lines can be crossed without consequence:
"Russia keeps drawing red lines, and the United States keeps crossing them on the assumption that Russia is 'bluffing' and that President Vladimir Putin is not going to follow through on his threats."
He described this approach as a "fool's game," warning it could lead to severe repercussions.

Kuznick criticized the belief that Russia will remain passive, calling it "insanity" and stressing that such assumptions gamble with global safety.

CIA can read WhatsApp messages - Zuckerberg

Encryption prevents Meta from accessing chats, but it is powerless when someone logs directly into a user's phone, the company's CEO has said.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has acknowledged that US authorities, including the CIA, can access WhatsApp messages by remotely logging into users' devices, effectively bypassing the platform's end-to-end encryption.

Speaking on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast on Friday, Zuckerberg explained that while WhatsApp's encryption prevents Meta from viewing message content, it does not protect against physical access to a user's phone.
