Stratfor founder: NATO foundations have crumbled, an anachronism with no military or mission

Jens Stoltenberg

The foundations of NATO have "dissolved" since the end of the Cold War, with Europeans reluctant to invest financially and militarily, and the US unwilling to operate within the constraints of the alliance which lacks any unified strategic outlook, wrote George Friedman.

The internationally-recognized analyst and reputed geopolitics expert, George Friedman, who founded private intelligence company Stratfor, has offered some frank and telling views on the role of NATO as well as shrinking European military might and its "motivation" to defend itself.

While talking about what he termed "Russian ambitions," Friedman repeatedly stated that the military bloc gradually becomes an "anachronism."

Comment: It's interesting reading Stratfor's take on NATO. Since Stratfor is often called a "shadow CIA", his comments likely reveal the mindset of the American elites regarding Europe. His comments might be a subtle message to European leaders to get in line and do what you're told or we'll find someone who will.

Regrouping complete: Syrian 'rebels' ready to escalate the Syrian war

Several Syrian rebel groups unleashed a wide-scale offensive in northwestern and central Syria on Monday.

In a corresponding statement the leaders of about a dozen armed factions announced the formation of a so-called "joint operation room" to coordinate new attacks on government forces.

The statement came just hours after the chief negotiator of the Syrian opposition delegation in Geneva called to ignore the months-long ceasefire and resume the fighting.

Comment: This was predictable. The 'moderate rebels' were never interested in peace, only domination by force. The only reason for peace talks and a ceasefire was because they were suffering great losses on the battlefields. Now, having had time to regroup and receive some more weapons from their state sponsors (e.g., anti-aircraft missiles), they're ready to try again. Good luck, guys, because you're going to need it.

Comment: In reality, the ceasefire has not actually been broken, at least not to any large degree. Russia still maintains 64 truce agreements with Syrian towns, and 50 with militant groups. The number of ceasefire violations per day has consistently been around 5-10. These groups now claiming the ceasefire is over either never signed on in the first place, or are themselves guilty of violations. The Russian ceasefire monitoring group reports for today:
Intensification of warfare by Jabhat al-Nusra in the north-east of the Latakia province has been registered. Within last 24 hours, terrorists have launched offensive against the government troops for two times.

As a result, militants supported by tanks and armored personnel carriers have managed to capture Herbet al-Arus after performing massive artillery shelling.

Militants have failed to capture Salma. Having suffered losses, terrorists retreated to positions, which they had kept before.

Militants performed mortar shelling against positions of Turkish army near Metishli from Ain Shammas. Such provocative actions were aimed at firing in response by the Turkish Armed Forces and setting off the Syrian peacemaking process.

In Damascus, Jabhat al-Nusra militants carried out firing with mortars and small arms against Basatin Abu Jarash.

IRS tells taxpayers to come clean over Panama Papers or else

The agency Americans love to hate, the Internal Revenue Service, put on its Robin Hood hat to warn US tax cheats connected with illegal activity in the #PanamaPapers to participate in its "get out of jail free card" program - or else.

US officials told NBC News about two global meetings they had attended in which they were advised how to use the leaked papers to identify tax dodgers among its citizens.

More than ten million documents containing information on more than 214,000 offshore companies were leaked to the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung by a whistleblower from the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca.

"People hiding assets offshore should recognize the continued changes and progress in the international tax arena," the IRS said, stressing that an offender's best option was to "come forward voluntarily and participate in the IRS Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program", a sweetheart deal which allows those who steal from the American people by dodging tax to resolve their penalties and earn protection from criminal liability.

US aggression: Pentagon will deploy underwater drones in South China Sea

In the latest sign that the US has no intention to back down in the South China Sea, the Pentagon has announced plans to launch underwater drones near the Spratly archipelago.

Over the past year, Washington has expressed outrage over a series of land reclamation projects by Beijing in the South China Sea. In a show of opposition, the Pentagon has conducted several provocative actions in the region, including Navy patrols within the territorial limits of those islands and surveillance flights through Chinese airspace.

"Countries across the Asia-Pacific are voicing concern with China's land reclamation, which stands out in size and scope, as well as its militarization in the South China Sea," US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said during a visit to the USS Stennis in the South China Sea on Friday.

While Beijing has repeatedly urged for calm, Washington has ratcheted up its maneuvers, announcing new plans to deploy a fleet of unmanned submersibles into the waterway.

Bad business partners: Saudis blame Iran and Russia for low oil prices while refusing to work with others

Instead of trying to cooperate and find a solution to fix the problem of low oil prices, the Saudi government blamed Iran and Russia for failing to reach an agreement on freezing oil production during a Sunday meeting in Doha, Mohammad Sadeq Joukar, a leading expert of Iran's Ministry of Oil, told Sputnik in an interview.

According to Joukar, the Gulf Kingdom hoped to see that Russia would force Iran to make concessions in Syria and reduce Tehran's oil output levels.

"By shifting the blame [for failing to reach an agreement on freezing oil production] to Russia and Iran, Riyadh saw an opportunity to stir relations between the two countries. Saudi Arabia expected that Russia would put pressure on Iran in several different areas: cooperation on the Syrian front, military partnership and cooperation on stabilizing the situation in the Middle East," the Iranian oil expert told Sputnik.

On Sunday, negotiators from the world's major oil-producing countries, including both Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC)members and non-cartel producers, failed to reach an agreement on freezing production levels in talks in Doha, Qatar.

Saudi Arabia's aggressive foreign policy puts pressure on global oil prices, causing them to fall, Joukar said.

Killary Clinton above the law: Email scandal shows double standards, privilege of the elite

hillary clinton crazy face
BOLO: presidential candidate, armed and considered extremely dangerous, known to cackle with creepy laughter at inappropriate times.
Secretary of State Clinton was harsh on subordinates who were careless with classified information, but those rules apparently weren't for her, a troubling double standard, says ex-CIA analyst Ray McGovern.

"Enough of the emails," said Sen. Bernie Sanders in Brooklyn-ese, while turning to Secretary Hillary Clinton during their first debate on Oct. 13, 2015. Sanders won loud applause for what seemed a gentlemanly gesture in withholding criticism for her use of a private email server for classified information.

But when Sanders said "The American people are sick and tired of hearing about your damn emails," I had a flashback to a House hearing three decades ago on large liberties taken with the law during the Iran-Contra affair under President Ronald Reagan. Beginning his testimony, then-Secretary of State George Shultz made the mistake of saying, in effect, who cares about laws being violated: "The American people are tired of hearing about Iran-Contra."

Rep. David Obey, D-Wisconsin, was quick to respond: "Mr. Secretary, I did not take an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States until I got tired."

Comment: Manning got 35 years in prison for lower-level leaks than Clinton's. What a wonderful world we would live in if Clinton faced a proportional sentence! Unfortunately, as McGovern points out, she's likely to get away with a minor slap on the wrist, if that. See also: James Petras: Trump the 'fascist' and Hillary the psychopath

Dazed and confused EU has no clear mission and lacks goals

EU parliament

The European Union is not only facing a series of difficult problems that needs to be solved in a quick and effective manner, but a more important existential question - what's the whole point of the union?

As a very important referendum in Britain, which will decide whether the country will remain in the EU, is fast approaching in June, there is a need for EU leaders to explain the purpose and values of the EU to European citizens, political analyst Nikolay Pakhomov wrote for the National Interest.

"Surprisingly, today's EU does not state its goals and mission clearly," the author wrote, according to the National Interest.

To say the least, European citizens are confused by how the huge bureaucratic system of the EU works with its complex voting system and plans that only a few people understand.

Furthermore, according to one of its key treaties, the EU is supposed to promote peace and human rights both within the union and around the world.

But all of this written in the EU's treaty goes contrary to what the organization is currently doing in regards to Middle Eastern refugees.

European defense officials are to discuss sending thousands of troops to Libya. The talks come as UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond pays an unannounced visit to Tripoli in a show of support for the country's new UN-backed government.

The UK is in talks to deploy as many as 1,000 troops to the war-torn country amid concerns the newly installed unity government is failing to stem the rising tide of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) and people smuggling.

Air Vice Marshal Edward Stringer, assistant chief of defense staff, is set to fly to Rome to discuss with Italian and French commanders the possibility of committing troops to the 6,000-strong Italian-led Libya International Assistance Mission.

UN Ambassador Churkin: Close Turkey-Syria border

holding a flag
© www.presstv.irAnd what have we here?
Russia has called for the closure of the Turkish-Syrian border to prevent the flow of Takfiri militants and weapons supplies into the Arab country. Russia's UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said during a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting on countering terrorism on Thursday that UNSC members should impose a complete trade embargo on Takfiri Daesh terrorists, al-Qeda's Syria branch of al-Nusra front, and other militant groups operating across Syria. He also referred to the smuggling of Syrian oil and ancient artifacts by militants and said concrete steps are needed to stop such trafficking.

The Russian official accused Turkey of "complacency or inaction" in allowing weapons and militants to cross into Syria via Turkish soil. Churkin urged the Ankara government to invite, "on a voluntary basis," international observers to visit its border with Syria. "If Turkey feels that it is doing everything necessary to curtail the flows of supplies to terrorists, this could be corroborated by independent monitors." Turkey's UN Mission has rejected the remarks by Russian official as "baseless."

Comment: Aye, the rub and response!

Churkin had in a recent letter to the 15-member council pointed out that millions of dollars worth of industrial chemicals and explosives were smuggled across Turkey's border to extremist groups in recent years.

In December last year, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Moscow and Washington had agreed that the Turkish border with Syria and Iraq must be closed as a key measure in fighting against the Daesh terrorist group. Moscow says it has evidence indicating the complicity of Ankara in the smuggling of oil from territories held by Daesh in Syria and Iraq.

Ankara has repeatedly been accused of being one of the main supporters of the militant groups operating in Syria amid reports that it actively trains and arms the Takfiri militants there and facilitates their safe passage into the Arab country. Turkish opposition daily Cumhuriyet published videos in June 2015 purportedly implicating the Turkish Intelligence Service, also known as the MIT, in ensuring safe passage into Syria for Daesh. Damascus has long been saying that Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar are funding and arming anti-Syria terrorist groups, including Daesh.

Comment: Time-after-time Russia exposes the subterfuge and reveals the character of the enablers of terrorist organizations by their own actions. Time-after-time Russia offers them a way out.

Spy plane deal with UK may be compromised after US naval officer is charged with espionage

Questions have been raised about the UK's multi-billion P-8 Poseidon spy plane deal after a US Navy expert on the aircraft's capabilities was charged with espionage. It is feared he may have sold secrets to China or Taiwan.

The P-8 Poseidon is supposed to replace Britain's controversial Nimrod aircraft at a cost of up to £3.2 billion. It is already in service with the US military, flown by the Hawaii-based Special Projects Patrol Squadron, where Lt. Cmdr. Edward Chieh-Liang Lin was based.

While Lin appears to have served on the other of the unit's two spy planes - the naval reconnaissance variant of EP-3E Aries II - the secretive black ops squadron also flies the Poseidon, bringing the alleged spy into close contact with a key strand of Britain's future defense.

Lin has now been charged with espionage and using a prostitute. Although he is reported to have been arrested at least eight months ago, the case only emerged through a heavily redacted court document. The case has been designated a national security matter and deferred to the Navy's highest command.

The UK has already committed to buying nine P-8s, which are designed to spot submarines and enemy ships and carry out mass surveillance by sucking up information through their powerful scanners. Deliveries of the aircraft are due to begin before 2020.
