UK 'defense' contractor BAE selling surveillance spy gear to UAE

The Danish subsidiary of a British defense contractor is selling surveillance gear to the United Arab Emirates, according to documents obtained by a Danish newspaper. The deal has sparked fears that the system will be used to repress political opponents.

The papers from the Danish Business Authority show that it issued an export permit last month to BAE Systems Applied Intelligence A/S, which gives the company the right to sell an "IP monitoring and data analysis system relating to national security and the investigation of serious crimes" to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Dagbladet Information reported.

The documents also show that BAE Systems already delivered such a system to the regime sometime before December 31, 2014, and that the new license is for "extension service, support, testing, and maintenance."

The system sold by BAE to the UAE may, among other things, make "extraction of selected metadata and application content (eg. voices, videos, messages, attachments)" and are specifically designed to "chart an individual or group of people's social networks," according to the EU list of products subject to export controls.

Comment: No shocker here. Consider that the UK has no problem selling bombs to Saudi Arabia which the damn well know will be used to target women, children, hospitals, and infrastructure. The first thing critics of defense war contractors need to know is that these people simply don't care. Their tools are designed for murder and political repression. The more capacity for murder and repression a regime has, the more stuff they will buy, and the more profits the contractor will make. It's that simple.

Google censors information regarding Killary's crimes - UPDATES

Judging by the top trending Google searches about presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, it seems that people have one thing they want to know:

Is Hillary Clinton going to jail?

Out of all the searches regarding the former Secretary of State, the most popular query was whether she would be imprisoned. These queries undoubtedly stem from the numerous violation of law surrounding her use of a private email server, as well the possibility of using her position in public office for personal gain via the Clinton Foundation.

Google has been the target of criticism by some that claim that the company hides negative search results regarding Clinton — with their autocorrect feature being accused of neglecting information relating to crimes committed by Hillary Clinton.

Comment: Assange: Google 'directly engaged' with Clinton campaign, controls information flow.

Update: After Rudy Giuliani went on Fox telling people to Google "Hillary Clinton illness", New York Times tech columnist Farhad Manjoo went full fascist, calling for Google to censor such information.

Luckily for him, Google has, and is, doing just that (at least to the best of their abilities). They're up to the same old autocomplete tricks:

Deadlock on Syria in marathon Geneva peace talks

Kerry and Lavrov in Geneva
The talks between the two foreign ministers in Geneva show that the US and Russia remain as divided about the Syrian conflict as ever. All they seem able to do is to try to set out the basic terms of their conflict in order to prevent it escalating out of control. However even that is probably too much for the hardliners in Washington.

Lavrov and Kerry ended 12 hours of talks in Geneva about Syria on Friday, but it is difficult to see what if anything of substance they achieved.

On the key political question - the Geneva peace process and the future of President Assad - they are as far apart as ever. The US continues to insist that President Assad must go as the inevitable of any peace settlement. The Russians say that is strictly for the Syrian people to decide. There was clearly no movement by either side on this issue.

'TTIP negotiations between EU and US have de facto failed'

Talks between the EU and the US on the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, or TTIP, have essentially failed, German Vice Chancellor and Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel has said.

"In my opinion the negotiations with the United States have de facto failed, even though nobody is really admitting it," the minister told ZDF broadcaster, according to a written transcript of the interview to be aired on Sunday.

"[They] have failed because we Europeans did not want to subject ourselves to American demands."

He noted that throughout 14 rounds of talks the two sides have not been able to find common ground on a single chapter of the deal being discussed. Among the stumbling blocks is a US objection to opening public tenders to European companies.

"For me, that goes against free trade," Gabriel previously commented regarding the issue.

Erdogan calls Putin as Russia seethes at Turkey's Syrian incursion

Russia furious at Turkish move to set up rebel "safe zone" inside Syria to assist Jihadi rebels there, putting the recently announced "normalisation of relations" between Russia and Turkey in jeopardy.

The Kremlin's account of the conversation is remarkable even by its standards for its terseness
"The two leaders discussed the development of Russia-Turkey trade and political and economic cooperation in keeping with the agreements reached in St Petersburg on August 9. Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan exchanged opinions on developments in Syria and pointed out the importance of joint efforts in fighting terrorism. They agreed to continue their dialogue on the issues of the bilateral and international agenda."
The true subject of the discussion will in fact have been the Turkish capture of Jarablus in northern Syria.

Whilst it seems the Turks did inform the Russians of this move in advance, it is clear that the Russians are to put it mildly unhappy about it. Though the Turks appear to have tried to arrange talks with the Russian military leadership presumably to discuss this move - even announcing a visit to Turkey by General Gerasimov, the Chief of the Russian General Staff - no such talks are taking place, with the Russians denying that a visit to Ankara by their Chief of General Staff was ever agreed, and the Turks now saying that the visit has been postponed.

From bad to worse: Clinton laying foundation for increasingly hostile relations with Russia

Putin_clinton

The relationship with Russia is one Clinton should be taking very seriously. If she wins the presidency in November, relations between Washington and Moscow will continue to be a major foreign policy priority. They have already hit a 25-year low. It should go without saying then, that when it comes to Russia, Clinton should not mince her words.

As a woman who spent four years as her country's chief diplomat, Clinton should know better than to publicly insult the leader of a country with whom she will have to work closely. Yet it appears that this has entirely escaped her awareness. Instead, she has opted to ramp up anti-Moscow paranoia to the point that it wouldn't be overly surprising if her campaign announced they were releasing an updated version of Red Channels — a 1950s pamphlet that named and shamed public figures suspected of being Kremlin sympathizers.

Corruption personified: Killary and the Clinton Foundation are exemplars of U.S. political rot

Hillary Clinton
© Rick Wilking / Reuters
Hillary Clinton may be enjoying a comfortable lead in national polls, but she is far from enjoying a comfortable night's sleep given the ever-widening maelstrom of scandals engulfing her presidential bid. And while Clinton delights in bloviating about a decades-long "vast, right wing conspiracy" against her, the fact is that it's the Clinton political machine's long and storied track record of criminality, duplicity, and corruption that haunts her like Lincoln's ghost silently skulking through White House bedrooms.

The latest in a string of embarrassing scandals is centered on the powerful Clinton Foundation, and the obvious impropriety of its acceptance of large donations from foreign governments (and wealthy individuals connected to them), especially those governments universally recognized as oppressive dictatorships whose foreign policy orientation places them squarely in the US orbit.

Of particular note are the Gulf monarchies such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar whose massive donations belie the fact that their oppression of women runs contradictory to Clinton's self-styled 'feminism' and belief "that the rights of women and girls is the unfinished business of the 21st Century." Is collaborating with feudal monarchies whose subjugation of women is the stuff of infamy really Clinton's idea of feminism? Or, is it rather that Clinton merely uses issues such as women's rights as a dog whistle for loyal liberals while groveling before the high councilors of the imperial priesthood?

What the Clinton Foundation hullabaloo really demonstrates is that Clinton's will to power is single-minded, entirely simpatico with the corruption of the military-industrial-financial-surveillance complex; that she is a handmaiden for, and member of, the ruling establishment; that Clinton represents the marriage of all the worst aspects of the political class. In short, Clinton is more than just corrupt, she is corruption personified.

#PayToPlay: State Dept to reveal Clinton's meetings with possible donors only after presidential election

Killary
The yet unreleased detailed schedules of the US former Secretary of State and now Democratic presidential nominee might be made public only in late December, while they might be of interest now, AP who have been seeking the calendars for years, reported.

The department expects to release the remaining some 2,700 pages of Hillary Clinton's schedules around December 30, its lawyers told AP in a phone conference this week. The news agency has "formally asked" the State Department to speed up the process so that the documents might be analyzed and published by October 15, some three weeks before the elections.

Calling the estimated date of release "unacceptable," Donald Trump's spokesman Jason Miller said in a statement that "voters deserve to know the truth before they cast their ballots."

Comment: Even if the emails are brought to light, you can bet Killary will hardly get a slap on the wrist.

German military fears Islamist infiltration, requests increased security screening for recruits

There are signs that Islamists are trying to join the German armed forces to get military training, and there is a risk they might use that training to carry out attacks in Germany or abroad, a German newspaper cited a draft document as saying.

Consequently, the armed forces want applicants to undergo a security check by the military counter-intelligence agency, starting in July 2017, so they can swiftly spot extremists, terrorists and criminals, Welt am Sonntag newspaper said in an article due to be published on Sunday.

Such security screening would require changes in the laws governing the military. A draft document justifying such changes, seen by Welt am Sonntag, said there are indications that Islamists are trying to get "so-called short-term servicemen into the armed forces" for training.
