The US Treasury Department has announced that it is sanctioning Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, describing the Constituent Assembly elections held in the country on Sunday as "illegitimate."

In an update on Monday, the US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control said it had added Maduro to its Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list. This means that any US-based assets of his have been frozen, and American citizens are forbidden from conducting any business with him.

"The following individual has been added to OFAC's SDN List: MADURO MOROS, Nicolas... President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela," the update read.

Comment: Sorry, Maduro, you didn't run it by Washington first, so it's illegitimate. You're fired!

'Policy of intransigence': Qatar's Foreign Minister hits back at Saudi-led group's demands as violating international law

Qatar's foreign minister has accused the four Arab countries which have severed ties with Doha of violating international law and pursuing a policy of intransigence. It comes just a day after the foreign ministers of the four nations gathered for a meeting in Manama.

Following Sunday's meeting in Bahrain's capital, the Arab quartet which accuse Qatar of funding terrorism, made clear that Doha must meet its previous list of 13 demands before they are willing to engage in dialogue.

Doha must also agree to the so-called "six principles" on fighting terrorism and extremism.

Responding to the group's Sunday statement, Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman al-Thani told Al Jazeera that the Saudi-led group's stance reflects the continuation of a "policy of intransigence" as well as a failure to recognize that sanctions taken against Qatar are unfair and illegal.

Anarchy in America

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned.

Things are falling apart.

How much longer we can sustain the fiction that we live in a constitutional republic, I cannot say, but anarchy is being loosed upon the nation.

We are witnessing the unraveling of the American dream one injustice at a time.

Day after day, the government's crimes against the citizenry grow more egregious, more treacherous and more tragic. And day after day, the American people wake up a little more to the grim realization that they have become captives in a prison of their own making. No longer a free people, we are now pushed and prodded and watched over by twitchy, hyper-sensitive, easily-spooked armed guards who care little for the rights, humanity or well-being of those in their care.

The death toll is mounting. The carnage is heartbreaking. The public's faith in the government to do its job-which is to protect our freedoms-is deteriorating.

With alarming regularity, unarmed men, women, children and even pets are being gunned down by police who shoot first and ask questions later, and all the government does is shrug and promise to do better.

Things are not getting better.

Remembering Khaled Al-Khateb, another brave journalist murdered by Syrian mercenaries

Syrian journalist Khaled Al-Khateb
Syrian journalist Khaled Al-Khateb was 25 years old when he was martyred by ISIS.
The latest but not the last martyr among the honest brave voices that reveal the truth and expose the suppression of information on war criminality, is the young and awesome Syrian journalist Khaled Al-Khateb, who was killed today when he came under fire from the so-called 'ISIS'. These blind rockets ended the life of the 25 years old Syrian reporter Khaled who recently joined the ranks of RT Arabic.

ISIS, barbaric as they did not care that the word 'PRESS' was clearly written on his field uniform.

Those criminals and their masters behind them always aim to silence the voice before the body and tragically, today they silenced both. Their aim is to kill the truth and those who report it.

Khaled was not the only one, we also lost Hamza from Almanar Tv, Yara Abbas from Syrian TV, Serena Shem from Press TV, the list is long. I'm sorry our blessed prophets , yes Prophets , you were killed while sending our message to the world , to help the innocent against the real war criminals!

German Economics Minister Brigitte Zypries tells EU to prepare countermeasures against US sanctions

German Economics Minister Brigitte Zypries

German Economics Minister Brigitte Zypries says new US sanctions law violates international law.

The German government has again weighed in with strong criticism of the latest US sanctions bill.

The latest comments have come from German Economics Minister Brigitte Zypries, who is reported by Reuters to have said the following
We consider this as being against international law, plain and simple. Of course we don't want a trade war. But it is important the European Commission now looks into countermeasures.
(bold italics added)

These are exceptionally strong words coming from the Economics Minister of the country which is the US's most important ally.

Comment: New penalties against Moscow proposed by US lawmakers violate international law and officials in Brussels should consider countermeasures, the German economy minister said on Monday.
According to the minister, "the Americans can not punish German companies because they operate economically in another country."

Last week, both chambers of the US Congress decided to impose new sanctions against Russia over its Crimea reunification and alleged meddling in US elections. The bill has still to be signed by US President Donald Trump. This is the first time Washington has made a move against Moscow without European consent.
The new US bill on anti-Russian sanctions will affect European countries cooperating with Russia in the energy sector, and, therefore, these restrictive measures can ultimately run counter to international law, German Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Brigitte Zypries, said in an interview with the newspapers, which are part of Germany's Funke media group, published on Monday.
"According to Zypries, Europe does not want a trade war with the US, that is why it has always been in favor of coordinated efforts with the US on the sanctions policy issue. In light of this, she recalled that the EU is exploring possible tit-for-tat moves.

The US Senate earlier approved a bill specifying tougher unilateral American sanctions against Russia, Iran and North Korea. Now this document titled "Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act" will be submitted to US President Donald Trump for his potential stamp of approval to become law.

Washington overreacting to North Korea's second successful missile test

A missile

North Korea's missile tests do not actually threaten the US. Instead of sabre rattling and blaming China the US needs to talk to Pyongyang.

North Korea's second successful test launch of its Hwasong-14 missile has resulted in typically fiery rhetoric and sabre rattling from Washington.

Firstly the US stepped up its military exercises with South Korea, flying B-1 Lancer bombers "across the Korean Peninsula" (presumably that means across South Korea, though the way the flight is being reported appears intended to convey the undoubtedly false impression that they might have also overflown North Korea). Then there was the announcement of a THAAD interceptor missile test.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has again called on the international community to "refrain from any steps that would further escalate tensions" on the Korean Peninsula, saying that Washington is playing a "baseless" blame game.
"We consider the attempts of the US and some other countries to shift the responsibility in what is happening [on the Korean Peninsula] onto Russia and China, and to almost blame Moscow and Beijing for 'conniving in' North Korea's nuclear missile ambitions, as baseless," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement Monday.
"We call on all sides involved to refrain from any steps that could lead to further escalation of tensions," it added.
Earlier, the US envoy to the UN, Nikki Haley, said that any new resolution by the UN Security Council "that does not significantly increase the international pressure on North Korea is of no value."

Power-talking to Americans: James Thurber on the lessons Putin still needs to master

thurber tiger king
© James ThurberThe Tiger Who Would Be King
President Vladimir Putin doesn't know how to talk to Americans. He thinks forbearance is the trick.

The advisors Putin listens to, like Dmitry Peskov the mouthpiece and Alexei Kudrin the wannabe premier, know even less. Peskov thinks giving large sums of money to a Hollywood hack is the trick. Kudrin thinks taking big promissory notes from oligarchs is the trick.

None of them has read the greatest American comic writer of the 20th century, James Thurber. His tale, "The Tiger Who Would Be King" (lead image), first appeared in the New Yorker magazine in 1927, and turns 90 years old in September. Not knowing it is a handicap Putin shares. The military junta now in charge in Washington - click for more about them - also haven't read the tale. That's because they lack the sangfroid and irony required by Thurber's sense of humour. The reason President Donald Trump hasn't is because he can't - he is witless.

Thurber's moral is: "You can't very well be king of beasts if there aren't any."

Unconsciously, Putin cribbed Thurber's idea of appearing to be speaking to children when he has something important to say.

US regime change in Venezuela: It's easy to suss out the truth if you follow the money

USsnake
© US-Venezuela Solidarity"Hands off Venezuela"
Venezuela's ongoing crisis is not driven by political ideology - it is not a battle of socialism versus capitalism or dictatorship versus democracy - it is the result of two centers of political power possessing opposing interests and colliding geopolitically.

The nation of Venezuela is currently under the control of Venezuelans who derive their support, wealth, and power from Venezuela itself - its people and its natural resource. This political order also receives aid and support from Venezuela's economic and military partners both in the region and around the globe.

The opposition opposed to the current political order and seeking to supplant it represents foreign interests and more specifically, the United States and its European allies.

The Opposition is Pro-Washington, Not "Pro-Democracy"

As early as 2002, US-backed regime change targeting then Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, sought to violently overthrow Venezuela's political order and replace it with one obedient to Washington. Current leaders of the opposition were not only involved in the 2002 failed coup, many are documented to have received political and financial support from the United States government ever since.

Comment: A clear analysis of the Venezuelan crisis and influences. There is no doubt the US has its sights on a destabilized Venezuela. As half the world turns towards and gratefully embraces multi-polarity, each Western 'pawn piece' becomes more and more crucial to hegemonic control.
