Puppet Masters
European Union officials are having a meltdown, all because Twitter CEO Elon Musk has withdrawn the platform from a "voluntary" EU code of conduct for tech firms to combat so-called "disinformation." And they have yet to cite a single actual example of it.
EU Internal Markets Commissioner Thierry Breton tweeted, "You can run, but you can't hide," citing a legal obligation to prevent disinformation from August. He's basically treating Musk, a guy who builds rockets and cars in America, like an unruly schoolchild, with Brussels in the role of the principal. French Digital Minister Jean-Noel Barrot even threatened to ban Twitter from the EU in a recent interview, citing the "grave" threat of disinformation.
Ukraine needs more weapons and ammunition to be able to carry out a successful counteroffensive against the Russian forces, the deputy head of President Vladimir Zelensky's office has said.
In an interview with British newspaper The Times on Saturday, Igor Zhovkva was asked why the much-anticipated operation by Ukraine, aimed at retaking land lost to Russia, still hasn't been launched.
"If you want to start a successful counteroffensive you need everything at your disposal, including artillery, armored vehicles and tanks, so probably we don't have enough," he replied.
Comment: Ukraine is delaying the counteroffensive it is being pressured into by the West for as long as it can. Zelensky et al., know it's doomed.
"If [the Russian soldiers] are alive, [I'll be at] the automobile border-crossing point Shebekino between 17:00 and 18:00," Gladkov said in a video address published on his Telegram channel. He was referring to a border crossing separating Russia's Belgorod Region from Ukraine's territory.
The governor was responding to a video published by the RDK and the 'Freedom of Russia Legion' - two neo-Nazi groups that previously claimed responsibility for several incursions into Russia this spring. Footage published by the militants shows them standing next to two Russian POWs, with one of them apparently injured.
Denis Nikitin, the RDK leader, claimed on the video that his fighters had entered the town of Novaya Tavolzhanka in Belgorod Region and offered to meet Gladkov in a local church "for a talk" in exchange for the POWs' release.
Gladkov said the fate of "our boys that are at the hands" of the militants was the only thing that prevented him from outright dismissing the militants' offer. He branded the RDK and the 'Freedom of Russia Legion' militants as "scoundrels, bastards, murderers and fascists," blaming them for civilian deaths.
Comment: The group includes Polish mercenaries, who released a statement today claiming involvement in the latest raid.
The announcement, accompanied by alleged photo and video evidence, was shared on social media accounts of the so-called "Polish Volunteer Corps."
The statement appears to refer to an incursion by saboteurs into the Grayvoron District of Belgorod Region, which took place on May 22.
The "Polish Volunteer Corps" said it unequivocally confirmed its role in the operation, stating that the group collaborated with the Russian Volunteer Corps, a neo-Nazi unit of Russian nationals fighting on behalf of Ukraine under the authority of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.
In a bid to prove its role in the May 22 raid, fighters from the Polish Volunteer Corps shared videos, in which they can be seen with Ukrainian T-72B tanks, American HMMWV armored vehicles, and Mi-8 helicopters of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The governor of Belgorod Region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, also mentioned the presence of Polish citizens among the saboteurs. On his Telegram channel, he recounted the story of a woman, whose husband - a member of the local self-defense forces - was killed in front of her. According to Gladkov, the woman was held captive by two Ukrainians, and she stated that the other group members were Poles and Americans.
Previously, the Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry discussed the involvement of the "Russian Volunteer Corps" and members of the "Freedom of Russia" legion in the Belgorod Region operation.
However, the "Russian Volunteer Corps" issued a statement on Sunday denying that members of the "Polish Volunteer Corps" had crossed the Russian border. The group claimed on social media that their Polish fellow combatants were involved in tasks such as prisoner escort, along with military and medical logistics, but strictly within the borders of Ukraine.
Warsaw has insisted it has nothing to do with the Polish militants fighting for Kiev. "The activities of Polish volunteers supporting Ukraine in the fight against Russia should not be identified with the authorities of the Republic of Poland", said Stanislaw Zaryn, spokesman for the coordinating minister of the country's special services.
We start with a list of attitudinal elements that most people would agree should count as part of woke. In this we are spoiled for choice, with a whole smorgasbord of examples from the personal, political and corporate spheres from which to discern the core elements. Here are our top five:
- Identity theft. This is best exemplified in gender appropriation, whereby anyone who says or believes they are a woman is indeed a woman and must be treated as such by others, at pain of social disapprobation and even legal punishment. The woke lack respect for previous identities.
- Illiberalness. The woke perspective in many areas features a suspension of belief in public debate and the value of diverse viewpoints, to the point of being willing to invade and sabotage public spaces in which such debates and viewpoints are aired.
- Cancel culture. We see the cancellation imperative of woke in the destruction of symbols and rituals of the previously dominant Western culture: felling monuments, defacing art, negating traditional days of celebration, using disruption and chaos to draw attention to causes, and targeting the careers of those who defend the pre-existing culture.
- Victimhood. Woke places primacy in the public sphere on helplessness and victimhood, preferably victimhood resulting from perceived injustices at the hands of traditional Western culture.
- Alarmism. Woke promotes the idea of the collapse of civilisation due to human-induced threats (like climate, viruses, or the Chinese government) and adopts ever new totems allegedly to ward off that collapse.
As promised, the White House hosted a virtual event followed by the issuance of a fact sheet and detailed strategic report last Thursday that described in some detail a sweeping plan that will be implemented to confront what it describes as surging antisemitism. I reported last week how the US Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt, who participated in the ceremony, has articulated the Biden Administration's somewhat hyperbolic view that "Antisemitism is not a niche issue...it is an existential threat to democracy." She had also regretted that "America has never done something like a national plan to fight antisemitism." It should be noted that Lipstadt's brief as ambassador is to confront what she perceives to be antisemitism all around the world, though it is likely that her role will expand to include domestic authorities under whatever new arrangements emerge as the Biden plan is implemented.
The plan that was unveiled was developed by an interagency task force created by Joe Biden last December, which was headed by "Second Gentleman" Doug Emhoff, who is both Jewish and has the misfortune to be married to Kamala Harris. It reportedly incorporates contributions and insights from claimed discussions with no less than "more than 1,000 community leaders" including various Jewish religious denominations and also representing both Jewish and non-Jewish civic organizations in the United States. Prior to the virtual event and press release, President Biden promised that the plan would "include more than 200 measures that government agencies, social media platforms and elected officials can adopt to counter rising antisemitism." The measures will reportedly include at least 100 "provisions" that will require congressional action.
Let's dig in.
1. Grayzone reporter detained by British counter-terrorism police for doing journalism.
The Grayzone's Kit Klarenberg was detained by "six anonymous plainclothes counter-terror officers" who "grilled him for over five hours about his reporting" upon returning to Britain on the 17th of May, according to a new report by Grayzone editor Max Blumenthal.
Blumenthal reports that Klarenberg was asked many questions about The Grayzone and his work with the independent outlet, saying police "seized the journalist's electronic devices and SD cards, fingerprinted him, took DNA swabs, and photographed him intensively," threatening him with arrest if he didn't comply.
According to the initial report, Durham did not take legal action to acquire the documents.
On Friday, Paul Sperry, a senior reporter for Real Clear Investigations, broke the news on Twitter, stating, "BREAKING: Hillary Clinton campaign contractor Fusion GPS held back more than 1,500 DOCUMENTS sought by Special Counsel Durham, claiming attorney-client privilege, and Durham didn't sue for the evidence."
The news raises concerns about the extent of the Clinton campaign's involvement in the Russia probe and their efforts to withhold potentially incriminating information.
Nine months after Giorgia Meloni was elected Prime Minister - remember the hysterical warnings about her being Mussolini in heels - the only horror the Italian left has experienced is electoral wipeout. At last weekend's local elections, Meloni's conservative Brothers of Italy party romped to victory in many towns that were once staunchly Socialist. As a jubilant Meloni crowed: 'Strongholds [of the left] no longer exist.'
At the same time Italians were endorsing Meloni, Spanish voters showed what they thought of the ruling Socialist Workers' party in their local and religion elections. Not much. The big winners were the Popular party and Vox, prompting a rattled Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to call a snap general election. According to El Pais his Socialist party needs 'a miracle to halt the conservative wave that has already swept through several European countries'.
The Senate voted Thursday to scrap President Biden's proposal to forgive more than $400 billion in student loan debt, a vote that is expected to force Biden to issue his fifth presidential veto since taking office.
In a 52-46 vote, the Senate passed a resolution disapproving of the Department of Education rule implementing Biden's plan. The vote was successful thanks to Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., Jon Tester, D-Mont., and Kyrsten Sinema, I-Ariz., who voted with all 49 Republicans to scrap the loan bailout.
The Senate vote followed last week's 218-203 vote in the House to kill the program that Republicans have said is unfair to Americans who either never took out student loans or paid them off.
Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., on the Senate floor before the vote about Biden's plan, said:
"It's something of a slap in the face to Americans who chose more affordable college options or worked their way through school to avoid taking on student loans, or whose parents scrimped and saved to put them through college. It's deeply unfair to ask the many Americans who worked hard to pay off their loans or who never pursued college in the first place to take on the burden of student debt for individuals who took out loans for college or graduate school and agreed to pay them back."Democrats voted overwhelmingly against the resolution and argued that Republican efforts to kill the program would hurt millions of Americans who have already qualified for debt relief.
Comment: Passing the buck? Canceling debt was Biden's promise. He can pay.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) issued a legally binding subpoena last week requiring the FBI to turn over the file by noon Wednesday.
Comer (R-Ky.) said after his early-afternoon call with Wray that the FBI chief confirmed the existence of an FD-1023 informant file from June 2020 accusing Biden of corruption and offered Comer and committee ranking member Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) "in camera review" of the document.
The FBI had refused to share the document ahead of a Tuesday deadline following a May 3 subpoena from Comer, which the chairman said he would enforce with contempt proceedings against Wray.
In a statement following the call, Comer indicated the document standoff would continue, saying: "Today, FBI Director Wray confirmed the existence of the FD-1023 form alleging then-Vice President Biden engaged in a criminal bribery scheme with a foreign national. However, Director Wray did not commit to producing the documents subpoenaed by the House Oversight Committee.
Comment: Newsweek puts out an explainer:
[...]
The specific document being sought is an FD-1023 form, an FBI record that contains an unverified report from a confidential source. Comer and Grassley's subpoena originally requested that Wray turn over all such documents created during the month of June 2020 that contained the word "Biden" to the House Oversight panel by May 30. The FBI failed to meet Tuesday's deadline.
Instead, Wray sent a letter to Comer on Tuesday, promising to giving lawmakers access to the requested information "in a format and setting that maintains confidentiality and protects important security interests and the integrity of FBI investigations." The FBI director also held a phone call with Comer and Grassley on Wednesday to discuss the bureau's decision further, offering the lawmakers "an opportunity to review information responsive to the subpoena in a secure manner to accommodate the committee, while protecting the confidentiality and safety of sources and important investigative sensitivities," the bureau told Newsweek via email later that day.
Comer was unsatisfied by his conversation with Wray, however, promising again Wednesday evening to move forward with contempt of Congress charges if the document is not released to his committee.
"Today, FBI Director Wray confirmed the existence of the FD-1023 form alleging then-Vice President Biden engaged in a criminal bribery scheme with a foreign national," read a statement posted to Comer's Twitter account. "However, Director Wray did not commit to producing the documents subpoenaed by the House Oversight Committee.
"While Director Wray — after a month of refusing to even acknowledge that the form existed — has offered to allow us to see the documents in person at FBI headquarters, we have been clear that anything short of producing these documents to the House Oversight Committee is not in compliance with the subpoena," Comer continued.
Newsweek has reached out to Comer's office via email for further comment on Wednesday's phone call.
What's in an FD-1023?
According to the FBI, an FD-1023 form is "used by FBI agents to record unverified reporting by a confidential human source." The record, however, does not validate the source's information, the bureau told Newsweek, nor does it "weigh" the source's record against other verified information obtained by the FBI.
"Revealing unverified or possibly incomplete information could harm investigations, prejudice prosecutions or judicial proceedings, unfairly violate privacy or reputations, create misimpressions in the public, or potentially identify individuals who provide information to law enforcement, placing their physical safety at risk," read a statement from the FBI.
"Information from confidential human sources and members of the public is critical to the work of the FBI and we are also committed to protecting the confidentiality of anyone who comes forward," the bureau added.
In the letter to Comer on Tuesday, Christopher Dunham, acting assistant director of the FBI, said that there are "significant limits on whether, when, and how confidential human source information can be provided outside of the FBI," reiterating that the caveats "are critical to the physical safety of our sources and others identified in source reporting, as well as to the integrity of our confidential human source program and longstanding Department of Justice confidentiality interests."
According to former FBI agent Tracy Walder, who spoke with NewsNation host Dan Abrams on Tuesday, FD-1023s are rarely shared outside of the bureau's possession "because the reality is, we want to protect our sources and methods."
"When we are releasing source information out into the public realm, that makes people then have a little bit of trepidation about coming to the FBI ... if they are not going to be protected," Walder continued.
What Republicans Want With the Document
Comer's pressure on the FBI is part of a larger promise by GOP lawmakers to increase its oversight of the Biden administration, claiming that federal law enforcement has been "weaponized" under the current White House.
Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who serves on the House Oversight Committee, has also expressed her intent of moving articles of impeachment against Biden over the whistleblower's accusations.
It remains unclear what exactly is contained within the sought-after FD-1023, however, and neither Comer nor Grassley have provided details regarding the accusations against the president. David A. Bateman, associate professor of government at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, previously told Newsweek that the accusations against Biden should be treated with "skepticism" and called Comer and Grassley's subpoena "a PR move."
"The very specificity of the claim — the repeated invocation of form FD-1023 — should be a tell," Bateman said. "They could just say that someone has made an allegation which they are planning to investigate, which as I understand it is what an FD-1023 form is, but that would be less tantalizing than teasing the possibility of a government document providing concrete evidence of a crime."
"If they can produce credible evidence, they will produce it," he added. "Until then, or until they've established a track record of producing real evidence, there's neither much real worry of impeachment nor any reason to participate in the hype job."
