Two hikers from Santa Rosa captured on video a rare waterspout off the Sonoma Coast this week.

Santa Rosa residents Annie Roche and Omar Rogers took the video Tuesday afternoon in the Ocean Cove area north of Jenner.

"To be honest I felt nothing but pure awe and amazement," wrote Rogers in an email about the sighting. "We just sat and wondered about the raw power and unimaginable force we were witnessing. Nature unfolding like this brings to mind thoughts of eternity."

According to the National Weather Service, waterspouts like the one in the video are called tornadic waterspouts, and are essentially tornadoes that form over water during storms like the recent atmospheric rivers that pounded Northern California, though they are rare for the region.

Using a novel imaging technique for volcanoes that produces high-resolution pictures of seismic wave properties, a new study reveals a large, previously undetected body of mobile magma underneath Kolumbo, an active submarine volcano near Santorini, Greece. The presence of the magma chamber increases the chances of a future eruption, prompting the researchers to recommend real-time hazard monitoring stations near other active submarine volcanoes to improve estimations of when an eruption might be likely to occur.

Nearly four hundred years ago, in 1650 C.E., Kolumbo breached the sea surface and erupted, killing 70 people in Santorini. This eruption, not to be confused with the catastrophic Thera (Santorini) volcanic eruption that occurred around 1600 B.C.E., was triggered by growing magma reservoirs beneath the surface of Kolumbo. Now researchers say the molten rock in the chamber is reaching a similar volume.

Multiple tornadoes ripped across Alabama on Thursday, including a particularly dangerous one near Selma, causing extensive swaths of damage.

A large and destructive tornado ripped through the Selma, Alabama, area Thursday afternoon as a severe weather outbreak struck the southern United States.

Selma, located about 40 miles west of Montgomery, was in the path of a large and extremely dangerous tornado around 12:30 p.m. local time on Thursday. Emergency response teams in Selma were providing assistance and cleaning roadways as of Thursday afternoon, according to an online post by the city.

Residents across Selma were told to seek shelter and avoid traveling on area roadways. Downed power lines were also reported throughout the region.

The latest snowstorm to hit the Truckee-Tahoe region dropped about 2 feet of snow in the last 24 hours which led to an emergency declaration and the closure of highways and schools on Tuesday and much more snow may be on the way.

Tahoe ski resorts are reporting up to 2 feet of snow, some a little more, some a little less, and the National Weather Service in Reno has a winter weather advisory in place from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday for more accumulation, including 2 to 5 inches at lake level and 5 to 10 inches above 7,000 feet. The evening work commute may be impacted. Strong winds are expected to gust as high as 70 mph which the service said could lead to extensive tree damage.

According to the Tahoe Snow app, Heavenly Mountain Resort has received 26 inches of snow in the past 24 hours with Palisades Tahoe reporting 21 inches, Kirkwood Mountain Resort 19, Sierra-at-Tahoe 16 and Northstar California reported the most at 27 inches.

Authorities in Flagler County, Florida, are overseeing the removal of a 21-foot orca that beached itself on the coast.

The orca, which beached itself and subsequently died on the coast of Jungle Hut Park, is currently undergoing a necropsy and removal process.

Deputies are on scene south of Jungle Hut Park in Palm Coast after a 21-foot orca whale beached itself this morning. It has since lost its life," the sheriff's department said via social media.

The Flagler County Sheriff's Department has enlisted outside help in removing the massive sea animal's corpse.

Thousands of Californians remained under evacuation orders as heavy rainfall continued in parts of the state, threatening more flooding as part of a series of storms that have left at least 17 dead in recent weeks.

Thunderstorms were drenching northern California Tuesday afternoon with more rain expected Wednesday and Thursday. Across the state, more than 20 million people are under flood alerts as the risk of mudslides also spreads to the Los Angeles and San Diego areas.

"Scattered to widespread instances of flash flooding will be possible, especially near steep terrain and burn scars," the Weather Prediction Center said Tuesday afternoon.

Roughly 34,000 remained under evacuation orders statewide, California Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a Tuesday afternoon news conference.

A man skiing in the backcountry in the Mount Charleston area near Las Vegas died Monday in an avalanche, local law enforcement authorities announced Tuesday.

The skier, identified as Las Vegas resident Punan Zhou, was swept about 500 feet (152 meters) down Mummy Mountain before friends found him using a location-tracking device, said Sgt. Matt Marlow of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's search and rescue team.

Authorities on Monday initially described the man as an injured hiker.

Thanks to continued snowfall, Mammoth Mountain, CA, has reported 40 - 54 inches from this current storm with an expected snow accumulation of 22 -28 inches today.

Mammoth Mountain has surpassed last year's season snowfall total and, with 419″ of fresh snow at the summit, is now officially the snowiest ski area on Earth. 310 inches have dropped at the Main Lodge, including 13 feet since January 1. The resort also has the deepest base in the country.

Mammoth has been closed today due to the intense snowfall conditions and very dangerous travel in the area. Roads have been heavily impacted and are not plowed. The resort will focus on avalanche mitigation work today and protecting our equipment. They plan to reopen tomorrow, January 11.
