A Chinese farmer had a lucky escape after a rare Siberian tiger hurled itself against the gate of his home, smashing it off its hinges.

In video footage, the growling tiger is seen running along a road outside the man's house in a village in the north-east of China.

The attack happened in Changtai village in Heilongjiang province in north-eastern China on Monday.

The farmer walks across a courtyard full of drying maize and into the street to see what is going on, but suddenly retreats as the tiger returns.

He manages to shut the metal gate but seconds later the tiger launches itself against the barrier, bursting it open.

The farmer escaped with his life but a short time before, another villager had been attacked by the tiger while feeding his cattle.

Severe flooding has hit several areas in the southern province of Phatthalung, prompting officials to declare disaster zones across four districts, affecting 15 subdistricts, 57 villages, and 12 communities. The heavy rainfall has led to both flood and wind disaster declarations, with urgent evacuations underway to move residents to safer areas.

Kongsakul Jantrach, acting governor of Phatthalung, convened a meeting with the provincial administration, disaster prevention and mitigation office, local government organisations, and military units to address the flooding crisis effectively. The meeting focused on the rapid response needed to mitigate the impact on affected communities.

Phatthalung, being a low-lying area, naturally receives water from the neighbouring districts of Srinagarindra and Kong Ra, exacerbating the flooding situation. Currently, six subdistricts, 42 villages, and 12 communities have reported significant distress due to the inundation.

California has been hit by record levels of rainfall, which has caused small landslides and flooding in the US state.

The storm on the west coast of America arrived earlier this week, killing two people and cutting of power to hundreds of thousands, mostly in the Seattle area, before its strong winds moved through northern California.

Santa Rosa, California, saw its wettest three-day period on record with about 12.5 inches of rain falling by Friday evening, according to the National Weather Service in the Bay Area.

Flooding closed part of the Pacific Coast Highway in Mendocino County and there was no estimate for when it would reopen, according to the California Department of Transportation.

Rare "white owl" snowy owl migrates south to Inner Mongolia for winter

A rare "white owl" recently appeared in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

This larger owl, whose scientific name is Snowy Owl, recently moved south to spend the winter in the southwest of Hulunbuir City. Although it looks a little cute, it is a ferocious hunter in the Arctic. They will settle in Europe, North America, northern Asia and other regions in winter, divide and defend their territories to the death, and migrate north in spring.

The snowy owl is a national second-level protected wild animal and is listed as a vulnerable species in the "International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Endangered Species".
