Rare snowfall on the Oregon coast

When you think of the Oregon coast in winter, you probably think gray drizzle and king tides.

But the Oregon Coast Range - all the way from Astoria to as far as the Florence area - is under a winter storm warning until Wednesday at 7 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for much of northwest Oregon and parts of southwest Washington beginning Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025.National Weather Service

The weather service adds to be ready for, "Total snow accumulations between 4 and 10 inches."

The atmospheric river storm hitting Northern California brought heavy rain, flooding and mudslides to the San Francisco Bay Area on Tuesday.

In the mountains, the National Weather Service has issued two separate winter storm warnings for the west slope of the Sierra Nevada and the Tahoe basin as heavy snow is in the forecast from midday Monday to Wednesday morning.

Pacific Gas & Electric Co. reported thousands of customers were without power due to the storms.

German tourist on motorcycle killed in lone wild tusker attack in Tamil Nadu, India

A wild elephant fatally attacked a German tourist riding a two-wheeler while he was passing through the Tiger Valley hill road near Valparai, on Tuesday evening, officials said.

The onlookers rescued the tourist identified as Micheal Jurcen from the elephant and rushed him to a Waterfall Garden Hospital in Anamalai Tiger Reserve Valparai where he was administered first aid. He was referred to Pollachi Government Hospital for higher care and was shifted to Pollachi by a state-run ambulance service.

Doctors said the German national did not respond to the treatment and succumbed to the injuries later in the hospital.

Police officials identified the tourist as Michael, 77, who has been touring India.

Police said the incident occurred when the tourist was passing through a stretch of the hill road, ignoring the wild tusker's presence.

A powerful low-pressure system is unleashing record-breaking snowfall along Hokkaido's Pacific coast, with the city of Obihiro accumulating more than 1 meter of snow in just 12 hours through Tuesday.

Heavy snowfall has persisted since Monday night, with Obihiro recording 120 centimeters in the 12 hours through noon on Tuesday, the highest on record for the city. Snow depth in the city has now surpassed 120 centimeters, a level last seen in 1972, according to private weather forecaster Weathernews.

While the cold front's impact is most pronounced in the northern regions along the Sea of Japan, the cold air mass is also pushing westward, spreading snow to the Kyushu region facing the East China Sea and the Shikoku region facing the Seto Inland Sea.

In some parts of Kyushu, temperatures have dropped below minus 12 degrees Celsius, according to Weathernews. Kagoshima Prefecture is experiencing steady snowfall, with accumulations visible on grassy surfaces in the city center. Mountainous areas have seen roads turn completely white.

Madagascar is bracing for Tropical Cyclone Faida to make landfall on its northern coast on Feb. 4, even as it deals with the aftermath of another recently dissipated storm, Elvis, that reportedly killed at least five people.

Those killed during Elvis's passage were involved in "lightning events" in Vohibato district in eastern Madagascar, according to a European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) report. Two people were also injured.

Elvis formed over the Mozambique Channel, between Madagascar and the African mainland, on Jan. 28 and struck the southwestern coast of Madagascar a day later. It caused heavy rainfall and strong winds in the southern part of the country, with maximum sustained winds of 84 kilometers per hour (52 miles per hour). The cities of Toliara and Taolagnaro recorded rainfall levels of 196 and 178 millimeters (7.7 and 7 inches) respectively over the course of five days, The Guardian reported.

The cyclone dissipated over the southern Indian Ocean during the weekend.

Accumulations of up to 60cm (2 feet) in 24 hours were reported with Chamonix posting the biggest 72-hour total of 1.2 metres (4 feet). Fellow French resort Flaine posted 105cm (3.5 feet) whilst La Thuile, just over the Italian border, got 80cm (32"), and Switzerland's Crans Montana 70cm (28").

A massive rain and hail storm brought the Costa del Sol to a standstill Monday morning after an orange alert warning from AEMET, the state meteorological service.

The warning, which is ongoing until the evening, is mostly affecting Malaga capital, the Costa del Sol and Guardalhorce Valley areas. Emergency services have received hundreds of calls about flooding of ground floor homes and businesses. Luckily so far there have been no serious injuries other than shock. Most of the damage done has been to personal property and vehicles.

One woman became stuck in her car when trying to cross to the other side of an underpass below the Cercanias commuter train line in Torremolinos. She was unable to leave her car on her own, but a local person managed to get her out and to safety through the hatchback of the car.

A video capturing landslides on Santorini highlights the potential risks after a series of earthquakes in the Cyclades' sea region, sparking concerns about the possibility of a major quake.

Six tremors whose magnitude exceeded 4 were recorded between 09:36 and 11:29 on Monday, with the largest at 11:29 having a magnitude of 4.9 and an epicenter 25 kilometers south-southwest of Arkesini, Amorgos. This was followed by another quake of magnitude 4.9 at 2:17 p.m. on Monday, with an epicenter 18 km south-southwest of Arkesini, Amorgos, and 231 km southeast of Athens.
