Anarchy along Jersey Shore, Long Island in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy

Image
Hurricane Sandy is another reminder of just how incredibly fragile the thin veneer of civilization that we all take for granted on a daily basis really is.Many of the hardest hit areas along the Jersey shore and the coast of Long Island have descended into a state of anarchy.

More than 7 million people live on Long Island, and millions more live along the Jersey shore and right now they are getting a taste of what life would be like during a total economic meltdown.

At the moment, there are still approximately 4.7 million homes and businesses that do not have power. Officials say that some of those homes and businesses may not have their power restored until the weekend of November 10th and 11th. Meanwhile, it is getting very cold at night.

This weekend the low temperatures on Long Island are supposed to dip into the upper thirties.

There have been reports of people diving into dumpsters behind supermarkets in a desperate search for food, and there have been other reports of roaming gangs of criminals posing as officials from FEMA or Con Edison and then robbing families at gunpoint once they have gained entrance into their homes.

SHOCK: 72 hours after grid-down: Starvation, supply shortages, food lines, no clean water, no gas, transportation standstill

Image
A recent study noted that the majority of people have enough food in their pantries to feed their household for about three days and that seemingly stable societies are really just nine meals from anarchy.

With most of us dependent on just-in-time transportation systems to always be available, few ever consider the worst case scenario.

Libya's real revolutionaries occupy Libyan parliament

Image
Hundreds of pro-Gaddafi rebels have turned up at the Congress building
Dozens of gunmen have occupied Libya's parliament to register their anger over the formation of the new government.

The militiamen are demanding some of the ministers be removed because they have links to the late Muammar Gaddafi's regime.

At least a dozen trucks mounted with anti-aircraft guns are lining the main road to the parliament.

Libya held a peaceful election in July and finally agreed the composition of a government on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Ali Zidan gained the support of the National Congress for his choice of ministers.

His list included liberal figures and Islamists in an attempt to forge a coalition acceptable to all parties.

Hurricane Sandy death toll climbs above 110, New York hardest hit

Image
The number of lives lost and families shattered from Hurricane Sandy continued to climb Saturday, with the death toll now at more than 110.

The number of lives claimed in New York from the super storm was reduced by one to 48, after medical examiners determined two deaths initially linked to the storm were not, and another body was found during the recovery effort.

Hardest-hit parts of the state are still buried in rubble and tunnels in metropolitan New York still flooded, leaving officials to wearily expect that the number could keep climbing.

Canada - Quebec police forces have made 111 arrests in one of the largest crackdowns on organized crime and the drug trade in the province's history.

More arrests may be made as the investigation progresses, police say.

A total of 127 people were targeted in Operation Loquace. Of those people, 26 are still at large.

Sûreté du Québec officials say 10 other arrests were made without warrants during Thursday's raids.

Six people were allegedly leading the criminal activities and relying on other organizations to import and distribute large amounts of cocaine, police said.

Two of the alleged leaders, identified as Shane Maloney and Larry Amero, were apprehended in Montreal's Verdun borough and face charges of of conspiracy to traffic drugs, drug trafficking, conspiracy to import drugs, drug importation and gangsterism.

Amero is allegedly linked to the Hell's Angels in British Columbia.

Maloney was arrested in June after an off-duty Montreal police officer was beaten up in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

Canada, B.C. - Police forces across British Columbia's Lower Mainland were on high alert Friday night as transit police hunt a would-be bomber.

A bomb was spotted by a passenger on an elevated SkyTrain track in Surrey this afternoon, and later removed and exploded by an RCMP bomb squad. The confirmed bomb threat is believed to be the first ever involving SkyTrain infrastructure.

Transit police spokeswoman Anne Drennan said officers will conduct a full sweep of TransLink's complete rail network throughout the night, also checking bus loops, stations, and terminals.

"We want to make sure there is nothing else out there to cause the public and our passengers harm," Drennan said.

Transit police have asked all police forces in the different Lower Mainland jurisdictions served by SkyTrain to go on "high alert" helping to monitor for tracks for suspicious activity. Extra uniformed transit police officers are stationed throughout the TransLink system, and plain clothes transit police detectives are on the lookout for the bombing suspect, Drennan said.

New York City police say they've charged a nanny with murder in the stabbing deaths of two children last month.

Police finally could interview 50-year-old Yoselyn Ortega as she continues to recover from self-inflicted stab wounds. They charged her in her hospital bed Saturday night with two counts each of first- and second-degree murder.

Police say Ortega fatally stabbed 6-year-old Lucia Krim and her 2-year-old brother, Leo, on Oct. 25 in the children's Upper West Side apartment. She then stabbed herself.

A third sibling was with their mother when the killings happened. The mother returned home to discover her children dead and Ortega bleeding.

Ortega remains hospitalized under police guard.

Police helicopter crashes in Atlanta, 2 dead

Image
An Atlanta police helicopter flying low on a search for a missing 9-year-old child crashed near a major city intersection overnight, killing the two officers aboard, authorities said.

Police spokesman Carlos Campos confirmed the deaths but said no one was hurt on the ground in an area just blocks from a busy east-west artery, Interstate 20, and in a neighborhood populated by fast food restaurants, stores, a major pharmacy and other outlets.

The helicopter carrying the searchers went down about 10:30 pm. Saturday in the city's northwestern reaches. Photographs broadcast on local television soon after the crash showed what appeared to be flaming debris on a roadway.

Campos told The Associated Press by telephone that authorities were trying to determine what events had led up to the crash, but he said a search was under way for the missing child at the time. Although Campos did not elaborate, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution later reported that a missing child was subsequently found unharmed.
